LAT - Do not adjust your Internet: Mike Marshall and Tony Phillips fight

(Mike) Marshall, the former Dodgers outfielder now managing the Chico Outlaws of the independent North American Baseball League, was suspended three games for fighting Monday with Tony Phillips.

Yep, that Tony Phillips, the one who played in the major leagues for 18 seasons. And is still playing for the independent Yuma Scorpions—managed by Jose Canseco.

Don’t worry if it feels a tad surreal. It should.

Whoa! Tony Phillips is still playing baseball! Awesome! He was one of my favorite players. Very high energy. I remember he also one of the worst spitting habits up at bat.

The best part of the video (no Emmy for you, Justin.TV) is easily the umpires... watch the right side of the screen as the home plate umpire strolls to the pitcher's mound and convinces his colleague to join him. You can tell they're both thinking, "I don't get paid anywhere near enough to get involved in this ####\"

Tony Phillips also whips Mike Marshall in WAR, 48 to 10.

Let's see what Jose Canseco's twitter has to say about this:

Ignorant haters comment on the fight last night .what do you think I did

I pulled my team off the field fearing another fight would break out emotions were out of control

Everyone in chico come out and watch the game tomorrow should be awesome

Big fight at ballpark

It takes 2 men to make a brother

Roadtrip nutrition tip if you have to eat fast eat wendys'

I'm going to brng hollywood to Yuma and have some LA pals coach for a day .Who should be 1st Gary Busey, Scott BAio, or Christopher Atkins ?

A broken heart is knd of like a broken bat you can use it again but it will never be the same

How can u put a restraining order on someone u havnt seen in 4 months and lives in another state

Would love to meet a nice holesome midwest girl here in chicago. We play tomorrow night at 7 pm in zion if anyone is out there for me

OK, so only the first four tweets related to the fight. I got carried away.

Yeah, that'll happen. Amazing he had so much patience at the plate.

It's nice to see Jose Canseco supporting gay couples when it comes to adopting children, but I question his rigidity when it comes to family planning.

Holy cow - I had no idea Phillips had joined them. He's 52 and hitting .327/.431/.469 in 16 games, with error free play at third.

Unrelated: Eri Yoshida got her first US pro win yesterday (with Maui) ... whose next opponent (the much discussed Lake County club) failed to show up in Maui for their series that began tonight. Presumably, that club is now dead.

Ha! Yeah I guess that might also explain the incessant spitting and weird nervous tics as well.

Does anyone else kinda think that Jose Canseco would fit right in on the Diamondbacks roster? I dunno; completely random thought I had.

Canseco watching the ball go out and Phillips looking toward the Dodgers' celebration, seemingly angrily, are two of my favorite parts of the Kirk Gibson home run. Marshall scored the last run before the HR, but in the "Oh, he was there too?" way that Mike Marshall always had.

Dunno about first, but I would pay good money to see Busey coach third.

Aren't we all just looking for a nice holesome girl?

It warms my heart that some dude has probably walked, fresh off of smoking a bowl, into a wendy's next to a strip mall in some out-of-the-way western town and been greeted by the twitching visage of Jose Canseco.

Maybe it's just because I love Tony Phillips, but doesn't this look kind of like a Zimmer/Pedro situation? Marshall rushes Phillips and Tony just drops him (admittedly a tad more violently than Pedro did, but to be fair these two guys are the same age). I don't get the hint of assault charges on Phillips.

As an aside.
Phillips, the Canseco twins, Willy Aybar...not to mention David Cross!
There's an interesting book just begging to be written about that team.

Jose pitched a six-inning complete game this year. He has an 8.46 ERA in 22 innings.

Yuma used a DH (Joey Gathright) in Canseco's CG.

I wondered the same thing (and I don't love TP, FWIW). While Phillips was obviously jawing and moving closer, it's pretty clear that Marshall was the one who made the rush. I'm not a lawyer, but I have to wonder if "I got my ass kicked in a fight I started" is a terribly effective argument for assault.

Former big leaguers Tony Phillips and Mike Marshall fight as Jose Canseco manages

When I saw that headline at hbt I thought it was a celebrity boxing match.

Wow. How are the ... well, not mighty, but still ... fallen. Gathright was the first player from the local AA franchise to be called up to the bigs; it wasn't that long ago.

Was it?

(Checking: 2004.)

Me neither. I'm guessing Marshall's recollection of the incident is a tad biased and doesn't really agree with the tape.

IANACL, but I think Phillips would have a reasonable claim to self defense. The basic question is whether Phillips used a level of force that was reasonably necessary to protect himself from bodily harm that might have resulted from Marshall's onslaught. Given that Marshall made a mad rush for Phillips, I'd think such a defense would fly -- even if Phillips is the one who started the jawing. (In that case Phillips can argue that even though he is the one who started yapping, Marshall responded with a greater and unforeseeable level of force.)

The basic test is whether a reasonable person in a similar circumstance as Phillips would respond with a level of force similar to the level Phillips used to respond -- taking into account things like the size, strength, and age of the parties.

The lesson is don't threaten someone who can probably kick your ass (and who is willing to) with physical violence.

IANAL either, but i did learn something recently. i once asked my trainer when he had last got in a fight, and he told me it had been years ago. but he was pretty sheepish about it. some guy started some sh!t with him, and he put the guy in the hospital, and ended up paying out about 7K because he was found guilty of 'excessive self defense' or something like that. i don't know if that was a fine or if he was made to pay the guy's hospital tab ... so maybe that's what marshall is thinking about.

For real. It's hard to tell, but my guess is Marshall meant to get up in Phillip's face and maybe chest bump him, not expecting that Phillips would take that as an invitation to fight. If you angrily rush up to someone like that though, you better be prepared.

#21, Yeah, well, every case is fact sensitive. Maybe the guy was Niles Crane and your trainer beat the crap out of him.

No comment on the fight, but Tony Phillips has 17 more career WAR than Jim Rice.
