Lady A, John Legend to Sing Anthem at World Series

Johnny Legend!!...It’s about freakin’ time they pegged somebody ultra-cool!

Country, R&B and pop sounds will take the field at the 2010 World Series.

Major League Baseball announced Tuesday that soul singer John Legend will perform the national anthem on Wednesday at Game 1 of the series between the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers.

Country trio Lady Antebellum is set to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Thursday at Game 2. Games 1 and 2 will take place in San Francisco.

On Saturday at Game 3 in Arlington, Texas, pop singer and former “American Idol” champion Kelly Clarkson will sing the anthem. Texas is her home state.

The Feds in San Francisco were hoping that Greg Anderson would sing, but I guess that just isn't going to happen.

May I suggest ZZ Top for Game Four?

Can I get Paul Simon for one game in Texas? Please? Please?

(Baseball connections are obvious. Tenuous Texas connection: His wife is Edie Brickell (born in Dallas).)

Why is a "country trio" singing the anthem for a game in _San Francisco_?

That was my reaction. WTF?

In a year in which Jerry Brown is likely to become governor again, was it too much to ask to have Jello Biafra sing the anthem Game 1?

Game 1: Jello Biafra
Game 2: Tony Bennett
Game 3: Charlie Pride
Game 4: Old 97s
Game 5: Brave Combo
Game 6: Pavement
Game 7: Camper Van Beethoven

I'll bet they would do an awesome job.

They couldn't top a woman with a city on her head so they went in the opposite direction.

Game 4: Old 97s

The other day, Rhett Miller tweeted: "Somebody better take my temperature, I think I have Rangers fever." So it sounds like he's up for it.

I'm guessing MLB has taken over the scheduling of these things from the teams. (btw, great suggestion in The Chronicle today: Have Ferlinghetti come out and recite the "Star-Spangled Banner")

I don't like the announcements of the singers/artists. I think it should always be a surprise.

I still consider Marsalis' plaintive 1986 version to be the best I've ever heard. I'm remembering it from the World Series, but I'm having a hard time finding documentation, so I'm hoping I haven't displaced the memory.

I thought it was Elton John. He'll sing in SF were his fans are(hint, hint).

Oh come on, they couldn't get Third Eye Blind for Game 2?!

I'm sure the members of the trio are lovely people, but isn't using the name "Lady Antebellum" a bit too retrograde? It's not like calling yourselves the Nathan Bedford Forrest Singers, but it's uncomfortably close.

You are presuming quite a lot about the vocabulary of country music fans.

I'm with #3. Well, half-way. I know who Lady Antebellum is/are.

Yeah, this is way too subtle for me, too. Just what is this supposed to mean?!?

@21

Clearly it's a reference to SFs "Little Britain"

No Country Joe and the Fish?

I don't know if Joe McDonald is available, but Barry "The Fish" Melton is. He just retired last year as the Yolo County Public Defender. He used to live a half mile from me in Davis. I interviewed him once over the phone, but I've never met The Fish in person.

Get me Chris Isaak and the reanimated corpse of Buddy Holly.

Isaak himself is a bit of a corpse lately, musically:
* Christmas (2004)
* Best of Chris Isaak (2006)
* Live in Australia (2008)
* Mr. Lucky (2009)
* Live at the Fillmore (2010)
Anyone hear Mr. Lucky? Made it to #42 in Belgium.

When the Astros made the World Series, did they get Bushwick Bill to perform the anthem?
   35. Still Waiting on Pork Chops (John R.) Posted: October 27, 2010 at 04:16 PM (#3676846)
Butthole Surfers are from San Antonio. Living here now, this city doesn't really get behind the Rangers. Loyalties appear to be divided between the Rangers, Astros, and Dodgers.

during the astros WS they didn't have anyone who was an actual, you know, houstonian

like, say beyonce. or chamillionaire. or paul wall. or even ZZ top.

i think they had some country guy - natcherilly - but i never heard of him. and i forget who else. i should go back in my blog archives and look it up but i am too lazy. and too depressed, remembering it was only 5 years ago...
