The power is real, unfortunately, so are the contact issues.

I was at the game last night, and was impressed. The double was roped, and the single was a nice piece of hitting, going the opposite way, and hitting a line drive into right field. But the home run - geez, that just had a different sound, and you knew the nano-second it left the bat that the ball was gone. Small sample size, I know. But for a guy playing his third major league game, he certainly looked like he knew what he was doing.

Clearly there are things going on in scouting world that I just don't understand. I mean, kudos to Lewis for making the most of the start of his major league career, but why did a 23 yo putting up a 263/342/398 line in AA (with no speed) get a call-up? I gather from his team's batting lines that Arkansas is a pitcher's park, but that line still doesn't scream "we need this guy in the big leagues".

Because he was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft and the Mariners are doing anything they can to help the light come on for him?

that just had a different sound

Careful, they said the same thing about Jason Heyward (in a good way!)

Oof, kid has had a tough time prior to this. Ranked #29, 34, 70 coming into 2017; he dropped #67, 70, NR for 2018; and wasn't ranked by any of the three coming into this year ... and as noted, hadn't done anything particularly special this year.

Anyway, clearly he can hit the fastball, time to throw him some of the funny stuff.

1) Every power hitter is hurt by Arkansas home field, but Lewis lost about 400 points of ops. He slugged over .500 on the road.

2) Most importantly, Lewis has to go on the 40-man this offseason, because a first round pick with legit power and solid defense isn’t going to go undrafted in rule 5. If this streak ends—Lewis has been streaky this year—he’ll probably spend half a year at AAA next year, figuring out how to reduce those pesky K’s.
