LoHud Yankee Blog: Breaking news - Beckett to miss next start

Ignore most of the comments, but here’s the news from Pete Abe.

Josh Beckett will not start for Boston tomorrow. He is instead being sent to see Dr. James Andrews.

Dr. Andrews has quite a rep here, but the last two big names (Glavine & Joba) sent to see him came back with relatively good news.

Games/Playoff series have been won with far worse rotations than this. If Beckett is lost for the season it's bad--really bad--but such a situation is not nearly as dire as, say, if we had lost Martinez for the whole postseason in 1999. The rest of the rotation is certainly prone to implosion, but this year Beckett was too... Not good news, but not news to jump off a bridge about.

Now if you tell me Lester's done for the year... now that would have me throw up my hands and shake my fists at the baseball gods.

Does this mean the AL Wild Card comes out of the Central now? Angels, Chisox, and Rays for the divisions, and the Twinks for the Wild Card?

Terrible, terrible news. Dr Death is not the man you want your ace to be seeing as September rolls around.

That proposed Becket-less rotation is OK, but none of those guys go real deep into games. The bullpen would be exposed and overworked. That's no way to win in the postseason, assuming they can even get there at this point with Beckett out.

Way to ruin the buzz of a damn good 6-3 road trip. David Pauley, come on down! UGH.

I don't think this means that much to the Red Sox chances of making the playoffs. Beckett has been OK this season but only has a 4.34 ERA on the season and the Red Sox still lead the Wild Card. It's not like Beckett has been carrying Boston.

If he's out, I don't think the Sox can win it all though.

Pete Sheppard on WEEI thinks it is good news because the Red Sox are being careful with Beckett. That's what a CSB degree gets you.

There was a big article on WEEI.com (by Rob Bradford) about how Beckett consults Andrews any time he has any arm/elbow issues. I don't see this as a reason for alarm. I'm more concerned about the fact that everyone seemed to think he was all better 1 day ago.

Teammates were cautious in their reaction to the news of Beckett’s impending visit to Andrews, although catcher Jason Varitek indirectly raised the possibility that Beckett will not pitch again this season.

“We’ll wait and see,” said third baseman Mike Lowell, who came to Boston with Beckett in a 2005 trade from the Florida Marlins. “Obviously, I would rather he was going home on the charter with us.”

Said Varitek: “We’ve kind of been without him for a little while, so we’ve had time to absorb it. We’ve got to go out and try to find a way to get outs. If he’s able to pitch for us, I guess that’s an extra bonus for us.”

How about we keep all the teams that soak up revenue from other clubs, don't spend it on their players, and draw 10,000 fans a night out of the playoffs? That sounds like a better plan to me.

I believe the Large Hadron Collider is scheduled to be run full-tilt for the first time on about the same day that the World Series began last year... so draw your own conclusions.

In 2003 (or possibly "2003"), I managed the 2003 Cubs into the World Series against the Red Sox in Diamond Mind.

The series went 7 games.

Game 7 was tight all the way. The Sox scored 2 in the top of the 9th. The Cubs came back to tie it, on a 2-out, 2-run HR by somebody like Troy O'Leary. The Sox pushed across a run in the 10th, the Cubs tied. A few scoreless innings followed. At this point, I'm assuming DM has a bit of code in the program which keeps either of these teams from winning the WS and my computer is going to blow up and end the world.

The Sox scored 2 in the 14th. Surely this it.

The Cubs scored 3 to take the 2003 World Series.

Happiest day of my virtual baseball life. :-)

he always has nagging injuries either that cost him to miss an occassional start or be used to explain his relative 'averageness' as a pitcher. I mean he's had one very good season in 5 years, yet people act like he's a bonafide ace. When you tell Kevin or other Red Sox fans that they say "well he had this issue, that season, this issue the other season" etc. and it boils down to when he is 100% healthy he is Beckett 2007, all the other times he's been injured so we can't judge him based upon those results.

Two entirely different things. kevin thinks Ellsbury is as good as Sizemore. Red Sox fans hope he can be Kenny Lofton. kevin thinks Pedroia is better the Joe Morgan. Red Sox fans think he is pretty good.
