Also a huge relief is that Kimbrel looked vastly better tonight. He struck out two of the four batters he faced on three pitches, and his only real moment of bad pitching was walking Gurriel. If he's back to being his regular season mostly reliable self, then the Sox pen looks OK for innings 7, 8, and 9.

I'm super psyched for David Price, that's gotta be a big weight off his shoulders.

I can't remember ever watching a series before and thinking the deciding factor was outfield defense.
   2303. Lyford Posted: October 19, 2018 at 09:47 AM (#5770938)
The "Make 'em Laugh" dance number (in Singin' in the Rain) has more athleticism than a typical home run hit. Discuss.

What is there to discuss? It's a self-evidently true statement...
   2304. perros Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:08 AM (#5771049)
that 17-game difference b/w the two teams probably indicates a difference in quality.

Dodgers haven't beaten Milwaukee yet, are lucky the Brewers haven't eliminated them... hell, lucky to have even made the playoffs. But laat time they won the Series, they beat two superior 100-win teams to do so. And they aren't exactly the same team that was ten games under .500 mid-May.

The Red Sox have been great all year, and knocked off a pair of 1000-win clubs to make the series. They should beat the NL Champs no problem.
   2305. Textbook Editor Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:24 AM (#5771071)
The best possible outcome for the Red Sox would be a 7 game series where Kershaw throws multiple innings in G7. That scenario MIGHT keep him out until a G3 start in LA should the Dodgers win. I'm not sure going to 7 hurts the Brewers all that much should they win. I suppose if it's really cold in Boston they might not be *that* used to it, having come off a series indoors and in LA, but other than that the way they approach/line up the pitching I'm not sure much matters.

I will say this: I have thought in 2004, 2007, and 2013 that the Red Sox scouting meant the team always had a really good approach to how to attack the other team in the WS; I expect the same would be the case still now, but I'm really curious how that will play out.

Surely a first in baseball, nay, sports history.

Surely a first in baseball, nay, sports history.

Only if you're counting season wins only. If you're counting franchise wins it happens all the time.

I'm also hoping for a seven game NLCS, but that's because I want the Brewers to win.
   2308. Baldrick Posted: October 19, 2018 at 01:59 PM (#5771255)
It's pretty amazing that the Red Sox managed to win in five games, considering they were (as I gather from the chatter here) being managed by the dumbest person on earth.
2309. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 02:11 PM (#5771263)
Eh, Farrell won a World Series too and he managed his way to two last place finishes in the AL East.

And we were RIGHT about what we were complaining about, at least as far as Devers over Nunez and taking out Porcello. That counts for something.
   2310. Textbook Editor Posted: October 19, 2018 at 02:21 PM (#5771272)
And we were RIGHT about what we were complaining about, at least as far as Devers over Nunez and taking out Porcello.

As god is my witness, if Nunez is deemed healthy he's gonna start at 3B against Kershaw. And it'll still make zero sense.
   2311. perros Posted: October 19, 2018 at 02:30 PM (#5771286)
Surely a first in baseball, nay, sports history.

Heh. I was pulling for the Red Sox because I really hate them and it'd add max fuel to the series. If the Dodgers win.

Pretty calm this year, not uptight about the Brewers series, and nobody can think they wouldn't be underdogs to the Sox. Still, my supertitions are kicking in. Three series in Braves towns, Dave Roberts back to Boston, Number 30 and 30 years since last Series win. Eck will be on the field....

It'd be fun. At least as fun as five-hour baseball games can be.
   2312. perros Posted: October 19, 2018 at 02:33 PM (#5771288)
In all actuality, the Dodgers are better overall, more talent, less pressure. Doesn't mean they'll win, but least there's no Yu Darvish.

Didn't want to play Houston again 'cos I'm still bitter.
   2313. phredbird Posted: October 19, 2018 at 08:44 PM (#5771446)

well, i was wondering why roberts was letting freese bat first.

it's because his sh1t works in the playoffs, apparently.
2314. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: October 19, 2018 at 08:52 PM (#5771448)
The Machado at bat with the constant booing and cheering was one of the best parts of this postseason.
   2315. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 08:52 PM (#5771449)
Machado a solid heel.

2317: the 2010 Rangers are the first ones I remember doing it. The antlers thing.
   2323. Baldrick Posted: October 19, 2018 at 09:31 PM (#5771461)
Dodger offense can definitely peg back a four run deficit. But they're getting very close to having a much bigger problem on their hands.

That's the tailgate forecast. We tailgate in Milwaukee.
2326. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 19, 2018 at 09:50 PM (#5771471)
That's a warm, good weather forecast for tailgating.

OK, what'd I miss?
   2330. Lassus Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:09 PM (#5771481)
Because you're all so concerned, I was doing some shopping. We moved to a new house on a slow dead-end street, so we're GONNA have kids coming. I bought the following: Reeses Peanuts Butter cups. Not the minis, not the singles, none of that crap. Full, two-cup regular packages. Also, to expose these local children to GOOD chocolate, Lindt filled truffles and Ghirardelli caramel-filled chocolate squares. The other houses are totally going to get shit-talked.

ANYHOW, four runs is doable. I don't like the Dodgers chances in a game seven, they're going to choke.
   2331. puck Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:10 PM (#5771482)

Has anyone mentioned how slow the pace is and made fun of anyone claiming to enjoy the game?

Whoa that was a gapper.

that play at the plate was way too close for comfort.

