Steve Pearce gave it his all on that one.

There should have been people here to catch him.

Was the Altuve HR called interference challenged?

Braiser has been amazing. Call him broiler, cause he gets thick business done quick.

Boundary call. Review came from the crew chief.

You know, they never really said; could be because it was a possible HR situation it was an ump review.

Correia seems to be feeling much better.

Yes. Couldn't be overturned due to non-conclusive evidence.

MOOKIE'S REP SAVES A RUN.

edit: Oh, challenged? Not Sure.
   1811. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:08 AM (#5769826)
Man, how does he not score there with 2 outs?
   1812. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:08 AM (#5769827)
That was a gift. Barnes, please make them pay for not scoring.
   1813. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:10 AM (#5769828)
This sets up so Kimbrel would likely face the heart of the order, even if Barnes TCB in the 8th. Ugh.

What is it like to hit an 80+ MPH pitch? I spent a buck for a few pitches at the cage ten years ago and was terrified.

And breathe.

That was a hell of a clutch hook for the K.

   1819. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:17 AM (#5769834)
Regardless of what happens here, that felt like Brasier's coming out party--Cora trusts him, and now trusts him to get 6 outs. That's a huge development, both for the rest of this postseason and next year.

Remember when Okajima came into a game at Yankee Stadium and dazzled really early in the season, when we weren't quite sure what stuff he was made of? That inning had the same feel to it.
1820. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:17 AM (#5769835)

As someone who wanted to be a badass as a 20-25 year old I spent a lot of time at batting cages despite no discernible talent. I can tell you, though, that if you regularly see really fast pitches you do pick them up better. You still won't be able to make good contact with them because you only have mediocre at best reflexes, but you'll be able to at least see the pitch and have a very rough idea of where it's going.
1821. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:18 AM (#5769836)
Springer looks like a doof when he gets a big hit and when making a tough play. I really like him for that.
   1822. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:19 AM (#5769837)
So... Kimbrel has never had a save of more than 4 outs.

That was a hell of a clutch hook for the K.

How the hell does Tyler White strike out looking in that situation? Watched the same curveball land in the zone for strike two and three.

He's not insufferable like McCarver, but he's not great.

Which is weird, because he's honestly great on the Mets broadcasts.

Houston fans should know Kimbrel is good for at least 2 runs tonight. This isn't a bridge too far yet.

He might be tired.

1836--maybe he falls back on platitudes when he doesn't know the players/teams as much? He's probably barely seen AL teams this year unless they faced the Mets...

1841. Fancy Crazy Town Banana Pants Handle Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:29 AM (#5769856)
It was the "the Red Sox have decided to not risk it here, figuring there will be a passed ball in every at bat" line (or something close to it).

Except 1) Mookie had tried to steal second like a minute earlier, only Benintendi flew out on the pitch, and he had to go back.

And 2) Wild pitch / passed ball is good if you are on second too! Or on third! Why would you not want to steal second, because you might get other free bases?

CAN THE RED SOX GET 6 OUTS BEFORE GIVING UP 3 RUNS, AN OPEN QUESTION.

I honestly don't know.

If Barnes can get 3 outs here... it's possible. If Kimbrel comes into the 8th I think there's no way they escape.

Betts just made up for Kimbrel big-time.
1848. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:32 AM (#5769863)
that could be, TE. Also, Gary Cohen is one of the best PBP people in the business and does a good job setting up Darling and Keith Hernandez for their bits. Which I wouldn't be shocked if that's something the TBS broadcast doesn't focus on as much. It'd be interesting to see if Darling would have been better in the NLCS.

It could also be a chemistry thing, I don't think Nats fans liked Darling much when he was a color guy with them before going to NY.

FTR, I didn't call Darling an idiot because of chemistry in the booth, or platitudes or things like that. I did it because seemingly every other time he opens his mouth, something really stupid comes out of it.
   1855. PeteF3 Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:34 AM (#5769870)

   1858. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:35 AM (#5769873)
There's just no reason to ask Kimbrel to get 6 outs when Barnes threw limited pitches in the 7th. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
1859. Fancy Crazy Town Banana Pants Handle Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:35 AM (#5769874)
Will Cora realise that Kimbrel has nothing in fewer than 4 innings? All signs from earlier in the game, point to 'no.'

1869. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:38 AM (#5769885)
LOL, Price up in the bullpen. I'm psychotically optimistic about Price, but even I don't want him pitching in the 9th.
1870. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:38 AM (#5769886)
QUESTION: If Verlander enters a bathroom on game day and there IS NO THIRD STALL, does he just squat down and take a dump on the floor next to stall #2? Inquiring minds want to know.
Funny, I was thinking earlier today that it's a bit unusual to build a major advertising campaign around Justin Verlander's defecatory habits.
   1871. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:38 AM (#5769887)
So if David Price pitches, who starts tomorrow?

Earlier I suggested they would DL Hembree with a hangnail and call up Velasquez or Pomeranz, god help us.
   1872. puck Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:39 AM (#5769889)
So you go all in on this game and lose, game 5 looks bad then?
1873. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:40 AM (#5769890)
Craig, it's not the 9th inning. Another out doesn't end the game.

Just 1 more 9 ERA inning and it's in the bag.
   1877. puck Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:41 AM (#5769894)
So if Counsell is managering, what's Cora doing?
   1878. Chip Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:42 AM (#5769895)
He actually got two swings and misses, which is a vast improvement on recent performance, especially given the part of the order he was in.

Is Papelbon available?
   1880. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:43 AM (#5769897)
IF--IF!!!--they survive this without Price coming in, my guess is they tell Price "Give us 3 IP or 50 P" and then Workman for 2 & Hembree for 2 and just see where you are. Barnes could get you some outs. Kelly too--maybe he closes. Then you have Price for innings in Game 6/7 if needed.
1881. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:43 AM (#5769898)
I don't trust Kimbrel OR Price in the 9th. I'd rather pick a random bullpen arm.

OK, no I wouldn't, but if Kimbrel pitches like he did in the eighth in the ninth, I am demoting him from closer after tonight. Let him pitch earlier in future games until he shows he can actually get outs.

   1886. Textbook Editor Posted: October 18, 2018 at 12:48 AM (#5769904)
FWIW... The Astros have gone fairly deep into the pen tonight. IF the Red Sox can just get Verlander's pitch count up, they have a shot tomorrow, I think.

Leaving Holt in here against the LHP feels significant... like maybe Kinsler won't start again this season, but only come in as a late defensive sub (like Pokey Reese).

Yeah I can see this, because then you have Sale healthy and on extra rest, you rest all important bullpen guys, pull Price early, and have everything loaded for bear and 2 home games to close it out.
