Stanton HR #300. Probably not his last.

You have to love a guy who fields and runs like Billy Hamilton, but also posts a 110+ ops+.... 1-0 on a Harrison Bader homerun.

Gant with a homerun, back to back the 8th and 9th hitters of the Cardinals are providing the offense.

Great, Porcello sh*ts the bed already, Carmine hose down 2-0 to pale hose.

ugh, waino in the booth helping dan and the other guy give shildt a handjob.

i get it, he's doing well ... but come on ...

Now the Porcello mess is so bad you can't even just change the sheets, the entire mattress needs to be binned. Carmine hose down 3-0, still in the first.

I will now stop with the cr*pping the bed references...

I was fine with Waino giving the handjob, he actually is talking from experience, and unlike McLaughlin, he seemed to also genuinely liked Matheny, so you don't get that underlying 'hatred/jealousy' that you can sense with Mclaughlin when he talks about Matheny. Mclaughlin channels the worst of the internet trolls when he talks about Shildt and Matheny (Redbird Rants and viva the cardinals or whatever that putz's website is called, idiots with an unwielding hatred of everything Matheny/Mozeliak based)

The best part of Wainwright comments, was the compliment from McGee about Shildt (according to waino, McGee said that Shildt is the best manager he has ever seen) and Waino's tribute to Kissell and the continuing of the line from him to Shildt.
   17. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5736662)
At last. 3 runs, 4 hits and a BB later..Porcello "escapes" the inning. Well done Rick!

However in true Porcello form, he'll most likely settle, give up 1 more run, pitch 5 1/3 more innings and hopefully the Red Sox can score some runs.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:41 PM (#5736664)

   19. phredbird Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:44 PM (#5736666)

actually, i agree with your assessment, it was a diplomatic and measured set of comments from waino, and he showed class by not throwing mike under the bus. i didn't mean to make it sound like i was bashing waino. i'm just irritated with dan's continuing obsession with exalting shildt and using wainwright to advance that stupid agenda.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:46 PM (#5736668)
Funny, when the "Hicks/Norris" brouha came up, it was used by these announcers to imply that Matheny has lost the dugout.... now they have literally spent the entire inning talking about how this was a non-story that made no sense why it blew up like it did.

I was well past that pretty much the second week Shildt was on the job. It makes it hard to like the guy, when you have a propaganda machine extolling his virtues.... usually only despots need that type of support.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:51 PM (#5736672)
Jose Martinez, professional hitter, with a two run single(scoring the speedy Molina from second) ups his average to .311.

That seems like a really dumb stat.. "Martinez with his team leading 18th multi-rbi game of the season."
   24. phredbird Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:52 PM (#5736673)
huh, martinez thrown out at second on a hit that scores two runs, and one of those runs was yadi scoring from second. i was surprised that pirate LF didn't throw home, but apparently molina was running really hard and the hit was a high bouncer over 3B so i guess it took a while to get to the fielder. 5-0 cards.
   25. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5736675)
OK, bad Porcello is here to stay today. Another run in the 2nd, saved by the JBJ double play from giving up more.
   26. Jay Seaver Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5736676)
Ugh. On top of everything else, Nunez just screwed up a beautiful Jackie Bradley throw (or at least, that's what the review should say).

woops! o'neil almost let that one go over his head. it kinda carried on him.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: August 30, 2018 at 08:59 PM (#5736679)
(I decided to look at the NL leaders in average because of my post in 23)

By bb-ref, leading the NL in average is
Yelich with a .319---0 for 4 day drops his average to .316
2nd is Gennet and he went 0 for 1 to drop it to .313
3rd is Zobrist, the Cubs are still playing right now, but has gone for 2 for 2 to up his average to a NL league leading(tie?) .316
4th is Markakis 0 for 2, down to .309
5th is Freeman 1 for 2 for a .311.
Cain 2 for 4 to up his average to .311
Then you have Martinez who has moved his average up to .311.

That is a real tight grouping this late in the season... and yes I know that average isn't really that telling of a stat, but it's what many of us grew up with as having importance so I still have a sentimental attachment to that stat.

well that's what i mean. shildt looks like he's very intense but low key like most cardinal managers and i like that ... those idiots in the booth are harshing my buzz!

