Alden Gonzalez, ESPN Staff Writer

The Dodgers will not announce their Game 2 starter yet. Dave Roberts said he chose Walker Buehler for Game 1 in large part because lining him up for a potential Game 5 gives his team the best chance to advance. On a rotation with the greatest pitcher of his generation and the potential Cy Young, that says a lot.
Are Kershaw & Ryu ailing? Buehler is pretty good, but regular season stats suggest Kershaw & Ryu were better.
   2. Bug Selig Posted: October 03, 2019 at 04:15 PM (#5886041)
Nationals were very good against LHP this year, FWIW.

Buehler has the highest K-rate, and lowest FIP of the three. His ERA is only worse because of a low strand rate. He also pitched best down the stretch, IIRC.
   4. Baldrick Posted: October 03, 2019 at 05:13 PM (#5886074)
We're about 12 minutes into the series and I'm already absolutely sick of the Barves fans.
   5. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 05:17 PM (#5886077)
Molina has a passable arm.
   6. Baldrick Posted: October 03, 2019 at 05:43 PM (#5886090)
Cardinals are extremely lucky to only be down 1-0. A caught stealing and a botched sacrifice keeping them in the game right now.
   7. bunyon Posted: October 03, 2019 at 05:48 PM (#5886091)
Yeah, the braves are going to regret the first two innings
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:13 PM (#5886095)
second consecutive inning with a 5-3 double play.
   9. bunyon Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:26 PM (#5886100)
You can have too many 5-3 double plays.
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:34 PM (#5886101)
Cardinals are 5th best in NL with runners in scoring position? Seriously? I don't think the Cardinals got a hit with a runner in scoring position during the month of September.
   11. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:37 PM (#5886102)
This is a very short leash for Dallas Keuchel.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:37 PM (#5886103)
ridiculously short leashes for the starters...
   13. bunyon Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:38 PM (#5886104)
Yeah, this is weird. Has anyone hit a ball hard this inning?
   14. Sit down, Sleepy has lots of stats Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:38 PM (#5886105)
Wow, into the bullpen in the 5th inning.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:39 PM (#5886106)
I'm never a fan of using the relievers more than you have to in the first game or two of a series... the more exposure that the other team has to them, the better they can time them.
   16. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:42 PM (#5886107)
Nice play by Swanson. That gets past him, and the pitching change would have looked REALLY bad.
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:44 PM (#5886108)
Alden Gonzalez, ESPN Staff Writer

The Nationals will start Stephen Strasburg in Game 2, with no limitations, Dave Martinez said. Max Scherzer is lined up to start Game 3, and No. 4 starter Anibal Sanchez might be available out of the bullpen in the meantime.
Could work.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:45 PM (#5886109)
I'm loving the mic'ed up Albies... great choice from TBS.
   19. bunyon Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:46 PM (#5886110)
Someone remind Snitker that the rosters are back to 25.
   20. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:53 PM (#5886113)
Cardinals pen scares me these days...I hope Mikolas stays in as long as possible
   21. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 06:59 PM (#5886115)
I love how the TBS crew describes Molina (OPS+ of 85) as a "dangerous hitter."
   22. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:02 PM (#5886116)
Wow. That was ugly.
   23. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:03 PM (#5886118)
Birds' 0-for-8 with RISP so far seems about right for a Cardinals' game.
   24. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:08 PM (#5886120)

cardinals doing what the cardinals do when they get men on base.

cr@p.
   25. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:12 PM (#5886121)
Nice. Reliever comes in, next thing you know bases are loaded with nobody out.

EDIT: Sorry, missed the first out.
   26. Sit down, Sleepy has lots of stats Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:17 PM (#5886122)
Pitch #3 to cervelli was clearly a strike on game day.

Oh well got him on #5.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:18 PM (#5886123)
looked like a strike in real life, but tbs strikezone said it was a ball.
   28. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:18 PM (#5886124)
Oh boy. I don't make that call. The Cardinals get a huge break.
   29. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:19 PM (#5886125)
Birds get a huge break on that checked swing strike 3.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:19 PM (#5886126)
borderline call from the first base ump on that half swing... umps giveth, umps taketh away.
   31. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:22 PM (#5886128)

how warm is it in atlanta? everybody is really sweating.
   32. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:22 PM (#5886129)
Well, that's gotta hurt.
   33. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:23 PM (#5886130)

you have got to be ####### kidding me.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:24 PM (#5886131)
uggh....
   35. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:25 PM (#5886132)
I'm not sure why they're giving Swanson credit here. That's a double-play ball he hit.
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:25 PM (#5886134)
It is definitely an error from Edman.
   37. Mike A Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:26 PM (#5886136)
how warm is it in atlanta? everybody is really sweating.

