Ken Giles: ‘I’m actually enjoying the game more than I did for my entire tenure in Houston’

Blue Jays closer Ken Giles hasn’t exactly turned things around since joining the Blue Jays on July 31, when the club sent embattled closer Roberto Osuna to the Astros. Giles posted a 4.99 ERA in 30 2/3 innings with the Astros, then put up a slightly less miserable 4.58 ERA in 17 2/3 innings with the Jays. Still, he’s much happier with the Jays than he was with the Astros, even after winning the World Series with them last year. He said to Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star, “I’m actually enjoying the game more than I did for my entire tenure in Houston. It’s kind of weird to say that because I won a World Series with that team. But it’s like, I just felt trapped there. I didn’t feel like myself there. Overall, I felt out of place.”

So, what do we suppose this actually means, reading between the lines?

That reads like a guy who didn't like the pressure of being on a contender. Obviously he pitched very well last year for them (until October) but that was my thought as soon as I read the headline.

So are Astros fans, Ken.

The weight of expectations.

With the Phillies, he was a 7th round draft pick who was a reliever. He compiled 1.5 years of reliever very-goodness at 23/24 years old on two bad Phillies teams.

Then the Astros traded a large package for him to be their closer. He was expected to be great, and was for one season out of 2.5.

Now he is basically a scrub bullpen arm in Toronto with zero expectations.

I'm hoping that there are many more years of these in the future, but as of now, the last Roger Angell article available at The New Yorker is about Giles from May of this year.

Reminds me of Ruben Sierra's comments after being traded from Texas to Oakland that Oakland was "too focused on winning" or something to that effect.

I think that was when Sierra left the Yankees.

Oh yeah. That incident was the Yankees. I thought it was the A's because LaRussa was definitely the source of the "village idiot" description of Sierra.
