Hopefully we get to see Matt Cain be MATT CAIN at least once this postseason.
So now I'm all aboard the Tigers train. Woo woo!
Hey, he's tried everything else.
So a quasi-legitimate question. The WS is going to start next Wednesday, even if the LCS are done by Friday. Does the NBA and NHL do that? I don't follow as closely, but it seems to me they start later rounds of the playoffs organically based on when the previous rounds end. Sometimes you get one team sitting for a week, but never both. Is that right, or do I misremember?
Just another way TV pushes as all around, I guess. Are the ratings usually so much higher for MLB to justify this? Or does it not happen enough to matter? Heck, it may not happen here, we could go until Monday on the NLCS.
I don't know what the NBA/NHL do; I suspect that the playoff games are on a fixed schedule due to scheduling issues but I couldn't swear to it. Ever since MLB went to multiple post-season rounds there has been the possibility that a team sweeping a round might have to sit idle for several days while another round is completed. For a baseball team this is not necessarily a bad thing because it would give you the chance to set your rotation as you want it. I would think that for sports that involve more running/skating, having additional days off than your opponent would be to your advantage, that is, having more time to rest.
I think I've watched more of the playoffs and been the most into the playoffs this year that at anytime since I was a kid. They've been great drama.
The NBA makes you wait. All the games are already scheduled for TV. IIRC, the Spurs swept the Clippers, then got to rest for a week, waiting for the Thunder, which allowed them to rest their old man knees.
Oops, I'm in the wrong year. Carry on.
This has been today's walrus update.
SO, as a manager, if the game does start, do you burn Lohse/Cain for the inning they'll get in before the game is called, and then not have them available for when they resume play tomorrow?
Well, that would be idiotic. (Therefore, the rumors are probably true.)
After talking with the powers that be in St. Louis, I’m confident we’re going to play. But it’s also possible the ALCS will be over by then
Eduardo Nunez made a diving stop and homered off Justin Verlander. Furtado's programming can't overcome that.

Word has it that a biblical drenching is imminent.
Keep watching the skies.
In St Louis about 10-20 miles from the stadium, overcast but not biblical.
Edit:went outside and I can see the sun through the overcast.
That is just a feint.... setting up the lack of control for the imminent Holliday beaning.
No-one knows yet, he ran out a double play ball and nothing really looked wrong, then he got taken out of the game.
And good call at 2b
They may have sent the future Hall of Famer out to West County to huff and puff and blow the rain away. He may be the Oct hero of the day yet
Blind squirrel.
(Inning-Ending DP [X])
Or not.
Is right twice a day, right?
Anyway, it's a pretty big deal for those who like to watch wicked sliders.
Bummer. Beltran gets pulled before I can call him a Future Hall of Famer half a dozen times.
That was not an ideal throw by Cain.
I was going to say that he was never very good in the first place, but I had forgotten how well he hit last year (.314/.370/.502!). I don't know quite how teams will value him, but I think it would be fair to give him something like 4/60 with free agent prices so inflated these days.
And wow. Matt Carpenter, clutch god? If he hits another one with his team trailing in the ninth, he'll be the next Raul Ibañez.
He took himself out, because he saw something in Carpenter.
That would be nuts, he's not the type of guy you sign to more than a two year contract. Maybe with a third team option if you give him anything approaching 8mil+ a year.
Forget it, he's on a roll.
Yes, indeed. What exactly are they putting in the water over there in Saint Louis??? First, Descalso, then Kozma Kramer, now The Other Carpenter. Are they getting secret transfusions from Raul Ibanez???
Don't the Cardinals have any no-ass minor league scrubs who actually stink in the post-season???
Apparently, he read your comment.
He's unquestionably going to get much more than $6M per year. And especially if Nick Swisher actually gets a deal on the order of 7/100, Pence is going to look like good value. 4/60 may be a little high, but remember that the deal that gets made is going to represent the craziest offer, not the consensus (Jayson Werth, anyone?).
That was DEFINITELY fed to him. "Sample" has too many syllables in it for that crew.
I edited that to 8mil after realizing that this years numbers were split.... he's going to be 30 years old, and is roughly a 115 ops+ corner outfielder, that makes him an average player I guess, but it seems that is also the type of player that is fairly easy to replace.
Whoever goes farther in the post season between the Yankees and Cardinals gets that slight distinction.
That's decreased. Fangraphs always looks at win expectancy from the perspective of the home team.
"Team of the Century" 12 years into the 20th: the Chicago Cubs
Well played, sir. Well played. The Cubs were also the Team of the 19th Century, it should be noted.
Errr...I read it upside down. It DECREASED the Giants chances by 7.3%. I will give a little credit to McCarver for calling it a bad decision to bunt.
Edit - coke to Eric J
Party pooper.
Looks like your higher being of choice just muted the announcers, too.
He walked 6 batters total over his last 8 regular-season starts in 2012.
With Cain and Lohse pitching...game might be over before any rain delay.
Since the '08 Series, all postseason games are required to be played to completion; it'll be suspended and resumed if necessary.
Incidentally, I thought that Selig making this call in '08 was exactly right, and one of the best decisions he's made.
I read that at first as "ground screw."
Looking a little light on the bingo card at the moment.
I screwed up and selected a Giants card and can't get rid of it, so I'm not playing today. :(
Me too. Wishful thinking.
