LCS OMNICHATTER DAY 6: ALCS GAME 4 REDUX and NLCS GAME 4 and BASEBALL VS. RAIN

New York Yankees (Sabathia) @ Detroit Tigers (Scherzer), 4:00 PM ET, TBS. Game 4 (DET leads 3-0, would clinch WS berth with win)... hang on, didn’t I type roughly this YESTERDAY? Oh, right, I did. BTW, 60% chance of rain tomorrow, although apparently it will be gone by 4. If not, I’m sure Miller Park’s grounds crew is on call and ready for action

San Francisco Giants (Lincecum) @ St. Louis Cardinals (Wainwright), 8:00 PM ET, FOX. Game 3 (STL leads 2-1). 30% chance of rain.

I'd fake the bunt and let Waino swing away... he's a pretty good hitter...

Sigh, I hate bunting. That looked high too, not that I can really tell because FOX hates baseball.

Cantos was terrible.

That Men's Warehouse guy sure has gotten a lot of mileage out of that "you're going to like the way you look" slogan.
   406. Eric J can SABER all he wants to Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:17 PM (#4276223)
He had 9 starts in the 5th spot in the order this year, which was the third most frequent spot Bochy used him in, after 7th (19 starts) and 6th (16 starts). He even batted cleanup a couple times, so batting him 5th tonight does not seem all that unusual.

His last start in the 5-spot was on August 10; he only started there twice after Pence was acquired.

But my "for whatever it's worth" was mostly tongue in cheek; the difference between the 5th and 6th lineup positions over the course of a single game is miniscule. I was overstretching in my initial post and have been dutifully called on it.

Fer chrissake Kozma oughta be the new Dal Maxvill. He's hitting like the new Gary Templeton.

Jon. Jay.

I love it. Against a LHP, too.

hey 2006 world series. welcome back.

See, nothing to worry about with the Mayans.
Old McCarver is still here:
"Credit Descalso for getting a great jump from Second on that bunt."
"See, I think SAN-chez would have thrown to third, but look...Sandoval is not there."

[Yeah, Tim, he's in charging the obvious bunt? WTF, did Ken Boyer stand there with his foot stapled to third on every bunt when you were behind the plate? Do you even remember playing, Tim?]

2006 rematch, here we come. The Tiger pitching staff had better spend the next five days working on throwing to first base.
   414. cardsfanboy Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:19 PM (#4276232)
You gotta love those loogies.
   415. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:19 PM (#4276234)
Sure. But if Belt were red hot, Bochy could well have made a playoff exception and asked Posey to catch again. Especially since there was a day off in the middle of Posey's three straight starts.

I am talking about last night, tonight, and tomorrow night. I agree if Belt were hot, Posey would be behind the dish. Could someone explain to me what a hot Belt looks like, I am unfamiliar with such a concept.

Of course with the rest of the lineup (non-Pagan division) managing to pop out on 4 or 5 pitch at-bats and pitchers who can't throw strikes, it really doesn't matter what lineup construction the Giants use.

It is almost as if the are paying homage to their NY roots by doing a Yankee impersonation. :::ducks::::

[Yeah, Tim, he's in charging the obvious bunt? WTF, did Ken Boyer stand there with his foot stapled to third on every bunt when you were behind the plate? Do you even remember playing, Tim?]

Boyer was able to charge the bunt and simultaneously cover 3d. Rare skill.

Also, I'm pretty sure I heard him say earlier that Yadier was trying to win a second ring.

This is probably tongue-in-cheek, but just in case...

June 12-23: .441/.568/.882 (15/34, 3 2B, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 9 BB, even two steals).

yep

Holliday has had very nice ABs tonight, with good results. Of course, he pops up as I am typing but, but the point remains. Hopefully he is heating up.
   424. Tim D Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:29 PM (#4276244)
I would imagine Shannon is making the same point on the Cardinal's radio broadcast: HE would have been smart enough to see the bunt was close to the plate and make the decision that McCarver would handle it and stay at third and take the throw. Of course that would have been freaking impossible and they both miss the point that Wainwright could just as well have popped it up because Jay's shot was a bases clearing double even if Yadi had been on first. I am so glad TBS got the ALCS and so dreading whatever brilliance McCarver and Buck will apply to my Tigers I have been watching all year.
   425. Der-K: Hipster doofus Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:31 PM (#4276245)
why are people down on mijares? on the field (so, not in the clubhouse) he's good more often than not.

