The most famous alternate-name case might be Barry Bonds, as "Joe Young" (an homage to 49ers quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young) in the MLB 2K series.

What was Michael's alias in 90's for video games. Also anyone remember Kevin Butler's alias?

Hey, where's Tommy?

The MLBPA should be the bigger man here. It should cowboy up, and let these five into the games.

Life isn't fair.

It costs 60 bones to pick up a new video game these days. How much more money could the household names in MLB make if they negotiated licensing on their own?

they are forever denied membership in the Major League Baseball Players Association,

This is one situation where I think the MLBPA should let it go already.
   5. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: January 31, 2010 at 06:20 PM (#3451113)
I imagine part of the reason for the MLBPA's harsh stance is to discourage players from opting out and going on their own.
   6. Boileryard Posted: January 31, 2010 at 06:29 PM (#3451118)
The policy also prevents top prospects and other real minor leaguers from appearing in video games until they've made it to the majors in real life. Apparently Sierra nearly lost their MLBPA licence after including real minor leaguers in FPS: Baseball '96.

Beats having a game where everyone's fake except for Griffey. Even if that game was and still is awesome.

Yeah, if my memory is correct U. Josh could rake in Ken Griffey Presents.

I suspect it also had something to do with another hulking misunderstood behemoth...

In the only one I remember, NBA Jam, they just left him out.

QB Bills and QB Eagles were my personal favorites

I distinctly recall him showing up as "Roster Guard" in whatever series of games I had back then.

It was a surprise to Michael, too.

I've been waiting for an opportunity to trash MLB 2K9, and here we are. Within five minutes of play time, Phil Rizzuto was called safe at third in a game at the Polo Grounds because his body was halfway underground. Outfielders randomly drop or miss 15% of all fly balls. Rick Sutcliffe is on the NL legends team! Rick Sutcliffe! I had to go to his BBRef page, just to make sure that Sutcliffe didn't have some sort of phantom great career that I wasn't aware of.

Just from the headline, I thought this was about Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but it turns out The Replacements had a song on Rock Band 2. So you can play as Paul Westerberg, but not Kevin Millar. Funny how life turns out.

I still can't wrap my head around the existence of Lego Iggy Pop.

There hasn't been a good MLB game since EA lost its rights.

There hasn't been a good NFL game since EA hoarded the rights either.

I'd say SCEA's MLB: The Show on the PS3 is pretty good, although there is still plenty of room for improvement. They're definitely trying to create a realistic baseball experience, both on the field and in the front office.

I loved the MVP series, but the two MLB Power Pros games on the Wii were great. In some ways (roster management, the lack of the amazing Stadium-Creating franchise mode) they're not as good as the MVP series, but you can still color me impressed by them. It's a shame they're not translating them into English anymore.

This thread has nothing to do with J.D. Salinger.

MLB The Show is a great game, though not as arcadey as MVP, so obviously not as accessible to people who aren't good at things.

Also, the Wii sucks.

The Show 09 was fantastic aside from everybody being a Gold Glover (my friends and I would put guys like Manny and Papi at SS just to test it out - sure enough, they were making every play) and some aggravating moments in Road to the Show mode.

"Hey! Leadoff guy! You're not getting enough RBIs!"

"Hey! Cleanup DH guy! Work on your bunting!"

roster management

No game has done this well at all in a long time, and since it's all I'm particularly interested in when it comes to baseball games, I stand by my statement.
   26. Good cripple hitter Posted: January 31, 2010 at 10:42 PM (#3451229)
I was thinking about this last night: MLB 2K9 lets you option players to and from the minor leagues at will (Power Pros prevents you from calling a guy up for something like 15 days post-demotion), so there's nothing stopping you from running what's effectively a 30 man roster involving complicated platoons and completely burning out your mid/long relievers and stashing them in AAA for a while. It wouldn't really be worth the effort involved, but you could totally Larussa-fy your roster and have someone designated as a LH pinch hitter who is only on the roster if a LHP is starting against your team, then swap him out for an extra ROOGY or LOOGY if that's necessary.

As a fan of MVP baseball and the NFL2K series, I've been wallowing in bitterness for awhile now.

I always preferred NFL Gameday to Madden and haven't spent any significant time playing a football game since.

I buy the 2K baseball game every year to play online with a friend. The last 2 years it was so bad we maybe played 3 games. A lot of the settings aren't customizable if you're playing online, and the defaults are so screwed up it's unplayable. I play the Show on my PSP, and now that I have a PS3, I'll be giving it a spin on the console, and really happy not to give 2K any more money. By the time they make a perfect baseball game for a console, we'll have teleportation and a Bucs/Royals World Series. Rosters are consistently terrible, player ratings are a mess, even the best games are fraught with glitches. I'm waiting for a game to bring back the MVP feature of being able to move all around the batter's box and angle the hitter toward or away from the pitcher.

Madden is so consistently terrible and yet I buy and play it every year.
