Lindbergh - The Opener’s Opening Act

Before Kevin Cash and the Rays made headlines for their starting rotation experimentations, Tony La Russa and the 1993 A’s implemented a pioneering plan to limit their starters’ exposure. Their tinkering came too soon to set a trend, but with hindsight, it’s proving prophetic.

Is there a better baseball sports-themed podcast than Effectively Wild? The ride between NY and DC is so much more bearable whenever I download the latest episode.

Lindbergh and Sullivan are the best of the best and their guests are always just as good.

Hmm. I guess I'll have to read this article, then.

This. Such an entertaining listen each time. Sometimes I get a little tired of the "What if the pitcher was 97 ft tall" scenarios, but overall it's consistently the best podcast in my feed.

Riaise your hand if you expected that the pitching platoons on the 1993 A’s involved Goose Gossage.

I like the point that because Bob Welch was buying in, nobody else had an excuse to not buy in.

The Rays are doing it the easy way with nothing but rookies who are just happy to be in the majors and will do whatever they tell them to. It's kind of a model where Blake Snell is a "real starter" and they are hoping to be promoted to real starter some day. If none of them get "promoted" and it's openers forever, there will be some friction. One guy who was a starter for a few months, then came back from the DL to find he was now coming in after an opener, already sounded unhappy about it in an interview. (Faria?)
