Let’s make a deal? Assessing the Mariners’ likely trade chips as deadline looms | The Seattle Times

So what does the ultra-active Dipoto think of the reduced trading time?

“I think it’s good and we’ve been probably as or more active than anybody in the second period (waiver trades) in the last few years,” he said. “But I think one trade deadline is good. I think in an ideal world it would be a little further back on the calendar. But hopefully having just one trade deadline gives teams around the league a chance to definitively get in or get out.”

Looking at their current roster, the answer appears to be they have almost no trade chits. If they're willing to eat enough money, they can trade Mike Leake to a contender wanting a better 4/5 starter (he's owed 1/$20 with the Cards already on the hook for $4 so another $5-6 M probably gets it done) but 4/5 starters don't bring much return usually. Somebody might want Santana as a DH, might as well try to trade Vogelbach at his peak and Beckham would make a nice bench IF but can't see any money coming back for them either. They don't even have a reliever having a crazy season.

There's Omar Narvaez who seems to have solidified as an above-average C who has 3 years of control left. So he should bring a nice return, he's also the sort of player they're hoping to develop over the next few years. Offer him around now and this offseason to see what you can get.

Oops there's also Haniger, currently on the IL, also with 3 years control left -- bit of a down year but well above-average player. He'd be a pretty perfect fit for the Cubs although the Cubs have little to trade for him and the Ms should get a better fit elsewhere.

Finally there's Marco Gonzalez who has been an average SP and will have 4 years of control left so pretty much any team would be happy to have him but not to the point of offering up real talent in return.

The guy they need to trade is Dipoto. He has made a reasonably good team bad, and has created a situation where no player in his right mind would want to go to the revolving door that is the Mariners. I can't imagine why ownership would want to trust him with the rebuild.

It's silly to change the opinion of a deal based on three-and-a-half months, but even the Haniger trade, which looked like a big win for DiPo, is now the Ketel Marte trade and looks like a big loss. On the other hand, Luiz Gohara is missing the whole season.
