I'm still not over losing the division to this team.

I'm still not over losing the division to this team.

Eh. I see what I think you're saying, in that you wouldn't expect a team with that rotation (which isn't awful, just non-descript) to win 96 games, but the team's really good in all other respects and they played so well down the stretch I can't really be too upset with how things shook out. I'd feel differently if the Cubs had shat the bed, but they really didn't.

Honestly (and with no sour grapes intended), I wasn't particularly excited about watching the Cub offense flail its way to an LDS defeat, which is what I think would've happened had the Cubs and Brewers faced off. They seemed vulnerable to me; had they won the division, I think it would've been akin to the 2015 Central race--the Cards won the division, but the Cubs were clearly the better team by the time October rolled around, and the LDS was a data point in favor of that proposition.

Welp--fix the holes, fire Chili, and go get 'em next year. Thus endeth the Cubs hijack.
   4. Spahn Insane Posted: October 11, 2018 at 04:28 PM (#5764790)
I can't really decide who to root for in either series, so I'll hope for exciting games, or at least more exciting than the LDS round was. To this point, I'm not sure I've ever seen a less interesting postseason. (Except the 9th inning of game 4 in the Bronx, which was pretty damn entertaining. That's the last inning played to this point, so perhaps it's a harbinger of further dramatics. Boston/Houston should be one hell of a series.)

Rooting interest:

Brewers over Dodgers
Astros over Red Sox

World Series:

Astros over Brewers

Predictions:
Dodgers over Brewers
Astros over Red Sox

World Series:
Astros over Dodgers

I'm just glad the Indians and Braves are gone for the season, though I wish that somehow the Dodgers could have joined them and left the Brewers and the Cubs to battle it out again. And yes, I know.
   7. Spahn Insane Posted: October 11, 2018 at 04:41 PM (#5764804)
OK, fine, I'll play. If pushed to it, I sorta want the Astros to beat the Red Sox and the Brewers to beat the Dodgers, and come to think of it, that's how I think it'll shake out. (As with the WS, where I think the Astros beat the Brewers, though I think the Brewers take 'em to at least 6 games.)

Yeah, but they definitely let out a few pretty foul Dutch ovens along the way. I blame Chili.

Gio and Miley does not exactly instil fear in the top of any decent lineup. I still can't believe the Crew won 96 games. Unfortunately for them I think they'll be Dodger fodder and get cleaned up in 5.

I'm going with Boston in 6 in the AL. Yeah, Houston, blah, blah, blah...but I'm a total homer and I think the 108 win team(plus 2 on the road in NY) has got the guiding hand of baseball luck this year with them. Going to NY and winning both was unexpected and in spite of the fact that Mookie was quiet at the dish. Boston has had an amazing season and I think that will continue through to...

The World Series where they will squeak by LA in 7.

With Gio starting Game 1 I'm afraid the NLCS will go to the Dodgers in 1.

After that, it's only a matter of spinning the roulette wheel to find out which network carries each particular game. What a mess!

Also: baseball is dying.

Prediction:
Brewers over Dodgers
Astros over Red Sox

Astros over Brewers

I'd love to see the Brewers win it all now that Cleveland's done, but the Astros just have so so so much stuff. That run differential is an all-timer, and they did that with a badly diminished Carlos Correa. It's a great, great team.
   18. PreservedFish Posted: October 11, 2018 at 05:54 PM (#5764839)
I wanted the Yankees and Braves out, and I got my wish, so right now I'm stoked. I'm probably rooting for the Brewers but I'd be happy for any of these teams. Hoping for a lot of good games.

but the Astros just have so so so much stuff.

They do. And if they played these games on paper, the Astros would clean up. However these short series are crazy unpredictable at times, a WP there, a seeing eye single there and a game or 2 is lost. We really did end up with the 4 best teams and any one of them would be a worthy champ. I just think, from the 17-2 start through the whole season the Red Sox have something going and I think it'll continue all the way through.

As a Red Sox fan I would love to see them win it all. I would not be disappointed if either the Crew or Dodgers won since it would be something different. The Astros won it last year and just that alone has them 4th on my list of teams I want to win. They are fun to watch and have a lot of likeable players(Osuna notwithstanding), but I like seeing someone new win it if my guys can't.

The Dodgers fear Lefties in general, and will weaken the lineup, likely sitting Muncy for both. Turner has reverse splits, I think.

The real question will be if the Brewers can hit well-rested Kershaw and Buehler.
   21. Bote Man Posted: October 11, 2018 at 07:54 PM (#5764896)
Doesn't Kershaw have the rep of falling down in the playoffs? If so, maybe the Brewers don't have to worry so much.

Yes, the Brewers have played well for a good month but they have also had a lot of breaks go their way here and there during certain games. I don't have high expectations, but I'll be disappointed if they get rolled by LAD. I'm still thinking Houston keeps rolling.

FWIW Gio has a 1.89 career ERA in 38 innings against LA, although he did spit the bit when he faced them in the 2016 Division Series. Miley's career ERA against them is 3.55. Not that they'll be allowed to go more than 5 innings at most, but I just thought I'd put it out there.

Sox against Astros, 2018 (7 games): .265/.323/.429

Astros against Sox, 2018 (7 games): .265/.340/.453

I'm just going to pretend that in addition to SSS, because the Stros rotation is more consistently excellent the Red Sox are more likely to narrow that gap in a short series.

Kershaw's not carrying the whole pitching staff this go 'round.

Looks like the Dodgers have swapped out Scott Alexander for Julio Urias. Interesting.

   37. Tony S Posted: October 12, 2018 at 05:16 PM (#5765335)
Just a few random thoughts.

For all the sniping, Kershaw's postseason record isn't bad. It's just not quite up to his near-impossible regular-season standards. Kershaw had a brilliant start last year against the best offense in baseball, then one bad one, then an airtight four-inning Game 7 relief appearance on short rest, which kept his team very much in the game. He was near-unhittable in his one start against the Braves. I'll take that performance in a heartbeat.

The Brewers don't really impress me all that much. They're a bit like the Royals of 2015, an OK offense (essentially one great hitter and one good one having a career year), meh starting pitching, and a deep, formidable bullpen. They might pull it off this year (though the Royals never faced an offense like LA's), but this doesn't seem to be a highly sustainable success model. But maybe they can sustain it for eight more wins...

While anything can happen in a short series, the fact that the Astros won 103 games with three of their four best position players missing significant time with injuries is something that would make me gulp now that they're back at full strength (except for Correa). That said, their lineup doesn't look quite as formidable as it did last year, and they have an offensive black hole at catcher. I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox take the series.
