Lauber: MOYER HOSPITALIZED (UPDATED)

On Thanksgiving eve, we have received word, via text message, from the Phillies that Jamie Moyer has been readmitted to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with what the team is terming “recurring symptoms from his groin surgery” in October.

For now, those are the only details we have, but we’re hoping to hear from team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti later tonight. Until then, there’s no way to know when Moyer checked in, what treatment he’s receiving or to gauge the seriousness of the situation.

(UPDATED, 7:55 p.m.): According to Ciccotti, Moyer “is very comfortable. He’s walking. He’s up. He’s doing his normal routine.” But he has been experiencing lingering pain from his Oct. 2 abdominal surgery, prompting the Phillies to bring him here to be evaluated by Dr. Bill Meyers, a nationally renowned specialist who performed the original surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital. Moyer saw Meyers yesterday, spent last night at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and will be undergoing tests, including an MRI exam. Ciccotti doesn’t believe the pain is related to the blood infection that hospitalized Moyer last month, although he hasn’t ruled it out. Ciccotti said Moyer will remain in the hospital for several days, maybe through the weekend. After that, he will return to his Bradenton, Fla., home to continue his rehabilitation.

“He’s completely comfortable and fine,” Ciccotti said. “We’re just taking appropriate precautions and also wanting to do what we can to make sure he’s on track for spring training.”

Thanks to Dr. Gillespiechart.

"Confound you! Merely affix the leeches, you mountebank!" Moyer complained.

the photo in TFA shows Mr. Moyer wearing stirrup hose... I didn't think there was anyone left wearing stirrup hose.

good wishes on Mr. Moyer.

Those are compression stockings to prevent post-op blood clots.

Oh ####, a surgery that wasn't completed successfully?

And if #50 wants to hang it up, leaving as a 46-year-old with his last 28 victories on back-to-back pennant winners is not a bad farewell.

I have a bad feeling about this.

But then again I also thought Hagrid would die and McCain would win the election, so hopefully I'm wrong.

As one of the few remaining major leaguers who are older than I am, I wish Moyer a speedy recovery

Wait a minute, you're older than you are and a major leaguer? Wow.

Oh the old gray moyer, he ain't what he used to be,
ain't what he used to be, ain't what he used to be

Yeah, he has got three years on me myself, so he needs to hang on for us graying beards.

Hell, when I was in college, I could have been changing Moyer's diapers. The last one to retire who was older than me was Pete Rose.

I don't want to make you guys feel old (ok maybe a little), but the first player to be YOUNGER than me is Rick Porcello...

I don't want to make you guys feel old (ok maybe a little), but the first player to be YOUNGER than me is Rick Porcello...

On the first day of my freshman year in college, I got the bad news in the form of Ed Kirkpatrick. A quick rush of desperation was already setting in, seeing a guy nearly three months younger than me batting against John Wyatt when I hadn't yet even made the freshman team.

Edgar Gonzalez, with Jose Reyes and Miguel Cabrera following soon after.

I had to check this out for myself, but it appears that the immortal Ed Correa is the answer for me. With that said, the guy that really opened my eyes was Dwight Gooden, since he's only 7 months older than me and was pitching great on my favorite team as a rookie back in 1984.
   17. Flynn Posted: November 27, 2009 at 12:21 PM (#3397532)
The first ballplayer younger than me is a damned good one: Felix the King in 2005. He's almost six months younger than me as well.

"Ow, my groin..."
   19. kthejoker Posted: November 30, 2009 at 09:09 PM (#3399371)
For me, another Tigers pitcher: Jeremy Bonderman. I don't recall him ever looking younger than me.

I thought it was Chad Gaudin for me, but it was actually Edgar Gonzalez.

Lance Carter? Boo...

For the purposes of this exercise, I'm using Kevin Millwood (9 days younger than me) and Richie Sexson (12 days younger than me).

