WILL I RECOGNIZE ANY OF THE SEATTLE MARINERS WHEN I SEE THEM TONIGHT??

Actually I'm not that bad. I see the Mariners pretty often, and I even remember guys like Ryon Healy who are not exactly household names. The starting pitcher tonight, Wade LeBlanc, let's say I draw a blank on him, haha. Come to find that he has been around forever (of course) with teams like the Padres and Marlins, and last year was a not-very-good reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates. This year LeBlanc is 6-2 with a 3.95 ERA as a starter for Seattle. You could go nuts trying to prognosticate in baseball.

Texas counters with Martin Perez. I do not have a good feeling about that move.

I kinda like when the Cubs play in an AL park and get the DH. They've got the spare bats for it.

97° at a deserted Ballpark - I realize I get here way early, but this place is vacant. Important game for Seattle, though, and a chance for Texas to play spoiler - something they could not pull off against Oakland 2 weeks ago ...

HOW IS MIKE TROUT FEELING TODAY??

Angels @Angels
Today, the Angels released the following medical update on centerfielder Mike Trout:
Mike Trout continues to experience soreness in his right wrist. He received a cortisone injection this morning and remains day to day.

We are in the bottom of the first and McLaughlin is already revving up old man McCarver "here is what I find missing in today's game is with a runner on second that a young player needs to get a hit or at the least move the runner over, I don't think that is being taught that much any more, good teams do it. "

Cardinal broadcasts have gotten unbearable to watch/listen since Matheny was fired, now all the announcers feel that they can bag on quality tactics, and promote bad strategies. I think they are trying to get the fans to support a Mike Scioscia type of manager instead of a stat friendly manager. #fakesportsanalysysis.

Well they are due! Or is that a gambler's fallacy? Or is that offset by the fact they are good team and should win at least 55% of their games anyway?

HOW IS MIKE TROUT FEELING TODAY??

He needs to get well or his rightful ownership of the AL MVP award may end up going to a slightly lesser, but still really fun player like Ramirez or Betts.

Ed Kranepool with a nice ovation during the ceremonial first pitch. The Mets are trying to raise awareness to the fact that Kranepool, 73, is in need of a kidney transplant.

They are encouraging anyone with a lead to reach out to kidney4kranepool@gmail.com, or call 631-444-6944.

in 1970, Kranepool (against his very loud objections) was sent down to Tidewater.

He was in his 9th major league season

With leadoff Dee Gordon on first, Jean Segura hit a high pop fly to 1B. First baseman Profar let it drop and threw Gordon out at second. Nice play to erase the faster runner.

Then Segura stole second anyway. Oh well :)

Just spoke with umpire Angel Hernandez at Sox Park. Angel said he looked at video of last pitch to Rizzo and that it was off plate by three inches, should've been ball four. "Rizzo was right... I'm not perfect."

Baby steps.

Fun facts!

When was something resembling the current option-year system installed? I know 40 man rosters and 24/25 man active rosters were around going way back, but the various rules governing those rosters have evolved a lot.

Sooner or later there will come a time when pitchers no longer throw Javy anything that isn’t a slider low and away.

Turns out, the sharp objects where inside me all along.

Now with jagged metal O's!!!

When was something resembling the current option-year system installed?

I think they've been around since the dawn of the modern farm system (which I think is 1960)** with official and structured connections to ML teams. (Maybe longer.) But of course if you spend the whole year on the ML roster, then no option was used. Kranepool would have had options left -- most long-serving MLers have options left***, Giambi still had at least one in that year of the massive Yanks slump, Kris Bryant still has all 3 options I think. That said, there is some language now in the CBA around years of service time and whether an option can be exercised without the player's consent which I think kicks in before free agency and so Kranepool would not be optionable under today's rules I don't believe.

Anyway, it seems to me that I've been hearing about options since 1970 when I first started paying real attention to baseball.

** Minor-league baseball had been huge ... there were obvious drops in response to the early great depression and WW2 but around 1947-48, there were over 400 recognized minors teams. The industry completely collapsed in the 50s (suburbanization, TV, westward expansion ... but there had to be other factors at work) to the point there were fewer than 100 teams left. I think it was 1960 when MLB agreed to support at least 5(?) minors teams per ML team. Once the minors aren't at all independent, you have to put some sort of options rule in place to keep teams from running 40-man MLB rosters. But it might pre-date that given a significant number of minors teams were either owned by a ML team or had an exclusive agreement.

*** and even if you're a faded vet who latches on at AAA in hopes of getting called up, that's usually on a minor-league contract, you're not on the 40-man so they still haven't used up any options you have left.

When I checked their roster, I was really hoping that Chasen Bradford is the brother of Chad Bradford. (Obsessing on "Cha" names seems like something a 20th century parent would do.) But if he is, b-r doesn't know about it yet.

Anyway, Nelson Cruz. Next time they're in town, you might see Cano. If you're lucky, maybe you'll catch a start by King Felix -- and unfortunately I mean that as in it would be good for the Rangers. And not that I'd recognize him if I bumped into him on the street, but Cameron Maybin seems to have been traded there.

ground ball, but bader was running, so no DP.

I kind of rolled my eyes at such suggestions around the all-star break, but the dude has been absolutely carrying the team offensively lately, doing Javy things in the field and on the bases and he really should be one of the leading contenders at this point. He's only 4th in BBREF WAR in the NL, but he's in a virtual tie for the oWAR lead (with Matt Carpenter) and his relatively pedestrian dWAR (0.8) is truly suspect. I don't know if he can keep it up, and it would be rare for a guy with a .330 OBA win and actually deserve the MVP, but with the other leading contenders being Carpenter and Arenado, you almost have to think he's the favorite right now.

Javy for MVP isn't a little premature, is it?

Early how? These narratives take time to take root. Also, why not? He might be the favorite among the current playoff teams (arrenado and carpenter, perhaps scherzer, lead the non-playoff contingent).

Arenado is having a very similar season: He is right with Carpenter and Baez in oWAR, but dWAR doesn't like his D this year. A normal Arenado defensive season (which, to my eyes, he appears to be having) would have him leading the NL in total WAR.

Mariners score a run. Doesn’t really matter, but I wonder if it was earned. Segura reached on the error by Beltre but was then caught stealing. Only afterward did the rally begin. So the error was immaterial. But I guess it’s still an UER because the E prolonged the inning.
   76. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 06, 2018 at 11:58 PM (#5722105)
Online box score has all runs earned, which seems correct. If the the player who reached on the error was caught stealing, he didn't contribute to the subsequent run scored.