What bugged me is I was out, and while in the car, could not find a FM or AM station carrying the game. The ones that sometimes have the national games had football games on.
   2337. Lassus Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:25 PM (#5771491)
Well, Turner can't do everything all the time.
   2338. Lassus Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:27 PM (#5771492)
This reaction to Machado is fun.
   2339. puck Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:27 PM (#5771493)
I guess they don't watch you to listen the game on the radio. I don't know how you even find the info. ESPN radio I assume, but I've not found anything on the MLB website.
   2340. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:31 PM (#5771495)
How do you not know which am/fm stations are espn affiliates. It is not hard.
   2341. Tin Angel Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:32 PM (#5771496)
Da ding is, could Machado handle the pressure in New Yawk?
   2342. winnipegwhip Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:32 PM (#5771497)
Google. How long will games get in the post season until ratings go in the crapper.
   2343. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:33 PM (#5771498)
To be fair locally our espn affiliate has high school football playoffs on. I use mlbAB anyways or xm

How would one know? (While in the car.) I don't tune in for talk radio.

The one I know of was playing football.
   2345. phredbird Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:39 PM (#5771501)

puck, you can listen to radio feeds on your iphone or galaxy or whatever if you have MLB At Bat app. i used it when i was on the road for part of one of the games last week.
   2346. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5771503)
I would not award Kratz first base for that performance.
   2347. puck Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5771504)
Interesting choice to let Knebel hit.
   2348. puck Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5771505)
You don't need a subscription for the radio feeds?
2349. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:43 PM (#5771506)
Heh. The Hamlet routine with Knebel and the pinch-hitter amuses me.
   2350. Tin Angel Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:43 PM (#5771507)
This is pretty crazy right? Bases loaded, two outs, and letting a relief pitcher hit?
   2351. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:43 PM (#5771508)
I recall ggrame lloyd had a nice ab in 1996 ws
   2352. PeteF3 Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:44 PM (#5771509)
And Mike Jackson hit a 2-run double for the Reds in the '95 NLDS that sealed the door on the Dodgers.

my bad, i assumed you have a subscription.

   2355. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:44 PM (#5771512)
I don't think it was that nice but not shameful when they still needed him.

"The Aristo-kratz."
2358. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:50 PM (#5771516)
The move makes sense for the Brewers. They have a bullpen plan, and Knebel pitching is a big part of it. They can hold a 3-run lead with this pen, they don't need another run if they have Knebel around for another inning.
   2359. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:51 PM (#5771518)
No need to look for shoe polish there.
   2360. puck Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:52 PM (#5771519)

I should, but it's such an occasional thing where I'd be looking for a national game.

   2361. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 10:54 PM (#5771520)
I drive a decent amount thus my AM FM aptitude is high, though I have xm

Gotta be honest, this whole thing kinda makes me wish the Cubs sign him even more.

I bought the following: Reeses Peanuts Butter cups. Not the minis, not the singles, none of that crap. Full, two-cup regular packages.

IMO the ratio of chocolate to peanut butter in the minis is superior than in the full cups.

Puck, I think the ESPN station in Denver is 104.3.
   2365. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:07 PM (#5771527)
I would guess KOA but that's their 50k power network I suspect. You can pick up KOA easily in Wisconsin on a clear night.
   2366. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:08 PM (#5771529)
Fm nets got smart buying rights to esp n radio in the 90s, though that was often a Corp which owned several stations.
   2367. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:08 PM (#5771530)
KOA carries the Rockies (and Broncos) but no national sports.
   2368. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:10 PM (#5771533)
I'm guessing I'm in the top 2% of most kids on a trick or treat night. High density suburban neighborhood, lit well, safe, high % of kids with some condos apts in development w families.. We probably blow through 8 bags of stuff.
   2369. Baldrick Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:15 PM (#5771535)
I'm all for the Brewers winning this game (more baseball!), but I'm going to need the Dodgers to start making a little noise. Stumbling peacefully through these final few innings wouldn't be much fun.
   2370. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:21 PM (#5771539)
I have to coach a volleyball tournament from 9-2 Saturday. I'm going to be a wreck either way. Poor 4th graders. They've played so well this season.
   2371. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:22 PM (#5771541)
If any kids ring my bell on Halloween, all they're getting is no-nonsense career advice.

Interesting. I think the small size makes them inferior, but I suppose I can understand that.

Does everyone else laugh really #### hard at that MLB network commercial where they show all the ex-players walking out with the voiceover of their playing accomplishments - Thome, DeRosa, Leiter, Casey - and then they're all walking out and all of a sudden Harold Reynolds is there too (but he didn't get the highlight treatment)?
   2374. puck Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:26 PM (#5771544)

2395. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:41 PM (#5771570)
2392- no, but a good catcher might - *might* - block that. We're blaming him to going to sleep on that nubber from Arcia, when it's his job to tell the pitcher where to throw the ball and they would have had Aguilar by 10 feet at 3rd. And also, being garbage the rest of this series.
   2396. PeteF3 Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:42 PM (#5771572)
I doubt very much that Johnny Bench could have blocked that ball.
   2397. Howie Menckel Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:45 PM (#5771573)
What justification is there for Aguilar not to be running out of the box there?

MLB teams spend millions looking for micro-advantages in winning.

imagine if a team just decided to tell their hitters that they will be fined every time they don't hustle out of the box on a ball that they hit beyond the infield? we see countless examples of lost bases, and even outs, because of the "ESPN highlight look."

(generally better if they hustle on any fair ball, but health of hitter and likelihood of out and mostly only a chance of one base. so you start with the long hits and work from there.)

   2399. Lassus Posted: October 19, 2018 at 11:45 PM (#5771575)
I know it's a small thing, but that throw from Arcia there is almost worth all the pitching changes.
