Klapisch: Girardi, Manny don’t mix

That’s because Girardi Skipper Dogs…

Just how much of the Yankees’ ineptitude was the fault of the over-zealous manager, who transferred his anxiety onto his players? Girardi’s postgame death stare was legend in the clubhouse; at times he wouldn’t even speak to his players, much less look at them, as he marched back to his office after a loss.

So before they start negotiating in earnest with Scott Boras, Manny’s agent, the Yankees need to consider how Ramirez would respond to Girardi’s state trooper mentality. Here’s an early theory: He won’t.

...It figures to become terrific theater in the next few weeks, but it’s Girardi who should be sweating. Either the Yankees steer clear of Ramirez and Mark Teixeira, leaving the Bombers with a third-place caliber offense.

Or else Ramirez bursts through the clubhouse doors in spring training, dreadlocks in full sway, marking the beginning of the end of Girardi’s tenure.

Either way, there won’t be any soft landings in 2009. If ever there was a win-or-else edict issued to a manager — stated or not — it’s about to cling to Girardi like a second skin.

Huh, I thought it was

Torre/Dodgers, Manny don’t mix

But then .396/.489/.743/1.232 and .520/.667/1.080/1.747, so what do I know?

I hope something goes completely crazy and Manny ends up back with the Sox. Oh, god, do I hope that happens.

I don't like Manny or the Red Sox, and I hope that he ends up back in Boston. It'll provide for years of entertainment.

You misspelled tedium, Ryan.

I just have a lower threshold of entertainment than you do.

After all, I spent the year watching the Jays "hit".

I would like to see the Blue Jays sign Manny Ramirez and then trade Lyle Overbay for Jake Peavy.

I don't think the Padres will like that at all. At least give them a player they can use, Adrian Gonzales is one of the better 1st basemen in baseball.

If you don't love the Manny Ramirez experience, you don't love baseball, or life.

Just how much of the Yankees’ ineptitude,
Seventh-best record in baseball is inept? With Wang and Posada hurt, not to mention the other injuries they suffered? Get off it.

On the surface of it, a Girardi-Ramirez pairing sounds like it's doomed. But then I'm reminded, mostly because of his passing last week, that Dock Ellis and Billy Martin got along famously with the Yankees. Ellis, a controversial, outspoken pitcher with a history of defying his managers, trying to co-exist with Martin, notorious for being especially hard on pitchers and having troubles with strong willed players? Who would have thought that would have worked?

Then there's the relationship between Martin and Rickey Henderson, which succeeded well in both Oakland and New York. Henderson had some of his best seasons playing for Billy.

Baseball does make for strange bedfellows.