Martinez is a bit of a lumber runner, plus he came off the bag when he slid so it took what might have been a close play into an easy out.
   31. phredbird Posted: August 30, 2018 at 09:04 PM (#5736683)

me too, it's a holdover from becoming a fan so long ago. it's bumming me out a little that pujols will almost certainly finish below .300, especially after keeping his avg. up around .320 for 11 yrs in stl.
   32. phredbird Posted: August 30, 2018 at 09:08 PM (#5736684)
good play all around on that last out. munoz throwing from his knees does the one bounce throw, and adams knows it will get there in time so he doesn't need to stretch, so he carefully takes the throw with two hands in a crouch.
   33. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 30, 2018 at 09:09 PM (#5736685)
Mike Montgomery isn't really cut out to be a starting pitcher, is he?

I always feel a bit weird praising Adams defense, he's a 'big' guy and you have all the preconceptions about fielding that you do towards a big guy, but he is actually average to plus defender(as he has aged that has moved more towards average) so sometimes I feel that I'm over praising his defense because I'm thinking "good play for a fat man." instead of thinking "good play for a player." but the numbers bear it out(as long as he isn't in the outfield) that he's a pretty good fielder whether he's fat or just a player.
   35. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 30, 2018 at 09:14 PM (#5736689)
Kintzler, meanwhile, isn't really cut out to be a pitcher.

so in 2 innings Porcello has given up 7 hits and 2BB, he ain't fooling anyone out there today.

I don't understand this. He has a 3.08 era as a SP this year, and he wasn't that terrible in his first game off the DL.

You know what, you're right. I think it just seems like he doesn't go very deep into games, but I guess you cannot ask for a lot more than 5 or 6 innings from a guy who's been mostly a relief arm.

Kintzler still sucks and I will fight to the death on that claim.
   41. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 30, 2018 at 09:28 PM (#5736697)
That was hit hard, but Chavez has been unreal since the Cubs got him.

He's averaging 5 2/3 per start. That isn't far off from the other Cubs sp this year, and they've ramped him up since he moved to the rotation. He's actually one of the more efficient of the SP this year too. I've come around to him in that role.
   43. phredbird Posted: August 30, 2018 at 09:31 PM (#5736699)

OK, so Porcello has settled as expected. He should get through 6 with no more runs(hopefully). Now of course the lineup is getting no-hit so there is that issue..

Stanton's 300th home run ball will be in his locker after the game, thanks to Eddie Fastook of Yankees' security. Tim Kunz caught the ball. He traded it in for a meet and greet w/ Stanton, autographed baseballs, tickets to future game, a clubhouse/field tour and 2 Bud Lights

...........

I like this. the fan is not trying to be a jerk, and the comps offered cost the Yankees not even a rounding error. fan will have memories and photos for a lifetime.

Hear #Yankees are working to try to finalize deal with #sfgiants for McCutchen. Not done yet. Abital Avelino would be part of return for SF.

(this would add to the growing narrative that Judge is out for the season)

Yankees apparently close to getting McCutchen. He can still get on base, but unfortunately can't pitch. And that's what the Yankees really need.

McCutchen to #Yankees almost certain to happen, just a matter of deciding on second prospect to #Giants. Would be a significant pickup for #Yankees lineup that needs a spark.

(McCutchen an iconic figure in PIT and popular in SF. tough to see him in NYY pinstripes. Captain America joins the Evil Empire.)

OK, but I thought NY really needed pitching?

Don't they have Stanton, Gardner and Hicks to man the OF already? And a few scrubs off the bench? Is this a big improvement for them? I'm not trolling, would genuinely like to hear from NY fans about this one.

Stanton is probably going to see a lot of time at DH with his hamstring. Cutch is insurance until Judge comes back, or possibly can't come back. He can still get on base plenty, but obviously can't make up for the power. Sanchez coming back Saturday should help with that.

   68. Howie Menckel Posted: August 31, 2018 at 12:56 AM (#5736773)
good question, 66. I think it means they can't count on a Judge return.

also, an old Gardner has hit under .200 in August and smells like toast. Hicks also has slipped.

an old Neil Walker and Shane Robinson as OF extras is pitiful. they were woefully short in OF - and may still be. also, it's a listless Yankees team. Cutch is a ray of sunshine to a cloudy dugout.

Wil Myers makes his third error of the night in the 12th, immediately after grounding into a double play with runners on first and second to end the 11th. I'm guessing he doesn't stick at third.

Back from the last home game of the local AAA team for the season- John Polonius struck out twice, then made the terrible mistake of trying to hide behind a tapestry.

A sign of how AAA differs from MLB- I doubt that the front office of any MLB teams will go to the main entrance at the end of the last game of the year to applaud the fans as they leave.....
