Keon Broxton frustrated by lack of playing time

Mets backup outfielder Keon Broxton got three at-bats during Thursday afternoon’s game against the Nationals, a welcome change for the five-year veteran if under unfortunate circumstances. Michael Conforto got the start in right field but collided with teammate Robinson Canó attempting to catch a fly ball, suffering a concussion.

Broxton replaced Conforto in right field and went 0-for-3 on the afternoon. The backup outfielder is now batting .143/.208/.163 on the season in 53 trips to the plate.

Does this mean that Operation Shutdown II is coming soon to a baseball team near you?

I was at this game. Broxton made the final out, striking out with the bases loaded. Mets fans in my vicinity were irate every time he swung, having reasonably concluded that a walk was his best chance of reaching base safely.

this should clinch his being DFA'd when Lowrie returns from IL any day now.

of course, Brodie von Moviestar just traded three minor leaguers for this stiff in January, so....

DFA'd today

Yep, a free career tip to all weak-hitting RHB defensive CFs and ML GMs out there -- no team needs two weak-hitting RHB defensive CFs.

But he might be the 3rd best hitter on the Marlins.

The Mets replaced him with Carlos Gomez, so they still have two weak-hitting RHB CFs. Not sure about the defensive part.

I am not sure he can play center field any more.

right. CarGo The Lesser is a weak-hitting RHB corner OF. I guess that counts as variety?

Broxton and d'Arnaud are two illustrations of how BVW seems to make a lot of rookie mistakes as GM. With d'Arnaud, it only cost them money (though arguably cost them Mesoraco too, and prompted the Plawecki trade), but with Broxton, they had a comparable player in Lagares (though Juan can't run like Keon), and they dealt away depth in the farm for him. It never made sense, esp with Broxton being a guy who has no track record as a quality bench guy.

I would have held onto Broxton and used the Conforto injury to give him a few starts and see if he can get his bat going. Gomez wasn't tearing it up at Syracuse, anyway.

When is Lowrie back/Frazier dfa'd?
   9. Howie Menckel Posted: May 18, 2019 at 02:33 PM (#5843398)
Lowrie should be back this week.

Scuttlebutt is Frazier deemed "too good in the clubhouse" to jettison. he's also 4 for 9 with a double, a triple, and a walk in the past few days, thus buying himself more rope.

Ah, that makes sorta sense. So Hech goes down, then? Or Smith? Can't send Davis packing with how good he's been hitting...

Is there a lesser CarGo anymore? CarGonzalez has a .596 OPS in 104 PA this season. If he doesn't start hitting he's not going to be around much longer.
   12. Howie Menckel Posted: May 18, 2019 at 06:15 PM (#5843430)
Davis is expected to play some LF so Frazier can inspire the masses from the hot corner.
Hech is the only backup SS but these are the Mets, so they'll probably demote him again.
Or Smith again.

Feel for Keon. Dude has the talent but the one issue of strike zone management Brother can hit the long ball, play great D and is an awesome teammate. Just too much swing and miss. Has to be really tough to be right there and then you are pushed out

I just don't get the thinking that says Gomez>Broxton, esp considering what they gave up to get him. Did the Mets learn anything from 45 at bats in 2019 they couldn't have known from looking at shouting reports and the numbers he posted in 250+ games he played prior to 2019?
   15. JJ1986 Posted: May 22, 2019 at 06:30 PM (#5844759)
The Mets have added another weak-hitting RH OF and can now play Rajai Davis-Juan Lagares-Carlos Gomez across the outfield.

Keon has been acquired by the Orioles, and I’m happy for him; he’ll get a chance to play regularly there.

The timing of the Nimmo injury and the Broxton dfa couldn't be worse. Gomez has looked surprisingly ok (but Gomez has always *looked good* playing), and Davis was supposed to be a break-glass-in-case-of guy. Looks like Cano is headed to the DL too, with Lowrie currently unable to continue his rehab assignment.

Last night's win was pretty delicious, same Mickey knows these last 3 games have basically saved his job, but this team is still a mess right now.

Robinson Cano is on the IL with a strained left quadriceps.

Luis Guillorme, the Mets’ last healthy 40-man position player in the minors, is up from Triple-A Syracuse.

I was hoping it was going to be Dilson Time, but I guess he's not on the 40-man.

Not the last time he was on the Mets! He was about as raw a player as I've ever seen. Of course that was 12 years ago.

Yeah I guess I meant "he physically looks like a good ballplayer"...

Damn, that's a nice bounce-back from the Marlins series. The Mets sort of had no business winning this game, but that Nats bullpen does not disappoint.
