Keri: D-backs GM Kevin Towers Talks Upton Trade

• Asked if the Diamondbacks preferred grinding, gritty players

Towers replied, “That’s accurate. That’s the way [manager Kirk Gibson] played the game. That’s how we won in 2011, and Justin was part of that club.” Towers lauded Martin Prado as having that kind of mentality, grinding out at-bats and not striking out. He added, “Justin played hard every single day,” and “he cared, he’s a competitor.” But because he had a bit of a “swagger,” and because of his general body language, people might have perceived him differently.

Is Towers trying to get fired? He's actually admitting they'll accept less talented players if they're "gritty"?

What an ass.

Chris yhoung was gritty...ran into walls...that worked oujt well

Justin hurt his thumb prett bad....played thru it..... true grit....that worked out well too.

I bet you end up with an entire roster full of grinders and tbhey all end up grinding on each other

I don't see how his admission of this changes anything. It's a readily apparent fact to anyone who looks at the transaction history since he took over as GM in Arizona.

The funny thing is that before the D'backs picked Towers as their GM, the owner gave a quote saying that the next GM will have to focus on creating a strong farm system. So they pick Towers, and he proceeds to trade most of the farm system and talent for 'Grinders'. Just weird.

The funny thing was that ownership claimed Josh Byrnes left a barren farm system according to ownership, but the amount of talent Towers has been able to find in it or trade away has been ridiculous (Goldschmidt, Parker, Collmentor, Skaggs, Eaton, Ryan Cook, Matt Davidson, Cowgill, Holmberg, Chris Owings, Pollock). Even today the DBacks top prospects are mostly Byrnes/Dipoto guys.
