He had 9 starts in the 5th spot in the order this year, which was the third most frequent spot Bochy used him in, after 7th (19 starts) and 6th (16 starts). He even batted cleanup a couple times, so batting him 5th tonight does not seem all that unusual.

His last start in the 5-spot was on August 10; he only started there twice after Pence was acquired.

But my "for whatever it's worth" was mostly tongue in cheek; the difference between the 5th and 6th lineup positions over the course of a single game is miniscule. I was overstretching in my initial post and have been dutifully called on it.

I would imagine Shannon is making the same point on the Cardinal's radio broadcast: HE would have been smart enough to see the bunt was close to the plate and make the decision that McCarver would handle it and stay at third and take the throw. Of course that would have been freaking impossible and they both miss the point that Wainwright could just as well have popped it up because Jay's shot was a bases clearing double even if Yadi had been on first. I am so glad TBS got the ALCS and so dreading whatever brilliance McCarver and Buck will apply to my Tigers I have been watching all year.

I'm of the opinion that the Nats gave away that game more than the Cards out and out won it. Questionable bullpen usage by Davey Johnson had many of us thinking "it's over" by the 8th inning. Storen was gassed after getting used in that lopsided Game 3 so he was worthless in Game 5 after 3 consecutive games. Ah well, I'm getting upset so I'll just let it lie.