Weather app says it's 89 outside. At 7:30. In October.

ATL used to have about 35 days a year over 90, this year we're closing in on 87 days above 90 or something stupid like that. It's been, in a word, brutal.

Braves got lucky, but I'll take it after that 'swing' call.
   38. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:26 PM (#5886137)
Did that take a bit of a weird hop on Edman? If so, the Braves score two runs on two bad-luck-grounders, a HBP, and two walks.

Either way, the Braves put the ball in play with a runner on 3rd and scored; the Cardinals couldn't do that.
   39. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:29 PM (#5886138)
You can't assume the double play. But that is a clear error.

There were two outs; just needed to get one.
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:31 PM (#5886139)
Did that take a bit of a weird hop on Edman?

yes a weird hop... bounced up, hit his chest, deflected to DeJong, who then tried to get the guy at second and didn't make a good throw... (Wong was as much at fault, the runner was going to be safe, he should have focused on fielding the ball)
   41. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:32 PM (#5886141)
Official scorer says error, error.
   42. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:35 PM (#5886143)
Woulda been nice to steal this Game 1 with Flaherty going in Games 2 and 5, but it doesn't look like it's gonna happen.

That 6th inning was so frustrating---two runs on no hard-hit balls, some bad luck, and some sloppy play. That said, it's your own damn fault if you hit the leadoff man.
   43. TomH Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:38 PM (#5886145)
Who woulda thunk, the team with only SIXTY SIX errors all year; almost a new record low; makes 3 in the first part of game 1.
   44. Howie Menckel Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:40 PM (#5886147)
was gonna ask for a reason to root for either of those teams - or against one.

then I heard the pathetic Tomahawk Chop chant, and I have my answer.
   45. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:41 PM (#5886148)

huh, acuna not hustling again.

with our luck today, it won't matter.
   46. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:41 PM (#5886149)
Acuna turns a double into a single. Great play by Fowler though.
   47. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:41 PM (#5886150)
So...who’s gonna defend Acuna on that one?
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:49 PM (#5886151)
Cardinals 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position... they suck... Braves are 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.... they suck more but are winning... (although there is the argument the error was a hit)
   49. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:50 PM (#5886152)
That's 5 baserunners put on by the Cardinal relievers so far in an inning and a third...
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:52 PM (#5886153)
That is more defensible... not sure Acuna could have done anything to prevent that double play.
   51. Tin Angel Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:55 PM (#5886154)
Well, if he had hustled even a little he would have been on third at that point.
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:59 PM (#5886155)
One run game again.....
   53. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 03, 2019 at 07:59 PM (#5886156)
Think he got all of that one.
   54. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:00 PM (#5886157)
I wish Ozuna had a more disciplined approach. He could be such a great hitter.
   55. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:00 PM (#5886158)
A shot like that, it’s ok to carry your bat and hop halfway to first base. Which he did not do.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:03 PM (#5886159)
scoring change... hit and error...
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:04 PM (#5886160)
Donaldson didn't field that???? man that guy sucks...
   58. Baldrick Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:15 PM (#5886163)
Absolutely love the baserunning in this game.
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:15 PM (#5886164)
damnit....
   60. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:15 PM (#5886165)
Wong tried to score from 1B on a single?
   61. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:15 PM (#5886166)
That had to be more of a shitty send than a great throw, right?
   62. Mike A Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:16 PM (#5886167)
Brave/ATL postseason luck is Martin inexplicably getting hurt and having to pitch Luke Jackson instead. Sigh.
   63. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:16 PM (#5886168)
I say that because the doofus play-by-play TBS guy was touting the throw before the commercial. Maybe Darling will correct him.
   64. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:17 PM (#5886170)

aw geez ... if there was ever a time to try to run down the catcher, was that it?

would that have been legal?
   65. Howie Menckel Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:17 PM (#5886171)
the throw by Duvall was stellar

also, it was a 3-2 count so Wong was running on the pitch

but yes, also shitty send
   66. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:17 PM (#5886172)
The runner slowed down before 2B, dipshits.

Come on, Ron.
   67. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:18 PM (#5886173)
He was in shallow left. It just didn't seem special, it seemed like he did his job.

I mean, he was out by a mile WITH running on the pitch. That just seems like a crappy send. YMMV
   68. The Rare Albino Shrieking Goat of Guatemala. Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:19 PM (#5886174)
That had to be more of a shitty send than a great throw, right?

