Korea Times: Jorge Cantu under fire for racist remarks

Cantu…lower than his helmet has ever been.

Doosan Bears’ infielder Jorge Cantu has been under fire for his racist remarks on Twitter.

The first baseman Monday re-tweeted an edited photo of several Korean high school students with the face of a male student cropped and placed on the face of every student in the picture, insinuating all Koreans look alike.

The photo was titled “Desafio,” which is Portuguese for “challenge,” and is followed by five challenges which obviously aim at making fun of how Koreans look.

They are: “Which student is sleeping?” “Find twin brothers in the photo. ” “Find twin sisters. ” “How many girls are there in the photo?” “Which one is a teacher?”

The 32-year-old former Major League player immediately removed the posting since it started to draw strong criticism on the Internet. Later, he said he had no intention of making racist comments through the post.

But Internet users strongly criticized his careless action, and it was disappointing news for his fans, who have praised his impressive performance and contributions to the team.

Man, he's going to hear it in the clubhouse from Mr. Go.

Man, what an idiot.

You're already playing in Korea, dude. How many bridges can you afford to burn?

For every athlete who makes positive use of Twitter it seems that there are ten who get themselves in trouble and probably a hundred for him it's a zero sum game.

Really?

Shut your mouth, round eye.

Isn't Cantu the one that stole Derek Jeter's glove in the Yankees clubhouse?

No? Oh, they all look alike to me.

I think the Koreans should be grateful that asian vaginas didn't make his top five list.

Cantu has always reminded me of this guy.

Wow, Cantu is only 32? Didn't realize he was so young when he was a regular with the Rays--I thought he was a career minor leaguer who got a shot at the show in his mid/late-20s.

Jorge Cantu comes from a very rich family and I remember hearing something about how he approached his baseball career in a half-assed way. That said, he had a wrist injury after his first year with the Marlins, which usually doesn't have a good effect on power hitting.

He said he was trying to delete it. How could he delete a tweet he never made?

To all korean fans…there was a misunderstanding, i accidentaly gave a RT to a picture that i was trying to delete, my apologies.

think you all know how easy going and happy i am to be here and it shows on and off the field ????

From the bottom of my heart, my sincere apologies of this terrible mistake, im so against racism n discrimination, i lived it myself before.

My family and i, we love it here and been feeling the warmth from the doosan bears organization and everybody in this great country ???? TNK U.

There were some comparisons to Robinson Cano when both first came up.

The road not taken, eh?

To be fair, my wife, who is korean (though born in LA), claims to have trouble distinguishing the genders of korean entertainers who appear on tv performing in singing groups and acting in soaps.

I looked up Cantu's debut season with Tampa Bay (2004), because I also thought the same thing as #10.

Also on that team:
Jose Bautista
Johnny Gomes
Tino Martinez
Fred McGriff
Rey Sanchez
B.J. Upton
Carl Crawford

That's also the year of the infamous Kazmir/Zambrano deal, and the first year the Devil Rays didn't finish last in the AL East.

Cantu later tweeted "I am willing to show #Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever".

Midre Cummings

This is the guy who defines "replacement player" for me. 1229 career PA and 0.1 WAR spread over 13 seasons. He was acquired through waiver claims twice, signed to seven 1-year free agent deals, and traded for a guy who put up a 245/285/305 career line in rookie ball and low-A. If it was the late 1990s and you needed a non-embarrassing corner outfielder then Midre Cummings was your man.

I didn't post that last tweet. I thought the gay mafia PC patrol might throw a hissy fit if they saw that.

The tweet didn't originate with him, he just passed it along. Inadvertently, he says. Now.
