HOW MANY GAMES WILL GET RAINED OUT TODAY?!
   2. bunyon Posted: October 09, 2017 at 10:41 AM (#5547550)
Three.

If we get a dust storm maybe we could lose all four.
   3. Textbook Editor Posted: October 09, 2017 at 10:53 AM (#5547561)
NY because of the start time looks like it's possible to get in. Boston... eh, doesn't look great, but with the 1pm start time, who knows how long they'd string things along. Would they start, play 3 innings, and then allow a 4-hour delay & restart?
   4. Man o' Schwar Posted: October 09, 2017 at 10:53 AM (#5547562)
If they were playing in SF or Oakland, the game might be smoked out.

Phoenix has a domed stadium, so that game will happen.
   6. Nasty Nate Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:02 AM (#5547572)
It's looking like there is a window from 1-3 in Boston that will be dryish, but rain afterwards. I don't know what the league would decide if they are confident in that forecast.
   7. bunyon Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:06 AM (#5547574)
Sure the Red Sox can get a game in in two hours? :)

Who am I kidding. They might not make it through the third.
   8. TomH Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:11 AM (#5547580)
forecast looks sunny in Chicago. Who says we could lose that one to rain?

As long as the Braves org. isn't in charge of this one.

If the Red Sox game is postponed, then I presume there would be no off-day between games 4 and 5 (if necessary).

Per Rob Bradford tweet:

If it starts pouring around 3-4 p.m., MLB thinks weather window will open up again around 6:30 or 7 p.m.

Sounds like they're gonna try to get this in today no matter what. I'm skeptical this "second window" will actually be a thing until later than 7pm, but who knows.

I'm a bit confused by EdRod's role in the next two games... in that he's never mentioned. Porcello gave up 38 HRs this year and was, IIRC, demonstrably worse at home. Why is EdRod on the roster if he's not going to pitch/shadow Porcello today? He's not a LOOGY...

   13. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:35 AM (#5547598)
Tomorrow's forecast for Chicago isn't ideal. Today it's gorgeous.
   14. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:39 AM (#5547601)
So how would rainouts affect the two affected series?

All four AL bullpens would get a one day respite, but they'd simply be swapping tomorrow's off day for today, since any game 5s would still be played on Wednesday. OTOH the Indians could then use Bauer on four days rest instead of three,** which would give them a big advantage.

** I'd thought Tomlin was starting tonight, but guess not. The schedule now lists Bauer, though he hasn't started on three days rest all year.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the Red Sox game is postponed, then I presume there would be no off-day between games 4 and 5 (if necessary).

Correct.

I don't envy the decision-makers today...
   17. Textbook Editor Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:44 AM (#5547608)
#14--A rainout today in Boston almost certainly means Sale/Verlander is the G4 matchup tomorrow (both would be on 4 days rest). That's a fair bit different from the current plan. If they get the game in, Sale/Verlander go in G5 with 5 days rest.
   18. Nose army. Beef diaper? (CoB) Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:46 AM (#5547611)
Raining now in NY, but looking at the radar, it sure seems like it will clear up by game time.
   19. Textbook Editor Posted: October 09, 2017 at 11:48 AM (#5547612)
The real question is what the teams would do if the Boston-Houston game had to be suspended until tomorrow after starting it today... That would throw all kinds of situations into the mix. Depending on the situation, you could see Sale "starting" the resumption of the game, while it might make more sense for Houston to hold back Verlander for a potential G5 at home.

Gonna be an interesting day, I'm sure. Unless Porcello gives up 3 HRs in the first 2 innings (which totally could happen).

I am assuming Rodriguez is playing the Price role with Porcello starting. Might need someone to close out whatever inning Porcello decides to blow up in, but I'd think Rodriguez would then be out there for the 4th/5th/6th.
   21. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 09, 2017 at 12:06 PM (#5547628)
I wonder if holding back the third-best starter to pitch as a multi-inning reliever might become a thing. If the Red Sox win the series--and it looks like the rain might be delivering it to them on a silver platter--the media will make a huge deal of Price's appearance yesterday. And both Francona and Farrell seem to be moving in that direction.

Price wasn't exactly 'held back' by Farrell. All things being equal I don't think this was what the Sox had in mind for Price prior to his arm injury. I am going to assume they would have rather had him healthy and starting game 2.
   23. bunyon Posted: October 09, 2017 at 12:53 PM (#5547653)
Just checked the radar. Starting in Boston is a mistake.
   24. Textbook Editor Posted: October 09, 2017 at 12:57 PM (#5547655)
There will be persistent rain--there's no "window" that's rain free from the radar I'm looking at. That said... it seems like perhaps later on in the day things might clear out. But the TV gods must be appeased!

This will be one of those games that lasts 8 hours with the inevitable delays...
   25. Nasty Nate Posted: October 09, 2017 at 01:03 PM (#5547660)
Having a quick beer then heading into fenway. Might be the lowest attendance by percentage for a Sox playoff game ever.

Pedroia's was off the plate according to the Fox zone, but less so than Bradley's. He's also calling it wide on the other side of the plate. And it's not like Morton was peppering strikes in there, he just walked Vazquez on 4 pitches.

Farrell had to get rung to keep Pedroia from being rung. In fairness to Farrell, that ejection is on Pedroia.

And Porcello starts the 3rd. ####### kill me now.

Why is Sale warming now if everyone thinks rain will delay the game by 3:15? Wouldn't it make more sense to throw bullpen arms now and Sale after the delay??

I don't get this. I missed the full incident, but if the ump let Farrell go quite a while before the heave-ho, certainly he could have stopped and stayed in. Heck, drag Pedroia back to the dugout. Have a coach do it while Farrell argues.
   83. bunyon Posted: October 09, 2017 at 02:36 PM (#5547768)
K-zone showed the pitch to Pedroia as a ball but it was a lot closer than it looked live.

Umps do (and definitely should) give players more room to argue in the postseason. They give managers a bit more but not nearly as much. Which is fine as everyone knows that the manager will just manage from the runway. You can't play 2B from the runway.

Well, Farrell didn't look interested in staying in the game; Wegner turned away a couple of times and Farrell kept getting more and more animated (and you could read his lips "that's ####### bullshit" over and over). At some point, the 1b coach was dragging Pedroia back to the dugout while the argument continued. So in essence, what you want did happen, but at some point the ump had to send him out...

Yeah, the argument went about as you'd expect. Pedroia is a pretty emotional player and it was a bad call, which followed another K on a bad call. Neither call was terribly egregious but both bad and in the same direction. Farrell wasn't just protecting Pedroia, he was having his say in the event an ump can be swayed by such things (probably not, IMHO, but those in the game feel sure it is true). And the ump did give him a good, long scream. Aside from the bad calls and Pedroia's over-reaction, all else was pretty professional.

Managers - at least Farrell in this case - must think they can make a difference in what an ump does purely by being tossed. I can see it when a skipper gets tossed to fire his team up, but who needs to be motivated when you're in the playoffs?