Yeah. Very nice throw, but anything better than a terrible throw would likely have gotten Wong, he still had at least 1/3rd of the distance to the plate to go when the ball reached the catcher.
   69. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:20 PM (#5886176)
Saw the video. That's an awful send.

Yeah. Very nice throw, but anything better than a terrible throw would likely have gotten Wong, he still had at least 1/3rd of the distance to the plate to go when the ball reached the catcher.

Yup. Anything the catcher can catch gets Wong.
   70. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:22 PM (#5886177)
These managers are aware they allow extra innings in the playoffs? ATL is down to one reliever and their three SPs in the pen.
   71. Howie Menckel Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:23 PM (#5886178)
I play in a very deep, traditional Rotisserie NL baseball league; few gems go unclaimed.

I never heard of new STL RP Ryan Helsley.
   72. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:29 PM (#5886179)
10 pitches and Helsley is out of there?

I'm really rooting for this to go 13 innings, so I can see managers using position players to pitch in a tied playoff game.
   73. JJ1986 Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:30 PM (#5886180)
The Braves have Tomlin and Newcomb left in the pen.
   74. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:30 PM (#5886181)
What the hell are you guys whining about, they are using their closing in a tie game! WE'VE WON
   75. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:32 PM (#5886182)
The Braves have Tomlin and Newcomb left in the pen.

Right, but Newcomb is getting one or more starts in this series, right?
   76. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:33 PM (#5886183)
What the hell are you guys whining about, they are using their closing in a tie game! WE'VE WON

Isn't that pretty conventional on the road? It's only one extra out.
   77. JJ1986 Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:33 PM (#5886184)
Right, but Newcomb is getting one or more starts in this series, right?
I don't think so. He's a fulltime reliever now.
   78. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:33 PM (#5886185)
Those fans behind the plate who are waving their hands when Martinez pitches should be ejected. That’s just moronic.
   79. JJ1986 Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:34 PM (#5886186)
I would guess Fried is the Game 4 starter if they're up in the series.
   80. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:34 PM (#5886187)
Isn't that pretty conventional on the road?
Ask Buck. Or Ubaldo.
   81. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:35 PM (#5886188)
I don't think so. He's a fulltime reliever now.

Who's their 4th starter then? Keuchel, Foltynewicz, Soroka and ????
   82. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:36 PM (#5886189)
I would guess Fried is the Game 4 starter if they're up.

Surprised they used him so early today.
   83. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:37 PM (#5886190)
Was that LARRY??
   84. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:41 PM (#5886192)

oh mama .... i was fully expecting a TOOTBLAN there ...
   85. Howie Menckel Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:42 PM (#5886193)
yes, Fried was and still is scheduled to pitch Game 4 (if necessary)
   86. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:43 PM (#5886196)
So, Atlanta has used so many RPs they're sticking with Melancon despite three hits to four batters.

Managering!
   87. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:44 PM (#5886197)
Seriously, after the walk you don't pull him?
   88. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:44 PM (#5886198)
OK, Ozuna, PLEASE don't flail at ridiculous pitches way off the plate! A walk is a run!
   89. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:45 PM (#5886199)
Boy, this game is something! Melancon couldn't put anyone away, and now... boom!
   90. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:45 PM (#5886200)

ozuna can look so bad at the plate sometimes ...

... and then he shoots a rocket past third.

i didn't even finish typing my first sentence.
   91. cardsfanboy Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:45 PM (#5886201)
oh baby......
   92. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:46 PM (#5886202)
How does Melancon throw anything hittable there? Ozuna was flailing.
   93. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5886203)
That pitch ended up a few inches below the strike zone... nice job by Ozuna going and getting it with 2 strikes.
   94. JJ1986 Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5886204)
Did Paul DeJong have a terrible second half? I remember him having like down-ballot-MVP numbers in the middle of the season and he ended up with a 97 OPS+.
   95. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5886205)
Boy, this game is something! Melancon couldn't put anyone away, and now... boom!

This is all on the Atlanta manager (whoever that is). Melancon was left in way too long b/c he burned his whole pen too early.

Very nice job, but that pitch should have been 8 inches out of the zone.

Postseason baseball is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.
   98. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:48 PM (#5886208)
I've only watched a bit and been listening passively the rest of the time. Accurate to say that the Braves have squandered some real gifts in this one?
   99. phredbird Posted: October 03, 2019 at 08:49 PM (#5886209)

CARDS SCORING RUNS LATE!1!11!!1!!

that is an understatement..atrocious
second half.

edit: maybe an overstatement... but he has been a non-factor since the beginning of June.
