LCS OMNICHATTER DAY 5: Game 3 NLCS and Game 4 ALCS

THERE’S ONLY ONE OCTOBER! Well, this year at least. There will be another next year, just as there was also one October in 2011, 2010, etc. There will be one October per year until further notice.

San Francisco Giants (Cain) @ St. Louis Cardinals (Lohse), 4:00 PM ET, FOX. Game 3 (series tied 1-1)

New York Yankees (Sabathia) @ Detroit Tigers (Scherzer), 8:00 PM ET, TBS. Game 4 (DET leads 3-0, would clinch WS berth with win)

Methinks the Yankees live to fight another day.

Hopefully we get to see Matt Cain be MATT CAIN at least once this postseason.

I've been completely uninterested in these playoffs ever since every single series in the first round went against my wishes. Then I realized while reading the cardinals hate-on thread that the Tigers didn't win in 2006. That must have been the series where the entire pitching staff became completely unable to throw to first base.

So now I'm all aboard the Tigers train. Woo woo!

Thundershowers expected all day in St Louis. I'm not sure whether they're going to get this one in.

Tonight, Girardi will tell the umpires he is waiving the DH rule and will be having Sabathia hit cleanup.

Hey, he's tried everything else.
   5. PepTech Posted: October 17, 2012 at 11:29 AM (#4273923)
Maybe they can get Strousbergh to put on a fake mustache and be their DH; I'm sure he'd love to play in the postseason...

So a quasi-legitimate question. The WS is going to start next Wednesday, even if the LCS are done by Friday. Does the NBA and NHL do that? I don't follow as closely, but it seems to me they start later rounds of the playoffs organically based on when the previous rounds end. Sometimes you get one team sitting for a week, but never both. Is that right, or do I misremember?

Just another way TV pushes as all around, I guess. Are the ratings usually so much higher for MLB to justify this? Or does it not happen enough to matter? Heck, it may not happen here, we could go until Monday on the NLCS.

I don't know what the NBA/NHL do; I suspect that the playoff games are on a fixed schedule due to scheduling issues but I couldn't swear to it. Ever since MLB went to multiple post-season rounds there has been the possibility that a team sweeping a round might have to sit idle for several days while another round is completed. For a baseball team this is not necessarily a bad thing because it would give you the chance to set your rotation as you want it. I would think that for sports that involve more running/skating, having additional days off than your opponent would be to your advantage, that is, having more time to rest.

I think I've watched more of the playoffs and been the most into the playoffs this year that at anytime since I was a kid. They've been great drama.

The NBA makes you wait. All the games are already scheduled for TV. IIRC, the Spurs swept the Clippers, then got to rest for a week, waiting for the Thunder, which allowed them to rest their old man knees.

For those worried or stressed by the fact that the NLCS game might be delayed by rain, have no fear, as I have found THREE videos of the baby walrus (and it's big brother). How have I not seen these before?

This has been today's walrus update.

If they don't, it will be the first time they've been swept in a postseason series since 1980. I believe that covers 35 playoff series.
   11. salvomania Posted: October 17, 2012 at 02:07 PM (#4274224)
Rumors are swirling that they may try to start the NL game even though rain is scheduled to worsen by late afternoon and go through the entire night...

SO, as a manager, if the game does start, do you burn Lohse/Cain for the inning they'll get in before the game is called, and then not have them available for when they resume play tomorrow?

I think you don't use your starter if the game starts today. Rosenthal vs Casilla!

Eduardo Nunez made a diving stop and homered off Justin Verlander. Furtado's programming can't overcome that.

In St Louis about 10-20 miles from the stadium, overcast but not biblical.

Edit:went outside and I can see the sun through the overcast.

   28. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 17, 2012 at 04:23 PM (#4274440)
I hope the "retaliation" talk is over now. Jay was hit, roughly the same value as Scutaro (although I don't think Cain meant to do it). There is an important series to be played here, and the stuff is just tiresome.

I was going to say that he was never very good in the first place, but I had forgotten how well he hit last year (.314/.370/.502!). I don't know quite how teams will value him, but I think it would be fair to give him something like 4/60 with free agent prices so inflated these days.

And wow. Matt Carpenter, clutch god? If he hits another one with his team trailing in the ninth, he'll be the next Raul Ibañez.
   52. Gamingboy Posted: October 17, 2012 at 05:04 PM (#4274540)

That would be nuts, he's not the type of guy you sign to more than a two year contract. Maybe with a third team option if you give him anything approaching 8mil+ a year.

Yes, indeed. What exactly are they putting in the water over there in Saint Louis??? First, Descalso, then Kozma Kramer, now The Other Carpenter. Are they getting secret transfusions from Raul Ibanez???

Don't the Cardinals have any no-ass minor league scrubs who actually stink in the post-season???
   61. Dingbat_Charlie Posted: October 17, 2012 at 05:08 PM (#4274554)
I've been ranting (to myself) all season that if the Cards would only play Carpenter every day they might make the playoffs. They didn't, and they did. Now I don't know what to say to myself (shut up, probably)

He's unquestionably going to get much more than $6M per year. And especially if Nick Swisher actually gets a deal on the order of 7/100, Pence is going to look like good value. 4/60 may be a little high, but remember that the deal that gets made is going to represent the craziest offer, not the consensus (Jayson Werth, anyone?).

I edited that to 8mil after realizing that this years numbers were split.... he's going to be 30 years old, and is roughly a 115 ops+ corner outfielder, that makes him an average player I guess, but it seems that is also the type of player that is fairly easy to replace.

Let me be the first to congratulate the Cardinals for their well-deserved World Series victory.

What's the over/under on inning for first rain delay?

Looks like your higher being of choice just muted the announcers, too.

Erin Andrews says that the groundscrew says 30 minutes away.

I'm sure this has been mentioned on the telecast, but this is the most walks for Lohse since May 8, 2008, at Colorado.

He walked 6 batters total over his last 8 regular-season starts in 2012.

Well, it's an official game now.... right? Or are the rules different nowadays?

With Cain and Lohse pitching...game might be over before any rain delay.

Since the '08 Series, all postseason games are required to be played to completion; it'll be suspended and resumed if necessary.

Incidentally, I thought that Selig making this call in '08 was exactly right, and one of the best decisions he's made.

I read that at first as "ground screw."

The Beltran/Carpenter moment reminds me of Holliday leaving Game 6 of last year's World Series after Beltre lands on his hand. Holliday is then replaced by Craig, who hits a pivotal HR before Freese ties the game up in the ninth. Craig starts for the injured Holliday in Game 7 and hits another HR.

Looking a little light on the bingo card at the moment.

Buck, McCarver and Wainwright should have gotten a room together during that interview segment.

I screwed up and selected a Giants card and can't get rid of it, so I'm not playing today. :(

Me too. Wishful thinking.

You know it'll start raining at the most inopportune time.
