The sad thing about that, having sat in those seats a couple of times (non-Wall Street connection via my sister-in-law), is that there's no good reason to miss a pitch. You've got waiter service to your seat, of course. But if you don't like the booze on that menu, you've also got dedicated bars not only directly behind home plate but on either end of the section. Down the first base line, between innings you can easily get in and out of the Ketel One-sponsored bar with a beer in hand - there's never been a line in my experience. There's also all kinds of free snack stuff and soft drinks (Cracker Jacks, sunflower seeds, etc.) just inside the door of the main club room that you can also grab easily between innings. Plus, at least at the hottest day games I've attended, free bottled water in ice chests in the aisles, never more than a few steps from your seat.
I always thought/assumed Gretzky was the Ruth of hockey, but IIRC people who actually watch/care about hockey think he's actually pretty overrated, so...maybe that's what Sutcliffe meant.
Genetically, the closest thing to Wayne Gretzky plays in the Cubs system. Didn't do that bad in the Arizona League.
What you need is a former Marlin who finished his career as a Cub, and who emerges from that thing in the Marlins outfield in a new commercial.
Or emerges during a Dolphins game....
Look, when you've got Derek Lowe and there's a high leverage situation, you use Derek Lowe.
I don't watch or care about hockey anymore, but IMO 'pretty overrated' for Gretzky still easily lands him in... top 3? I can't imagine him slipping past top 4-5 all-time, and even that might be a stretch.
Every now and then I hear someone suggest maybe Orr or someone else was better because Gretzky didn't play the physical game / was protected by his linemates.
Football? Walter Payton? Jerry Rice? Hard with football since it's so specialized...
My money's on bang, zoom.
I don't give a toss about hockey, & so have no opinion one way or the other, but I'm pretty sure the Gretzy-is-overrated theme came up on BTF within the last couple of weeks, with more than one person signing on.
In fairness, Davey had used Chad Tracy as a pinch hitter for Clippard. Who else was he going to use in the ninth?
Wilt, I'd say. Like Ruth, he dwarfed all sorts of previous records. Jordan ... didn't, AFAIK, though, y'know, I guess he didn't suck.
You're right, it did come up once recently. There wasn't much of a discussion, one person said he was overrated but still in the conversation as greatest hockey player.
ICHIRO!
Make Verlander the closer on days he doesn't start.
The problem wasn't using Storen in Game 5. The problem was using Storen to close out an 8-0 loss in Game 3, which led to Game 5 being Storen's 3rd appearance in 3 days. If you can get away without using Valverde tonight, you potentially have a more well-rested and, hence, better Valverde in games 2-3-4 if you need him.
(edit: All of this is, of course, setting aside the fact that even a "well-rested and, hence, better Valverde" probably isn't very good.)
Strangely, this one was an accident.
Nearer my god to thee.....
Get Valverde out of this game.
I guess so.
Heh.
And sound like 1500.
Damn him. Damn him.
For the first 20 years of my life (and parts of the next 20), I was a die-hard hockey fan (born/raised in Toronto).
Gretzky is overrated, but still the greatest of all time in the sport.
In general, the "greatest" talk is limited to just 4 players (none of them goalies):
Wayne Gretzky - far too much dominance and recognition of said dominance to be ignored. He still holds all the records, and barring a massive change in goaltending/rules, he will for many many many years.
Gordie Howe - This choice tends to skew heavily to those over 50. "Mr. Hockey" was a very good choice for "greatest of all time". A point producer and a known bad ass on the ice, he is often chosen as the embodiment of what old-time hockey fans wish every player was like. His records (before Gretzky smashed them) were based on 60% skill, 40% longevity.
Bobby Orr - Probably the best contender to legitimately knock Gretzky off the top spot, simply because he was the player that changed the sport. In terms of "Babe Ruth of hockey", he might be the one (where Ruth turned trying to hit HR into a strategy, Orr turned defensemen into an offensive position). Ridiculous amounts of skill, but a brittle body that could have had another 5 years added on easily if he played today (due to medical advancements).
Mario Lemieux - He might be the best combination of skill and size in the history of the sport. Probably the biggest choice among "Gretzky haters" as the best ever. Injuries also hurt his career, but coming back from cancer treatment in the middle of the season (and missing 20 games) and still winning the scoring title? Amazing.
