L.A. Times: Shaikin: The two sides of Manny being Manny (RR)

For the first time in six years, David Ortiz is not hitting ahead of Ramirez. How does Ortiz like it?

“I got, like, 17 walks on the last road trip,” Ortiz said. “What do you think?”

Beep-Beep…Softcore Neyerian Tracer Alert! It was 11. (Dang, Shaikin all over…Tracer)

In Ramirez, the Red Sox traded the player with the most home runs in postseason history. Perhaps his absence will doom them in October.

“Absolutely not,” Varitek said. “It’s still going to come down to one thing—how well we pitch.”

October is not here yet, but it might not come at all for the Dodgers, and for Ramirez.

The Red Sox were 11-13 with him in July, and the Dodgers were 11-16 with him before Saturday. The Red Sox were 17-8 without him.

“There,” a Red Sox official said, “is your story.”

Because it would be impossible to say "We are glad to see Manny doing well with his new team (.419/.500/.743 OPS+ 217) and wish him the best. We did what was right for our club and are comfortable going forward with Jason (.283/.375/.516 OPS+ 130)." I mean, why be classy when you can be an intellectually dishonest #########, what fun would that be?

the RedSox are a smart, sabr-oriented team; they also have message discipline comparable to the Republican party.....

The Red Sox basically said that they were trading Manny for his off-field distractions. They never said that he couldn't hit anymore. It's perfectly consistent of them to now say that they are doing fine (even better) without him.

Tek's comment is more self interest than anything. 'Hey, how we pitch is really important, and don't forget, I'm a lousy hitter but I call a super-duper great game!'

And how's that haircut coming along for Manny? This is strike 255 in the 'Joe Torre is easy going but he'll enforce rules when he has too' meme. Remember, he'd never be able to have Clemens's special arrangement on the Yankees until they really needed Clemens.

Manny sucked for a week after his haircut, but fortunately it's grown back so he's now 8 for 9 with 4 walks in the last 3 games.

Manny with the Sox: .299/.398/.529, 138 OPS+
Bay with the Sox: .327/.370/.533, 131 OPS+ with better defense and he's played every single game since the trade.

Manny's happy on the Dodgers. That's great. On the Sox he might've been more disruptive than a grumpy Sean Penn. What's the story here again?
