Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com talked with Youkilis about his future in Boston. McDonald writes, “Since teammate Adrian Gonzalez is locked up as the club’s first baseman until 2018, and there’s a highly touted third base prospect in the organization, Will Middlebrooks, Youkilis doesn’t know what his future holds in Boston. His contract expires at the end of 2012 with a club option for 2013, and no matter if he re-signs with Boston or ends up playing for another team, Youkilis seems to be content with either scenario.”
So where would Youkilis want to go when his time with the Red Sox runs out? “If I were to go anywhere, I would want to go to Cincinnati and play in front of my parents at home,” Youkilis said. “I think it would be really cool for my dad and my mom, but especially for my dad, growing up in Cincinnati, that would be a real cool thing.”
Youkilis goes on. “If it wasn’t Boston, I would want to play in Cincinnati just to say that I did it. I grew up rooting for them. I used to be bitter towards the Reds because they didn’t draft me, but that bitterness is gone. It would be fun and it would be for my family.”

1. SouthSideRyan Posted: August 09, 2011 at 02:04 PM (#3896178)I also will not be surprised when someone in Boston media tries to shape this story into "he wants to leave" or "he doesn't like Boston" or the like.
I would bet against Will Middlebrooks ever being the regular 3B for the Boston Red Sox. There's a lot to like about Middlebrooks, but he needs to take several qualitative steps forward to be a major leaguer. His plate discipline is very poor.
During the Final Vote for the All-Star team in 2010, the Reds encouraged their fans to vote for Joey Votto, and because he is a Cincy native, Youk.
Vote Votto and Youk
I agree. Just a superficial glance at his stats makes me think of David Bell, although Middlebrooks is a lot bigger than Bell was.
I actually didn't realize he was still locked up for two more years after this, through his Age-34 season. Frankly, that's about perfect, they'll have almost certainly gotten every last drop of his peak, and probably the first 2 years of his (hopefully still valuable) decline.
