I wonder if, when the league added additional umpires, there were critics who decried the end of such tricks as "cutting the bases"?

It was while with the Chicagos that Kelly became famous.


I crack up every time I see that old-fashioned usage. It's probably apocryphal, but I remember a supposed quote by Casey Stengel, when he met Yalie Ken MacKenzie for the first time. "Who won that game you pitched, the Harvards or the Yales." I can't seem to find that quote anywhere.
