Ken Levine: My Tribute to Tony Gwynn

M*A*S*H/Cheers/Frasier writer remembers Captain Video.

He and I shared a cab to Shea Stadium in New York one afternoon. Somewhere in the streets of Queens the cabbie lost control and the cab did a full 360 spin before coming safely to a stop. Once we caught our breath I said to Tony, “You realize that if anything had happened the headline in all the papers and on all the news shows would be ‘Tony Gwynn and passenger killed in car accident.’ My life would be reduced to ‘passenger.’ “ Tony called me ‘passenger’ for the next two weeks.

Ken has one of the best blogs around, and this is one of his finest tributes.

I vaguely remember that pic as being from an Antonioni Film. I don't remember which one so I don't get the reference.

The Passenger.

Really nice post, but it doesn't make up for the disappointment that was Bioshock Infinite.

I think its hysterical that you recognized that it was an Antonioni film but did not guess which one...

I kept thinking..

"there is a movie called "the passenger" right? Is this a still from it... wasn't Jack Nicholson in it? Hmm... was it Antonioni... cant remember. What the hell was it about..."

In the early 1970s Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett were on a jet when they spotted Jackie O. a few rows ahead.

Carol to Walter: "If we crash, I'd get third billing in the headlines!"

Walter to Carol, without missing a beat: "And she'd get second."

That used to be a Mickey Mantle quote that went the same way: "If the Yankees team plane crashes, the headline would be "Mickey Mantle, 24 others killed in plane crash".
