Long-Term Battery Combiniations

As of the end of the 2017 season 132 battery combinations had logged at least 3000 outs (1000 innings) since the establishment of the modern pitching distance of 60 feet 6 inches…...

Nine pitchers are listed twice:
Steve Carlton (Bob Boone, Tim McCarver), Hooks Dauss (Oscar Stanage, Johnny Bassler), Whitey Ford (Yogi Berra, Elston Howard), Bob Gibson (Tim McCarver, Ted Simmons), Carl Hubbell (Gus Mancuso, Harry Danning – whose careers were nearly coincident), Walter Johnson (Eddie Ainsmith, Muddy Ruel), Christy Mathewson (Frank Bowerman, Chief Meyers), Mike Mussina (Chris Hoiles, Dan Wilson), and Cy Young (Chief Zimmer, Lou Criger).

See where your favorites stand, and also see some surprises.

When I think legendary battery mates, my mind always turns to RA Dickey and Josh Thole.

TFA forgot Al Kaline.

I was surprised to see a Mariner on this list, but not so surprised to see it was Moyer. He recorded 3713 outs with Wilson over 10 seasons. By contrast, Glavine and Lopez went for 4957 in just 9 seasons, for an average of 550.8. On the flip side I found Mike Flanagan/Rick Dempsey, who managed 4241 outs over 17 seasons (249.5 per).

Yeah, yeah, Cy Young, I know, I know (7551/12 = 629.25) - but I think Dazzy Vance wins, with 6055/9 = 672.8.

Is that a typo in the intro for Mussina. He certainly never threw 1000 innings to Dan Wilson.

Clearly you were not part of the great Dickey-Thole debate! Actually I'm surprised Thole lasted that long as his PC. Looks like he just missed on 6 full years service time.

I'm surprised the Fergie-Hundley pairing leads the Fergie-Sundberg pairing by "only" about 600 IP.

My favorite pairing will always be Nomo to Piazza. Always lots of action on the basepaths during those games.

Yes, good catch. Should be Jorge Posada.

Mike Witt and Bob Boone is the only Angel pairing on the list unless I'm missing something.

The Angels have seemingly alternated 8-year stretches of having a consistent catcher and having consistent pitchers. Buck Rodgers was around for most of the 60's, but pitchers came and went. Then you had the 70's with Ryan and Tanana, but a new catcher every other year. Boone stabilized things behind the plate in the 80's, but Witt was the only consistent pitcher for most of the decade. By the time Chuck Finley, Jim Abbott, and Mark Langston showed up, they were back to the rotating door behind the plate (such household catching names as Greg Myers, Ron Tingley, and Jorge Fabregas). Again they stabilized the catching for a while with Bengie Molina, and I imagine he and Lackey got pretty close, but Molina didn't quite last long enough. Lackey and Weaver were here for a long time, but after Molina, they platooned Mathis and Napoli for a while, and it's been a few years on the job for a couple guys (Iannetta and Maldonado) since then.

Maldonado has been great defensively behind the dish in the two seasons he's been here, but I get the feeling that his bat is going to go downhill pretty quickly in the not-too-distant future, and if the glove slips at all he'll be unplayable. Plus the Angels can't keep a starting pitcher with his UCL attached for longer than two seasons, so it really doesn't matter how long Maldonado stays. In other words, I don't foresee the Angels adding another pair to this list any time soon.
