I still like McCarver. And Buck still sounds tired to me.

McCarver is better than Sutcliffe.
   703. cardsfanboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:14 PM (#4270420)
No, please tell me he didn't just say that Scrabble is warming up.

Dear Mike Matheny---Scrabble = Valverde, don't use him.

You set a very low bar.

there are no sexy cardinals. carpenter is as sexy as a block of stone. he is not ugly but he's just uck. carlos beltran, much as i hate the SOB, is a FINE lookin man, but not sexy.

and marco scutaro leads off this inning with a single, too.

cards came back from being down 6-0 the last game - maybe this is their comeuppance, youneverknow. WHY the **** didn't matheny pull lynn as soon as it was obvious he had completely lost it?
   706. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:15 PM (#4270424)
That Chevy commercial is definitely one I don't like.

I remember the radio jingle from my youthful days and it was catchy the first time around. Now it just seems forced. I absolutely do not see Major League baseball players singing that in the dugout or warming up on the mound. No friggin way.
   707. cardsfanboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:15 PM (#4270425)

us short people have to drink also. :)

Missed it, got a second bingo with the addition of Lincecum to the game.

WHY the **** didn't matheny pull lynn as soon as it was obvious he had completely lost it?

Too busy trying to find a way to capture the "Sexiest" title as well as "Handsomest."

What happened to this zone? That was a strike 30 minutes ago.
   710. cardsfanboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:18 PM (#4270429)
Now I need either a giants error or a walk to Kozma or Holliday for the last bingo.

Scrabble is coming onto the field.

matheny is not sexy OR handsome. he's just an ordinary whatever middle aged guy wouldn't notice him if you walked by him
   720. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:20 PM (#4270442)
Fiat commercial gets a thumbs up from Jose as well. The tune is catchy.
   721. esseff Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:21 PM (#4270446)
So they're going to burn their one lefty in the 5th? Guess that's one way to not be tempted to use him in the late innings.
   722. Guts Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:21 PM (#4270447)
Scrabble is coming onto the field.

Seriously, why is this dude on the roster. If you want someone to throw lefty, let Jay pitch. The results will be no worse.
   723. base ball chick Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:22 PM (#4270448)
hunter pence is not now and was not ever sexy at all. he most certainly has a really beautiful body, though. he looks like a statue. really.

but he's just like, a guy. sexy is something else.
   724. cardsfanboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:22 PM (#4270449)
I'm with the Giants fans on that call. I don't think he "offered"

[x] Jon Miller notes that Rzepczynski's nickname is "Scrabble".

I'm reminded by my Scrabble buddy that proper names are not allowed. He does NOT bend the rules, either. Still, that name's gotta be worth at least 30 points, more on a bonus square.

edit: Per Kate Spanos it's worth 90 points, but only because of a 50 point bonus for making a word longer than 7 letters, plus it needs qty 2 "Z" tiles and the game only has 1.
   729. esseff Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:25 PM (#4270457)
Well, they could leave Zeppo in to face the lefties Greg White and Crawford, I suppose, except that he'd have to bat, cuz he's up third this inning.
   730. TomH Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:25 PM (#4270458)
Carlos Beltran, now with 36 runs scored in his 28th postseason game.
   731. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:26 PM (#4270459)
I must say, I do believe Tim Lincecum has found his calling as a mid-long-reliever. He's the next Dennis Eckersley.
   732. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:27 PM (#4270460)
With the lead I think I leave Scrabble in there.

Seriously, why is this dude on the roster. If you want someone to throw lefty, let Jay pitch. The results will be no worse.

I really wish the Cardinals would find a legitimate great lefty reliever. Every year we say we are going to get one and end up not actually bothering to even shop around for one.

We did find one last year, and now he sucks.

Could they have won the World Series last year without him? He was pretty darn good last October.

Of course this team definition of a good lefty, was their never ending quest(which eventually did end) for Brian Fuentes, who was never any good, even when he was "good".

In a 10 run game, a 2 run lead with 4 innings for the other team does not feel remotely safe.
   740. KJOK Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:33 PM (#4270474)
So with Lincecum pitching means Zito is definitely starting a game, correct? Cards are looking pretty good then if they can hold on here.

bunyon

he's slowed down since he left the astros, not sure why. he had really gotten his baserunning/basestealing to a higher level. now, he's lost a lot of that and is swinging at crap again.

cmon
the cards have had some decent leftys - no billy wags, true, but not all crap neither. am surprised that rzep is their only one. tells you that TLR really IS gone

and the cards should leave trever rosenthal in for more than 1 inning, if he can do it
   743. Guts Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:35 PM (#4270477)
In a 10 run game, a 2 run lead with 4 innings for the other team does not feel remotely safe.

