Kotsay denies being a bust in DH duties, says ‘committee’ plan helped Sox

From Baseball-Reference:

Jim Thome sponsor(s) this page.

Highly underrated, Mark Kotsay became the best defensive designated hitter in American League history in 2010.”

But Kotsay instead is focusing on what the Sox’ DH-by-committee helped accomplish. And he unapologetically thinks critics are missing the big picture when they call him a key reason for the failure of that DH strategy.

‘‘Anytime you have an unsuccessful season, the finger gets pointed in every direction that it can be,’’ Kotsay said. ‘‘A failure? I think they’re generalizing it by strictly just putting the number together.’‘

The number is his .108 April batting average, which swayed opinions against him early.

‘‘If you look at the whole year from a Mark Kotsay standpoint, it’s been criticism from the get-go,’’ the lefty hitter said. ‘‘I didn’t get off to a good start, I got buried, I slowly got myself out of that hole when the team was having success in the winning portion of the season. But even in that turnaround, there was always talk that we needed a left-handed bat.’‘

‘‘Hey, you know what? It’s been the whole season. I think I was able to carry myself in a professional manner and realize, ‘Yeah, my success as a whole, if I evaluate my whole year, it’s not nearly where I wanted it to end.’ But I think I battled, I think I fought the whole season.’‘

I know professional athletes have to think this way, because denial(/self-belief) is the such a huge part of what they do. But for a DH who--not even counting April--has had two months with under OPS under .550 and just one over .850, that's a particularly amusing statement.

Will Kotsay win a gold glove? If not, then Palmeiro retains the title of best defensive DH.

So basically he tried his best and battled. It's not his fault his team choose to put a 4th outfielder in the DH spot as opposed to someone who can actually put runs on the board. Twins are winning the division by enough of a margin that one move isn't going to change things, but the fans will have to wonder all winter what would have happened if Jim Thome was on the Sox and not playing for their rival.

You'd need to have Kim Jong-Il/Baghdad Bob levels of denial to think a 238/306/376 line is anything other than putrid as a DH.

He should just say "I didn't get the job done this year."

Teixeira will probably get the gold glove in the AL, right?

GG predictions (not necessarily who I'd give the award to) - AL
C - Mauer
1B - Teixeira
2B - Cano
SS - Elvis Andrus
3B - Evan Longoria
OF - Ichiro!, Josh Hamilton, and Adam Jones
P - Mark Buerhle

I can't blame Kotsay. That is strictly on Ozzie. He could have had Thome back but passed. The Yankees did this also between Nick Johnson's injury and Berkman's arrival and it wasn't pretty.

In fairness, it wasn't unreasonable to expect Johnson to play well when healthy (there's the possibly unreasonable expectation), while no reasonable person should have expected Kotsay to hit adequately for a DH.

I would like to take this opportunity to note how good a player Mark Kotsay was in his prime, when he was very good on both sides of the ball. Sadly, he had the misfortune of spending all of it in severe pitcher's parks (FLA, SDG, OAK), which combined with the well-rounded skill set, lack of a single big year, and itinerant resume means that he'll probably quickly be forgotten. But this guy was a really, really good player from about 24-29.

Mark Kotsay talking about himself in the third person? Who's next. Yorvit Torrealba?

Doesn't that quote go beyond the typical third person usage? I think Mark Kotsay has just invented a whole 'nother person, which seems oddly appropriate for a DH who shouldn't be.

You're right...I remembered his "big year" for the A's but he was a very solid player for a while. I didn't fully appreciate that. Then again, with a wife like that, it's hard to feel sorry for the guy.

I don't think Kotsay was so deluded as to expect to put up typical DH numbers. And that wasn't his job. His job, or at least how it was defined coming into camp, was 4th OF, backup 1B, part-time DH. The Sox were going to have a magical mix/match of Pierre, Rios, Quentin, Jones, Kotsay, Konerko through 5 spots in the lineup. Nobody was expecting Kotsay to hit like Thome.

The problem of course is that 238/306/376 would be pretty bad at backup MI.

If Jim Thome plays for the Yankees, I'm just going to quit watching baseball. They have a magical tendency to acquire my favorite players. It's not just that they get big names, either -- Bobby Abreu. A star, yes, but they could have at various times have other, bigger stars. Mike Mussina. Teixeira. The only thing that's kept my sanity hanging by a thread were that they never had Pedro, Nomar, or Thome. And if I have anything to do with it -- you'd better bet I do! -- they never will.

Voxter outbids Yankees and signs Thome to personal services contract; then has him spend next three years polishing his (Voxter's) yacht, organizing his CD collection and just hanging out.

Have we had a good Rickey thread lately?

Rickey thinks Rickey would be a good coach for the A's.

I was about to mention the same thing. It is sobering to look at Mark Kotsay as washed up 1b/DH with a bum back because I remember the FL/SD Kotsay and that guy was a beast, a great flycatcher with a killer arm. It is amazing how quick a guy can go from being one of the best defensive CFs to being a 1b/DH.

Kotsay was also one of the most dominant college players of the 90s as a CF and closer who led Fullerton to a title in 95.
