L.A. Times: Dodgers pound Giants in record-setting fashion

The Dodgers’ home opener was one for the history books.

Orlando Hudson became the first Dodgers player to hit for the cycle in nearly four decades Monday—and the only Dodgers batter to accomplish the unusual feat at Dodger Stadium—as the Dodgers pounded the San Francisco Giants, 11-1, in their 48th home opener at Chavez Ravine.

Hudson had a single, double and home run against his former teammate Randy Johnson and then tripled against Giants reliever Brandon Medders in the sixth inning to complete the cycle in front of 57,099, itself a record single-day attendance figure at Dodger Stadium.

The second baseman was the first Dodger to hit for the cycle since Wes Parker did it against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium on May 7, 1970, in a 10-inning game.

The last time a Dodger hit for the cycle in a nine-inning game was June 25, 1949, when the late Gil Hodges did it against the Pirates in the old Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

Kids.

Nobody expected Orlando Hudson to be hitting so well with his recovering wrist. Hell, the Dodgers thought he wouldn't be able to play until May.

I said I wouldn't go to Mets fan extreme - but I spent a month praising him, and even threw in freebies. Because let's face it, Hudson's veteran studitude combined with his defense and switch-hitting goodness will help the Dodgers win the division. For instance, unlike Lopez, Hudson would have stepped on second base yesterday, rather than lollygagging his way to the tying run scoring. Without Hudson, the Dbacks are lollygagging on defense. They're lollygagging on the basepaths. They're lollygagging at the plate. Do you know what that makes them, Levski?

And the only previous cycle at Dodgers Stadium?

Jim Fregosi, of course.

I'm astonished nobody has done it since 1970.

Parker's in '70 was on the road; Fregosi's was '64, I believe.

Its kinda odd to realize that the Angels played at Dodgers Stadium for its home games for a while.

Well, Dodger Stadium is and has been a very poor triples park, and triples are the "rate-limiting-step" for cycles.

Don't have time to look it up now, but I think a recent renovation (4, 5 years ago) of the field-level seats changed the PF for triples
