(LAT) Manny Ramirez suspended 50 games.

Just Manny being Manny?

Wanting to give the young kids a chance to produce on the Dodgers?  Get A-Rod off the back pages? Or a condemnation of the Red Sox world series victories?

Who will think of the children?

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.

Red Sox fans who gloated over the Yankees' tainted championships are feeling pretty stupid now.

Still, this is a shame. And I don't think it detracts from 2004 or 2007 at all.

ESPN is reporting it's a medication for a 'personal medical issue'

Citing a source familiar with the matter, The Times reported Ramirez is expected to say the positive test results were a result of medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue.

I'm sure this will go on for weeks.

Aren't amphetamines in a different category? I though the first suspension for them was shorter than 50 games.

EDIT: At least back in 2006, a second positive test for greenies resulted in only a 25 game suspension.

EDIT: Also, if it was ADHD, he could get a waiver for theraputic use.

Are the test results ever released? Can they be at the request of the player? I'm highly skeptical, but if it were amps for a diagnosed disorder, that would earn a lot more sympathy than if it were steroids for PEDs. I'd think MLB and Manny would have an interest in that news getting out even if it is, technically, a violation of the rules.

   50. salvomania Posted: May 07, 2009 at 04:19 PM (#3168912)
I don't think there's a good excuse for failing a test, even if it was something he took "for a personal medical issue."

When you have a job that pays you tens of millions dollars a year, and that tests for certain substances, with the consequence of a negative test being a suspension and loss of income, then you had better be damn sure you know what's going into your body.

And if you don't know---or if you do know, but don't think it will trigger a "fail" for some reason---then you only have yourself to blame (not some doctor, or unclear guidelines, or a poppy seed bun).

Are the test results ever released? Can they be at the request of the player?

They are supposed to be kept secret. Not the result, but what caused the result. Now, most players are going to come out and try and clear their name. And, we also know how things that are supposed to be secret are leaked, so I'm sure we'll find out in the next day or two what caused all this.

When you have a job that pays you tens of millions dollars a year, and that tests for certain substances, with the consequence of a negative test being a suspension and loss of income, then you had better be damn sure you know what's going into your body.

I'm not going to gloat over this, considering my team's championship was devilered in large part by Troy Glaus. But if Red Sox fans were gloating, they were always stupid to do so considering the obvious but not caught roiders on their teams, and the fact that many, many players were roiding on all teams that were not in the least obvious about it.

Okay, let him explain, and then air the evidence and see if he's just bullshltting or not. It's not as if he's likely to skip the country in the meantime.

But if by some outside chance he's telling the truth, then you have to question the safeguards involved in interpreting these test results.
   63. AROM Posted: May 07, 2009 at 04:22 PM (#3168932)
Manny was set up. Juan Pierre spiked his protein shake in a bid for playing time.

Another sure HOF candidate bites the dust.

Clemens, Bonds, Manny, Palmeiro, A-Rod, Sheffield, and McGwire will have to start their own hall, which will be more star-studded than the players of this era who actually get to Cooperstown.

I'm just speculating here, but if Manny does have adult ADHD, and was taking amps, then I personally feel that's a legit excuse. Seems like if it was something along those lines, MLB wouldn't suspend him for something like that.

Isn't there a hotline players can call to doublecheck any medication? My impression is that if they get the OK for a medication, and it later turns out that the medication caused a "positive," then they can say that they were cleared to take the stuff beforehand...

Manny's official statement:

"Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me," Ramirez said. "Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.

"I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to [Dodgers owner Frank] McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, [manager Joe] Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans.
