KEITH HERNANDEZ, JOSE REYES NEARLY COME TO BLOWS ON PLANE (RR)

You know I am only teasing. I love you babies out there — always have.

Jose Reyes and Keith Hernandez had to be separated on the Mets charter plane Sunday night after a tense confrontation over Hernandez’s critical comments about the All-Star shortstop.

A team source described the situation aboard the plane as “very heated.” One player told The Post that he thought Reyes and the popular former Met - now an analyst for the club’s SNY TV network - were close to exchanging punches until others stepped in.

Reyes said yesterday he was angry at Hernandez after numerous friends and relatives told him Hernandez accused the Mets of “babying” Reyes during the broadcast of Sunday’s 3-1 win over the YankeesNew York Yankees at Shea Stadium.

“He got his point [across] and I got mine,” Reyes, when asked to describe the confrontation, told The Post before he drove in three runs in the Mets’ 11-1 victory over the Cardinals last night. “I’m not too happy with the way he’s been talking.”

According to one account, strongly denied by both Reyes and Hernandez, what set Reyes off during the flight was when Hernandez allegedly responded to Reyes’ concerns by saying: “I was just doing my job - you should do yours.”

This comes at a stupid time. Offensively, Reyes is having his best year. Nobody know it yet because his average is "only" .295, but when in a week or two it breaks .300, you'll start hearing "if the Mets can turn it around, is Reyes NLMVP?" talk. Particularly if Wright is still struggling with a 141 OPS+. ;)

I'm on Keith's side with this. What is Jose's arguement exactly... throwing his glove is not acting like a baby?

Why is Jose getting a hard time about throwing his glove? He's having a subpar defensive season so far and he got frustrated with himself for making a bad throw. So what? I'm glad he's getting angry at himself. I'm glad he cares. If he just stood there, people would be getting on him for being too nonchalant.

This is kind of a shame, they both seem like good guys, even if Hernandez chooses to act like kind of an ass here.

The reaction on this board will be completely opposite of the reaction of the general Met fan population, i.e., Hernandez is God-like; Reyes is a crybaby punk.

i think the fundamental issue is the fact that team announcers, regardless of whether or not they are former players, obnoxious gasbags, or whiny #######, need to realize they are not part of the team, they are not coaches, and in the end, their opinion does not, should not, and will never matter to any one save the unwashed massed of the casual bandwagon fan....and if jose reyes has to become a martyr to take down hernandez, so be it.....i just hope someone on the yankees steps up to take down susan waldmen and john sterling.

Reyes is a crybaby punk. He may also be a marginally talented middle infielder, but he is definitely a crybaby punk, as has been demonstrated time and time again over the past few seasons. Keith Hernandez? Probably a punk too. We'll call it a draw.

Hernandez is an entertaining broadcaster, but when he starts getting on anyone for their attitude on the field, Ron or Gary, or even Reyes for that matter, should ask Keith how many games he played blasted out of his mind on blow, or how many days he played through a four-alarm hangover. Keith's got no moral highground on anyone. I'm not saying I dislike the guy for what he's done- if anything it makes him a really interesting guy with some crazy stories- but he's gotta understand his past comes with some limits on what he can condemn people for now. Jose Reyes on his worst day brings a better attitude to the field than Hernandez did.

If Reyes just posted his career line in September, the Mets make the playoffs. I'm a believer and a fan (hell, he's the only player that gets my GF to go see the Mets with me), but that doesn't change the fact that a good September from Reyes (and an 80% SB rate) gets the Mets into October.

I'm glad Jose has numerous friends and relatives that feel it their duty to report back to him when the announcers say bad things about him. Sounds like a real solid support system. In any case, Reyes shouldn't worry about what the announcers say, no matter who they are.

Reyes is really upset at the reaction to him dropping his glove. He has been getting asked about it for a few days and doesn't understand why it is so much different than another player knocking over a cooler after a bad AB.

Reyes is being too sensitive but he is probably getting more criticism than he deserves. That comes with the territory though as he'll get more than his fair share of praise if the Mets win.

Yeah, but if Hernandez should be brought down BY a player for speaking against a player, I'm not sure how that equates with Waldman and Sterling, who would defend Jeter if he urinated on the field during the 5th inning.

And I agree they are terrible to listen to, but I don't see how it relates to this situation, that's why I was confused by what you wrote.

I missed the whole glove-hurling business. In these situations, where the offense is minor, the player usually does better to escalate and turn it into a burlesque. At the next home game I'd encourage Reyes to good-naturedly punt his glove into the stands. At Shea, the cheering would shake the upper deck.

edit: I remember a game at Shea where Wally Backman had botched a couple of early, baby plays. Late in the game he caught an easy pop-up hit right to him, there was a scattering of sarcastic applause, Backman took a deep, exaggerated bow, and the stadium erupted. Isn't there someone on the Mets who tell Jose how to have fun with the crowd?

I hope Jose and Beltran tag-team Hernandez and Cohen. I hate their constant carping. And Keith Hernandez is a major, major hypocite. He got himself exiled from a good Cardinal team because of laziness and insubordination (not to mention the coke), then played for a team of showboating hotdogs, but acts like he was ####### Lou Gehrig or somebody.

You missed the announcer during this latest Yankees-Mets series (can't remember if it was TBS or FOX) that said there was some debate on this a couple years ago, but no longer because of how poorly Reyes has played. It was truly amazing.
