93° but a couple of hours till the Tigers’ game in Arlington - I have not yet begun to suffer :)

Michael Fulmer starts against Matt Moore; watching Moore pitch should be suffering enough.

PJ Conlon - Mets SP tonight - the first "Irish-born" player in MLB since 1945!

well, it's a little complicated. he's from Belfast, Northern Ireland - which, unlike Ireland, is part of the United Kingdom.

not a high ceiling, but kicked butt in A and AAA in 2016-17 before the Vegas air has gotten the better of him early this year.

last Irish-born player - pitcher Joe Cleary - entered in the 4th inning with the Senators trailing, 4-2

his night (and MLB career) went like this:
single
walk
single
wild pitch
walk
single
K (of pitcher Boo Ferriss)
single
walk
double
shower

lasted 0.3 IP, charged with 7 ER, 5 H, 3 BB. lifetime ERA of 189.00

beat that, Conlon!

btw, 2 Irish with 1000+ H:
Patsy Donovan 2256
Jack Doyle 1811

and 2 Irish with 100+ W:
Tony "Apollo of The Box" Mullane 284
Tommy Bond 234

Danny Farquhar has been released from the hospital after his ruptured aneurysm. He is resting at home. Always nice to have some good news.
   4. BDC Posted: May 07, 2018 at 07:40 PM (#5668146)
Very good to hear that about Farquhar, thanks Brady.
   5. Howie Menckel Posted: May 07, 2018 at 08:01 PM (#5668161)
Farquhar out for the season, fyi, but who cares

5-0 Mets in the 3rd with 3 taters

Homer Bailey the most appropriate parental choice for a name since Losing Pitcher Mulcahy

(the worst choice, of course, was "Lou Gehrig" for obvious reasons)

The Reds pitching is so, so bad
   7. JJ1986 Posted: May 07, 2018 at 08:10 PM (#5668168)
Conlon with the opposite field single.
   8. Jess Franco Posted: May 07, 2018 at 08:11 PM (#5668169)
When he hangs 'em up, Bailey should be the designated derby pitcher every all-star HR contest.

he's from Belfast, Northern Ireland - which, unlike Ireland, is part of the United Kingdom.

And the Catholics have been sh*tted off about it for over 300 years since William of Orange sent some guys over and decided it should part of the U.K. The protestant population of course is more then happy to genuflect in the presence of their English masters.

At least it has spurned some amazingly good literature and music though.

I'm a grandson of 4 Republic of Ireland natives, so I'll steer clear of that
:)

classic Irish story from the parents interviewed in the Cincy stands: Dad finds out about the callup not from Conlon but from a NY Times reporter. then Dad speaks to the kid yesterday morning - and they haven't talked to him since, preferring he focus on his routine. not the most intrusive family culture, I can confirm.

well, Mom is Scottish so add that to the mix

Nomar Mazara with a HR that must have smacked off the facing of the upper “home run porch” in RF, given how fast it ricocheted back onto the field. Be fun if balls like that remained in play ...
   12. Howie Menckel Posted: May 07, 2018 at 08:38 PM (#5668197)
the Irish Times is in on it
"Born in Belfast 12 days after the Greysteel Massacre in 1993, the son of a Catholic father and a Scottish Protestant mother who converted, he spent the first two years of his life on Rockville Street off the Falls Road. His parents, who had both spent time in America in their youth, eventually decided California’s Orange County (ironically enough) offered greater opportunities for their nascent family.

When the child subsequently demonstrated an aptitude for baseball, his father Patrick, who played soccer for the University of California, Fullerton, began learning more about the national pastime, often by playing video games with his son."

worth a click for the classic Joe Cleary stories (see Post 2)

Earlier today, I noticed in my MLB AtBat app that the scheduled starting pitcher for CIN was: D. Bailey.
Don't know if it was at the player's request, or the Reds, or just some kind intern at MLB trying to change the conversation before Homer flushes out.

(Not that he wasn't a decent pitcher at some point. Injuries happen to all players, especially pitchers. But he's pretty much dust now, regardless of contract.)

Jesus, I didn't even know Mookie Betts was Irish... damn me !

For later : Piscotty !
   16. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: May 07, 2018 at 09:37 PM (#5668233)
Gsellman is the funniest on mound ball flipper ever !

Go Mets !

Damnit !
   17. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: May 07, 2018 at 09:45 PM (#5668237)
Sounds like there are like 200 people at Great American Ballpark. So sad.
Nonetheless, Go Mets !
   18. BDC Posted: May 07, 2018 at 09:48 PM (#5668238)
5-1 Tigers in the sixth of an uninspiring game - except for the many Detroit fans here.
   19. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: May 07, 2018 at 09:50 PM (#5668241)
Seems like TODAY is kind of the lame appetizer for tomorrow's start of the Red Sucks @ Yankees Series.

Go Yankees ! But, Go Mets !
   20. BDC Posted: May 07, 2018 at 10:07 PM (#5668249)
One mess of a half-inning later, and it’s tied 5-5.

Rockville Street off the Falls Road.

I know where this is and it's a long, long, long way from...

California’s Orange County

Ironically enough where I grew up in the late 60's and 70's. Along way from "the troubles" I can assure you.
   22. Bote Man Posted: May 07, 2018 at 11:46 PM (#5668299)
Trea Turner out here reminding the Padres why they let him go. No, wait...
   23. Bote Man Posted: May 08, 2018 at 12:18 AM (#5668309)
Matt Adams is known to hit home runs off RHP.

Matt Adams also hits home runs off LHP. 8-2 in the 7th in the festering hellhole of San Diego.
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 08, 2018 at 12:22 AM (#5668311)
I didn't even know Mookie Betts was Irish...

He's marrying into the British Royal Family (via some tenuous, not exactly confirmed, distant relationship with Meghan Markle), so he probably won't even bother to come back to the USA after next season's Red Sox - Yankees series in London.
   25. Bote Man Posted: May 08, 2018 at 12:45 AM (#5668316)
So...you're saying all Betts are off??
