L.A. Times: Manny Ramirez falls behind in All-Star voting

Ramirez trails Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun, Philadelphia’s Raul Ibanez, the Chicago Cubs’ Alfonso Soriano and the New York Mets’ Carlos Beltran in the voting. Ramirez is nearly 135,000 votes behind Soriano in the race for the third spot.

Ramirez’s 635,530 votes are the most for any Dodgers player. Orlando Hudson is second in the balloting at second base, but he trails leader Chase Utley of the Phillies by more than 625,000 votes.

Ramirez’s suspension is scheduled to end July 3, and if he were voted onto the NL team for the July 14 All-Star Game in St. Louis, baseball’s collective-bargaining agreement gives Selig little power to prevent him from playing. That would be a public-relations nightmare for Selig and baseball, who would see one of their jewel events overtaken by discussion of performance-enhancing drugs.

Cardinals’ first baseman Albert Pujols leads all NL vote-getters with 1.240 million. San Diego’s Adrian Gonzalez, who leads the majors with 20 homers, has just 220,080 votes and is fifth in the balloting at first base.

The Mets’ David Wright leads at third base—the Dodgers’ Casey Blake is not in the top five—Florida’s Hanley Ramirez is tops at shortstop and the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina leads at catcher, where Russell Martin ranks fifth.

It would be incredibly funny if Manny was elected to the All-Star game. Would it end all the articles about steroid outrage? Please?

Shades of Rory Fitzpatrick...

I don't think it would be funny or not funny, just a what it is type of thing.

I'm more hoping to stuff the ballot box for Cardinals (and St Louis players--Buehrle, Ryan Howard)

The biggest ballot stuffers are the Brewers fans. Jason Kendall is 2nd among catchers. 2nd!

Good luck on your Buehrle campaign, cfb, though I'm not holding out much hope for you.

I can't vote for him of course, but hopefully he makes it on his own merit. According to Al today, he's never pitched as a major leaguer in St Louis.

I'm with you there. He's my favorite non-Red Sox player in the big leagues.

I can't wait for Manny to make it, or not make it. Either way, my "Disgraceful!" message is poised and ready to submit.

And Justin Upton still can't crack the top 15 among NL outfielders. Hopefully he'll be a manager's choice.

"The biggest ballot stuffers are the Brewers fans. Jason Kendall is 2nd among catchers. 2nd!"

And yet people are convinced that the best way to make fun of the all-star balloting system is to vote in Manny. Just vote for Kendall instead, and see if the NL manager is willing to pull a starter before he gets an AB.

We need to do a massive votestuffing effort for the worst player on the all-star ballot.

Who's got the lowest OPS+? Let's all vote him in.

Lastings Milledge.

The voting process is already too far along to create a horrible candidate worse than Jason Kendall. He's ahead of both McCann and Martin, and trailing only Yadier Molina.

Vote Kendall!

Also, Bill Hall is 2nd among 3rd baseman.

Bill Hall is just a good candidate for this.

I do remember when Neyer or somebody tried to organize a mass Expos election as a protest against relocation. A bunch of the guys in my dorm did it, and started sporting old skool Expos hats, too, which was a bit surreal in SoCal.

Adrian Gonzalez ? who's that? never heard of him

He should make it. No one else on the Sox is worthy.

JI

JIM THOME is still OPSing .900. Granted in the Cell that's an OPS+ of about 125 but, he wouldn't disgrace the event or anything.

a mass Expos election as a protest against relocation

That was against contraction, not relocation, in 2002. One was supposed to vote for all the Twins and all the Expos. I didn't remember that Neyer had started it; I learned about it through Primer.

A.J. wouldn't be a god awful choice either. He's not deserving, but only because the AL has crazy production from the catcher position.

I'm down with this... Milledge?

I'll also vote for Manny if it yields an end to steroids outrage columns.
