I assumed they're at the game.
On top of that, they could always take a page out of anime and veer from the source material. Full Metal Alchemist was completed as a TV show before half the books were done and they came up with a good plot. Then they were able to milk it by coming up with a second anime based upon the tv show, in which the first half of the episodes were almost exactly the same as the first series.

The timing gets weird. The first two-thirds or so of 5 take place at the same time as 4. They're going to need more material by the time 4 is over or some characters will disappear.

Not at all. The next book is going to be covered in two seasons and I'm sure they can extend that as necessary for books 4-5.
There have been multiple stories regarding Martin having every intention to get the next book out fast enough not to screw with the new-found fandom of the series. I mean, it's not a given he'll SUCCEED, but he has flat-out acknowledged he's going to be working with that in mind.
That is the way I looked at him, but he's probably better than that. His defense has improved(although I think he's playing deeper now to compensate for the fact that he always takes his first step in the wrong direction) his consistency is nearly Adam Dunn freakish.

You expect improvement or for the league to catch up to him, but he just goes out and does the same thing.

That is what I was about to say sorta. McCarver goes when he is right he is tough to hit.
You want to know what's tough to hit, a pitcher who is throwing a ball and has no ####### clue where it's going like Lincecum.
