L.A. Times: Brandon Wood released by Dominican winter team (RR)

Brandon Wood, the Angels’ top prospect and a candidate to start in their infield next season, has been dismissed from his winter club because of poor performance.

Wood hit .167 for Estrellas in the Dominican winter league, with one home run and 16 strikeouts in 48 at-bats. The club sent him home after 13 games.

“You’ve got to perform pretty much right off the plane,” Angels minor league director Abe Flores said.

General Manager Tony Reagins said the dismissal would not extinguish Wood’s chances of winning a roster spot in spring training.

“We put weight on the winter-ball season, but we’ll monitor how he is in spring training,” Reagins said. “He’ll get an opportunity to fight for a job, whether it be at shortstop or at third base.”

In my experience following winter leagues, a "small sample size" is usually no excuse. The local owners can be pretty impatient.

In sort of related news, Andruw Jones will be playing for the Aguilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican league starting in December in an attempt to revive his career. I wouldn't be surprised if the result were the same as Wood's.

In a small sample size, Fernando Martinez is hitting extremely well in the Dominican Winter League, 1000+ OPS in 60+ PAs.

Also, Dillon Gee has gotten off to a great start in the winter leagues as well. I think he's the next young starter in the pipeline (or trade bait).

I read this as 1000 OPS+.

Fernando doing well in the DWL means he's a lock to start the season in AAA in 2009. He'll almost certainly make his major league debut in 2009 and I'd say there's a 50/50 chance he's playing everyday by the end of the season.

Dillon Gee is a personal favorite of mine. His minor league numbers are very good so far (216.1 IP, 2.79 ERA, 170/33 k/bb ratio, 1.04 WHIP). He was outstanding in his AA stint last season and he's probably the closest to being ready of Met pitching prospects. He doesn't have the greatest stuff but all he has done to this point is pitch well.

I'll grant you I pay no attention to the DWL ... but I'd think a team cutting an actual major-leaguer has to be incredibly rare.

Wood is still really young. His minor league numbers, even in recent seasons, are quite good. Pedroia didn't do well in the majors until his age-23 season and he just won the MVP. Wood still has time to figure things out and be a useful player.

People are giving up on Wood because he was so established in the minors as a standout prospect so many years ago. He has plenty of time to develop and anyone piling on now will be posting their crow recipes after his 2010 AL MVP.

I have to say that Dillon Gee is winning me over. He could be a solid middle of the rotation starter for the Mets for the next few years.

how is Dillon Gee's stuff, what kind of pitches does he throw? His numbers look pretty impressive.

I sat next to a scout for Ian Kennedy's start last week in the Puerto Rican Winter League and he topped out at 91. His ERA is now at 3.55 after 3 starts.

The coolest thing in the game though, two time All-Star pitcher José Rosado started at 1B and is currently hitting .375. He was 2-3 with a walk by the time I left, with the out being caught at the warning track in CF. He made a Buckner-like error at 1B though. I hope he's the next Ankiel.

Mets fans, Nick Evans is hitting .071.

Interesting, I didn't know Kennedy was pitching here (PR) this winter; I'll have to check him out sometime.

His stuff in that clip looks pretty good but the general consensus is that he has averagish stuff. He's probably comparable to Mulvey.
