LoHud: Yanks manager Girardi aids crash victim in Westchester on way home from Series clincher

Police were in the area conducting a driving while intoxicated checkpoint on the parkway. In fact, about 15 minutes earlier, Girardi had passed through a driving while intoxicated checkpoint on the parkway. Cristiano, who was working the checkpoint, congratulated him on his first win as a manager and waved him through. He hadn’t been the only Yankees member to pass by the checkpoint. Pitcher Andy Pettitte also passed through earlier.

Yeah, no reason to think those guys would be intoxicated last night.

Note to Officer Cristiano: none of us here back at headquarters expected you to actually give Pettitte and Girardi field sobriety tests last night, but you may want to play down just how happy you were to see them and just how quickly you waved them through a DUI checkpoint less than two hours after they were seen on national television almost literally drowning in booze.

Thanks,

Your shift commander

If Nomar Garciaparra had been there, he would have jumped into any nearby body of water and rescued several women before rendering assistance.

Sounds like NYYFan...

Yet another case of Girardi over-managing. In fact he put his own life at risk by running across 6 lanes of traffic to "aid" an unhurt woman. When you evaluate the entire situation in context it's clear he made a bad move.

He talked the hospital into reducing her bed-rest from 4 to 3 days.

The Yankees celebrated with Armand de Brignac Champagne, which is very very expensive champagne that is extremely new for the French wine business and looks like it was created and marketed for the young wealthy urban market. I wouldn't be shocked at all to find out that the Yankees got it for free or at a steep discount.
   14. jwb Posted: November 05, 2009 at 06:26 PM (#3379682)
Yep. A low-leverage situation like that would have been an ideal time to get Phil Coke some work.

I wouldn't be shocked by that, but I'd be equally unshocked to see that they paid full price.

I would be shocked if Bud Selig claimed 40% of the champagne for himself in luxury tax.

Why yes, Jeffrey Loria would loves a bottle of Armand de Brignac.

I don't think I would ever buy a bottle of Armand de Brignac. It is so over the top ostentatious that it reminds of those over the top things from Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Gold plated cars and such.

Another thing I will never buy is anything with Donald Trump's name on it.

Do we actually know who drinks at these things? It's possible neither Pettitte (who, as a pretty devout Christian, may not drink) and Girardi (who, as a Catholic, probably does) actually consumed a meaningful amount of the champagne being poured.

But I agree that MLB or the Yankees should make transportation easily available in such situations.

So, we have not only a stereotype, but also a mistaken understanding of the definition of "Christian" and its relationship to the concept of " Catholic"......

Oh lighten up will. It was shorthand, hoping that no one would get worked up over the details. I should have known that was a terrible assumption.

I think Andy's an Evangelical Christian, and they have a greater tendency to abstain from alcohol, as far as I can tell from my experiences with their congregations and events. Girardi's Catholic (as am I, which means all of us are Christians), and we have a far greater acceptance of alcohol as part of the social fabric (at least in the half-dozen parishes I've belonged to). Hell, my kids' school has a bar attached to the gymnasium, which I'm not sure you're going to find in many Morningside Christian Schools. Your experiences may differ, but I'd be surprised.

Considering the huge swath of BTF that is legitimately anti-religious, please direct your ire that way next time.
   33. esseff Posted: November 05, 2009 at 08:13 PM (#3379859)
A lot of the Yankees appeared to have wives, gf's and other family on the field after the game, and they don't participate in the clubhouse alcohol bath, so there are drivers available . . . although there's also a strong possibility that not all the new world champions went home with their families after leaving the ballpark.

I'm guessing Nick Swisher turns up hungover, partially (and inexplicably) sunburnt, wearing a tattered chicken suit, with one of the little flags from the WS trophy broken off in his ear someplace in New Jersey, oh, a week from tomorrow.

Dude's from West Virginia and went to Ohio State. That's just how we do.

Jeez, can't the Yankees leave anyone in peace? First she finds out the Yankees won, so her (completely understandable) first reaction is to attempt suicide. Girardi can't even give her the respect of honoring her final wish. What a bunch of ########.