I think that it was Ramon Martinez (Pedro's brother) for me.
   23. Infinite Yost (Voxter) Posted: November 30, 2009 at 09:48 PM (#3399398)
Mark Teixiera. Two days younger than me. At least, he's the closest to me in age. There might have been dudes who were younger before that, but he's the first one I noticed.
   24. esseff Posted: November 30, 2009 at 09:54 PM (#3399404)
Seems like we've done this before. First player in the majors younger than me was Terry Forster on April 11, 1971. Last player older than me was Charlie Hough on July 26, 1994.
   25. Benji Gil Gamesh is not being paid to be that guy Posted: November 30, 2009 at 09:57 PM (#3399406)
Ha! I think the first to be younger than me was El Guapo.

Damn, Moyer was also the oldest guy in the AL...in 2005.
   26. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: November 30, 2009 at 10:05 PM (#3399413)
We have done this before, but I keep forgetting the first player younger than me. It was a Padres-system outfielder named Brian Greer, who didn't play much above AA but got into one NL game in 1977 at the age of 18. I can't say as I noticed at the time.

The first star players younger than me were Tim Raines, Fernando Valenzuela – the first one I paid much attention to, honestly, was Fernando, because he was so famous so young.

The last player older than me was Julio Franco. But hell, Julio Franco is older than John McCain.

Armando Benitez and I were born on the same date.
   28. billyshears Posted: November 30, 2009 at 10:13 PM (#3399422)
At first it seemed that I was stuck with Gene Kingsdale, but after some further digging I am relived to report that it's actually Andruw Jones.
   29. Randy Jones Posted: November 30, 2009 at 10:22 PM (#3399428)
First player younger than me was Rick Ankiel.
   30. philphan Posted: November 30, 2009 at 10:56 PM (#3399459)
First player younger than me was David Clyde (though for years I thought it was Robin Yount); last player to be younger than me (a much more upsetting situation) was Dennis Martinez.
   31. Van Lingle Mungo Jerry Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:14 PM (#3399491)
But then again I also thought Hagrid would die and McCain would win the election, so hopefully I'm wrong.

Well, thanks for ruining both of those for me. Try writing "SPOILER" next time. Sheesh!

Also: Dwight Gooden for me. Yet another thing for which I've never forgiven him.
   32. Lassus Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:15 PM (#3399493)
I don't know specifically which player was the first younger than me, but the first player that made me say "that just is not right" when confronted with the fact that they were younger than me was Jim Thome.
   33. Steve Treder Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:23 PM (#3399503)
Brian Greer, appearing on 9/13/77. It was at that moment that I felt my first flickers of doubt about not making the majors ...
   34. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:29 PM (#3399517)
So, Steve, you are almost the same age I am, which leads me to wonder aloud at two things:

(a) how you can have total recall of baseball games that were played in my infancy, down to batter mannerisms and pitching repertoires :-D

(b) that you were actually paying attention when Brian Greer came to bat in 1977. I guess it's possible: it was a Padres-Dodgers game, and you were presumably an NL West fan at the time (I was living in Michigan and catching the occasional Tiger game on the radio, and Brian Greer could have made a significantly greater splash without impinging on my consciousness).
   35. dlf Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:33 PM (#3399522)
Junior Griffey ... and he's two years younger. Madison Bumgarner was the first born after I graduated college. I think Eric Wedge was the first manager younger than me, but haven't double-checked. I can't believe there are several whippersnappers at GM. Those are supposed to be the old greybeards with the pot bellies and cigars.

I think the complete list of players active in '09 who are older than me is: Moyer, Unit, Wakefield, Vizquel, Smoltz, Brocail (how did he last this long?), and Hoffman.
   36. phredbird Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:33 PM (#3399523)
first player younger than me was mark lemongello. i think the first good player younger than me is robin yount. he's the first HOFer younger than me.
   37. phredbird Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:35 PM (#3399528)
I don't know specifically which player was the first younger than me

it's easy. bb-ref does players by birthdate, then arranges within birthdate by year. just find your birthdate and then click to the next day until you find someone in your year of birth.

First player younger than me - Alex Rodriguez.
   39. phredbird Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:39 PM (#3399535)
actually this brings up a little problem. yount debuted well before lemongello. so i guess i need to look at when a player debuted to answer the question 'first player younger than me'...
   40. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: November 30, 2009 at 11:42 PM (#3399539)
several whippersnappers at GM

I am easily old enough to be Jon Daniels' father. And to have told him not to trade for Adam Eaton.
