Life after Vlad: Former No. 1 pick tosses no-hitter to enter top prospect conversation

With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finally in the majors where he belongs, it will soon be time to crown a new No. 1 prospect.

There are no shortage of possibilities for that title, though plenty of players who were top prospects entering this season have already joined Guerrero in the majors. That includes Baseball America’s No. 2 and 3 prospects in San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez. Four more members of the top 10 are also expected to debut this year.

So where does that leave us in the top prospect race? Well, we could start with one former top pick who has dominated the competition to a comical degree so far this season. And it got even better on Monday.

Riffing on the subject of prospects, using Casey Mize as a jumping-off point.

Mize has been crazy good coming through the minors. When is his Tommy John scheduled for? (No insider knowledge here; just planning for the inevitable).

CASEY MIZE??? C'mon, you can't fool me. That's a made up baseball name.

Australia is a tough spot to judge MLB buzz from but it seems to me we should be much more excieted about FTj than what I'm seeing. The kid is hitting 300/360/550 with 6 HR, +4 Rfield and speed (6 for 8 in SB). He's at 1.6 WAR already.

Any idea if Casey Mize is descended from or related to Johnny Mize?

Yeah, and you jinxed him.

I suppose San Diego is the closest MLB team to Australia but I'm not sure my jinxing powers are at a Trans-Pacific level.

He doesn't look like he's related to Andres Galarraga...

AJ Preller turned James Shields into Tatis in June of 2016. In that same month, he turned Fernando Rodney into Chris Paddack. That is some quality GM'ing.
