Kiszla: Rockies, unplug humidor, watch Carlos Gonzalez win Triple Crown

Obviously, Kisla was Ottavino and turned to the harder stuff.

So why not sell the humidor at a garage sale, or haul it to the junkyard in the dead of night? C’mon, nothing is going to help this sorry excuse for a Colorado pitching staff. Let visiting teams complain about four-hour tests of patience. Let Gonzalez mash.

But let the record show that CarGo is adamantly against turning back the clock to those wild-and-crazy times on Blake Street before the humidor.

” I don’t want to be part of that. I don’t even want to think about it,” Gonzalez told me. “It’s been tough enough for us to play here with the humidor. When you play longer games, your body is destroyed. I don’t think I could handle it.”

The humidor is broken anyway.

They screwed up...they should have built an indoor stadium. Weather sucks in spring and fall anyway....and they would be able to control things a little better indoors.

Cargo hits the nail on the head....the longer games are a crusher. I know they had a couple of years where they made late runs...but for the most part, that ballpark has hurt them.

Indoor baseball is more offensive to me than anything Luke Scott has ever said.

I think the real problem is the high altitude. They should do something about that. Has anyone discussed a sort of sunken field, where the playing surface is below street level? That could help if it was deep enough. Or, you know, it could just be a hard place to play baseball. It's like hating on April wind off the lake in Cleveland or July heat in Arlington: this isn't a new problem and it seems the Rockies have solved it as well as anyone, so I'm glad to see the players are just digging in and playing.

A sunken, indoor stadium, pressurized to sea level.

Problem solved.

We could call it the "Shark Tank."

The park factor just for this year so far approaches the crazy numbers of the old days. I thought perhaps with the fly ball staff the difference was that the pitchers were affected similarly to the hitters, but the hitters still seem to benefit more.

The Marlins park is right up there with Coors so far. Wasn't that supposed to be a pitchers park?

It's supposed to be impossible to hit home runs in, and it's 19th in baseball in home run factor. Its park factor so far is 2nd in hits, 11th in doubles, 4th in triples, and 1st in walks. So it seems that, so far, hitters do everything well in the new park other than hit home runs.

The park has pretty small foul territory, which means that it's possible that some of the high batting average is real and not a sample size issue. I have no idea about the high walk totals. It seems to have a decent hitters background, but nothing special. So who knows if that number will stay high or if it's just a fluke.

Gonzalez is currently at .356/6 HR, 24 RBI at home, .266/4/13 on the road. If only he had a home field advantage.

Imagine if he didn't hit in the toughest road parks in all of baseball.

He's played a total of 8 games in LA, SD and SF. He's played more road games in NL Central parks than NL West parks thus far. Of course, it's all a small sample size this early in the season.

The playing field at Coors is about 20 feet below street level, which is evident when you walk into the park.
