Lidge suffers 10th blown save of the season

Rev. Heidnik’s hole is empty…for now.

Brett Myers made his long-awaited return to the Phillies by pitching in a high-stress, pressure-filled eighth inning Saturday night. Then, Brad Lidge turned up the heat on a possible closer controversy.

Lidge, who seemingly had put his struggles behind him with six strong outings in his last seven games, blew his league-leading 10th save in the ninth inning by loading the bases and allowing a two-out, two-run single to Kazuo Matsui in the Houston Astros’ 5-4 victory over the Phillies at Minute Maid Park.

...Lidge has blown 10 of 38 save chances and has a 7.15 ERA.

Meanwhile, Myers waits in the wings.

Its the Dodgers. Its the Phillies. Its Brad Lidge trying to hold a lead.

Lidge has been impressively bad this year after being so good last year.

I like how the headline claims Lidge suffered the blown save. Wouldn't it be more concise and more correct just to say he blew the save.

Brad Lidge's suffering is one of the least important concerns at the moment.

Is Brad Lidge hurt, or just ineffective?

Tripon, Lidge always talks about how he's feeling great, so it has to be the latter unless he's outright lying.

Lidge has one of the most up-and-down career paths of any player I can think of. One year he's great, then he's only good, then he sucks, then he's great, then he sucks...

turned up the heat on a possible closer controversy.

I don't know how it could even be a controversy at this point, must less a "possible controversy".

Lidge sucks. Someone else needs to close. Lidge needs to pitch garbage time and see if he can fix himself. If not, he shouldn't even be on the postseason roster, at this point.

How's the rest of the Phillies bullpen, or do Lee, and Hamels have to pitch all 5 CG games?

How many leads must our closer blow
Before it is time for a change
Our closer, my friend
Is blowin' every win
Our closer is blowin' every win

I'd say the rest of the bullpen is adequate. Madson has mostly done well, except when place in the closers role. Chan Ho has been stellar. Durbin, Eyre, have been mostly good. I think I speak for all of Philly fans when saying I'm hopeful that Myers gets a chance to save and converts his first couple chances.