Agreed. Cards are still 80% to win this game, but after watching all this insane postseason baseball I am very nervous.

Timmeh is out so Theriot can hit? Uh, ok.
   744. cardsfanboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:35 PM (#4270478)
The Riot is batting. He'll get a hit and be thrown out on the bases.
   745. KJOK Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:36 PM (#4270481)
and ironically Theriot, the man who almost single-handedly sabotaged the Cardinals Game 6 World Series comeback last year.

   748. Guts Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:36 PM (#4270485)
Trev, buddy, pretty much the first rule of being in the major leagues is don't walk the Riot. That's just embarrassing.

Maybe he just wanted to see some baserunning antics firsthand.

   750. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:38 PM (#4270487)
McCarver, the tool. Timmy pitching tonight is exactly WHY Zito will start Thurs.
   751. cardsfanboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:40 PM (#4270489)
It's bad enough that I'm tense because of a close game, but then Fox compounds it with the dumbest camera choices and close ups of the pitchers eyelashes. And of course let's focus on the runner on first during the pitch. Mind you I like that angle, if they would have panned back a little to see the second baseman also, but during the pitch, there is a reason everyone uses the same camera angle.

Buck had more of clue when he talked about both Bochy and Timmy liking Timmy pitching in relief. Them pinch hitting for Timmy said to me that they want him available to do the same thing tomorrow.

Hopefully Matheny is presented with the option of whether or not to pitch Rosenthal another inning or to pinch hit for him this inning.
   756. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:43 PM (#4270495)
CFB, why are you worrying, it doesn't matter where fielders are located or if runners are kept close to the bag, all you need to do is focus on the titanic battle between pitcher & hitter. Leave it to Fox to dumb down baseball to football like dimensions.
   757. cardsfanboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:44 PM (#4270497)
Still need a Giants error or Holliday or Kozma walk for the third bingo...two of those are possible this inning.

i really wonder why fox does all those horrid camera angles - i mean, does their marketing tell them it gets more eyeballs?

A true lack of understanding and presenting the game. They think the game is boring and need to personalize the game so close ups make you relate to the players since you can see their faces (you don't see them doing this nearly as frequently in football) and of course baseball is only about the pitcher vs batter and that there is no such thing as defense, so you don't need to show the whole field. Again the opposite of football. In football they show the entire line during the play so you realize it's a team game, meanwhile baseball shows only the pitcher, batter and catcher(which is the best angle for the pitch as it's being delivered) and they carry that philosophy on to the field, close up of the fielders so that you can see them field the ball, but you miss the entire showing of their range, you miss seeing the runner move down the line in time with the play, you are treated to a snapshot of the game, and it's because the producers think the game is boring, and don't seem to realize that their camera decisions are making it so.
   777. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2012 at 10:51 PM (#4270521)
Didn't one year SF or somebody get a brass marching band out there to play GBA? Because that was cool, and sort of fit in with the early days of baseball where teams bands playing in the stands and such.

I approve of Mujica's socks.

Was folding laundry and only half paying attention, maybe. If so I approve of Rosenthals socks as well.

Nice work there.

So after Rosenthal and Mujica, I feel ok about this game. Not great. But ok.

The main reason I don't like it is that it was done in response to the World Trade Center attack, as part of the police state overreaction. A true patriot protests such things.

I'm on record as saying the best recording of an American patriotic song is Ray Charles singing "America the Beautiful".

I'm going to go with Hendrix's version of the SSB on 7/4/70.

Nasty, snarling, pugnacious version (better than Woodstock) with a blistering segue into Straight Ahead.

Either that or his version from Berkeley the same year.

I get that Matheny would like to have Rosenthal and Mujica available again for the sixth and seventh tomorrow, but on some level it seems to me that if you've got a guy throwing well you might oughta let him go a little longer.

On a side note, this series should once and for all end the confusion in my mind over Venezuelan pitchers Edward Mujica and Jose Mijares.

So you'd rather sort your sock drawer than watch Mujica pitch with knee-high socks in the playoffs???