It was tongue-in-cheek, but thanks for looking it up anyway. So close, just 2 more days and he would have been hot for an ENTIRE 2 WEEKS. Good times
   427. boteman digs the circuit clout Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:33 PM (#4276247)
Sanchez looks lost at the plate in this AB. I thought this is the post-season where scrubs and bench players become HEE-roes?
   428. Gamingboy Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:33 PM (#4276248)
   429. Guts Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:34 PM (#4276250)
Sanchez has not distinguished himself in this game. He looks like a dude who was sitting on the bench for a week.
   430. cardsfanboy Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:37 PM (#4276253)
Nice play by Carpenter.
   431. Guts Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:38 PM (#4276254)
Wainwright still rolling. Let him try another inning?

This is the Adam we needed NLDS Gm 5. Since that worked out, I am glad he showed up tonight.

Giving up 6 runs in 3 innings constitutes "worked out"?

So close, just 2 more days and he would have been hot for an ENTIRE 2 WEEKS. Good times

It's not like the line looks terrible if you add in the o-fers on either side. It slips all the way to .385/.510/.769 from June 10-24.

I thought this is the post-season where scrubs and bench players become HEE-roes?

Only for the Cardinals.
   434. Guts Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:41 PM (#4276260)
Craig breaking more bats.

This lineup could be something if he joined the party.

We can all be heroes. Just for one day. However, the Cardinals have an unlimited number of "one days".

Wainwright was horrible in that game, but Cards did win. So....mostly.

Yadi came to play tonight. Glad to see Cards finally hitting their pen.

Wainwright was horrible in that game, but Cards did win. So....mostly.

I'm of the opinion that the Nats gave away that game more than the Cards out and out won it. Questionable bullpen usage by Davey Johnson had many of us thinking "it's over" by the 8th inning. Storen was gassed after getting used in that lopsided Game 3 so he was worthless in Game 5 after 3 consecutive games. Ah well, I'm getting upset so I'll just let it lie.

I've been known to put on a game in winter just for background, while reading.
   446. Guts Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:57 PM (#4276280)
Yikes! That was ugly.
   447. cardsfanboy Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:58 PM (#4276281)
Cardinals know that any lead can be come back from, so they are still pouring it on.
   448. Guts Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:58 PM (#4276282)
Kozmania is crushing the ball this game. I realize he is going to turn into a pumpkin any second, but this has been an interesting ride.
   449. Gamingboy Posted: October 18, 2012 at 10:59 PM (#4276283)
Kozmania is totally going to be a checklist item tomorrow
   450. boteman digs the circuit clout Posted: October 18, 2012 at 11:01 PM (#4276284)
It's over. Maybe the Giants should practice hitting off the tee this Winter.
   451. cardsfanboy Posted: October 18, 2012 at 11:03 PM (#4276286)
Funny thing, is with all this Kozma and Descalso talk, that they both had a .573 ops for the series coming into this game.

(Just noticed that bb-ref doesn't summarize each years post season stat, that is somewhat disappointing) Although You can go to game logs and do that if you want.
   452. Guts Posted: October 18, 2012 at 11:03 PM (#4276287)
We finally found a situation Matheny trusts Salas in, so that's cool.

Wife is home so now we will watch project runway. Fight again tomorrow, Giants
   460. Guts Posted: October 18, 2012 at 11:22 PM (#4276305)
Good Salas didn't last too long. I wonder how long Matheny will let him hang out there.

Sigh....

Ok, Salas, your blah outing didn't matter. Good thing Cards tacked on a lot of runs.

Good win, again. 3-1 lead, going against Zito tomorrow - have to like the chances there. If that's a Zito CGSO, two games in SF with Carpenter and Lohse going.
   467. esseff Posted: October 19, 2012 at 01:08 AM (#4276358)

But against Vogelsong and Cain; that cuts both ways.
