The highlights suggest it was a good game.

I stayed up and watched the game, and got to see Manny Machado prove he was just as good at playing third base as Brooks Robinson ever was.

Amazing play. Stunning play. Holy cow, what a play.

Oh, and that was Miggy Cabrera he was robbing of extra bases there, not some scrub.

That makes the play *less* impressive, not more. Machado's throw was offline and a faster runner would have made it to first base safely.

The throw wasn't as accurate as Brooks but Manny went farther to get the ball. And they were both helped by very slow runners. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_XHZbhR9qc

He is pretty great, though. He'd make a fine shortstop but it seems like he's unusually well suited to 3B, so I don't think I want to see him move back to the middle.

Brooks' play was better. The ball looks to be fielded in exactly the same place for each, and Brooks' throw is obviously accurate, but the other major thing is that Brooks' release is extraordinarily fast. May must have got down the line much faster than Cabrera did. Still a great play though, it's not like it's easy to match one of the most famous defensive highlights of all time.

I don't think any one play can do that. Brooks was, by all accounts, the greatest defensive 3b in history.

I'm old enough that I watched Brooks play, and I think Machado is right up there on the impossible plays.

So you skipped the class on batter exit velocity? Okay.

Until Matt Chapman gets called up.

Ryan Zimmerman was really something to watch for a few years, but he lost it so quickly. I liked watching him because he wasn't much of an athlete, but he would make throws like the one Brooks Robinson does in the linked highlight, just preternaturally smooth and fast.

Machado (and Arenado, for that matter) is an incredible defender and I agree that he should be in the same conversation with Brooks Robinson.

OTOH, it's a total oversell to claim that the play last night was Brooks-quality. The throw was offline and required Santana to make an excellent short-hop grab, then dive to the bag just ahead of Cabrera.

As Ray likes to say, "Good, not great."

Loonnnnggg game, 4:05 long. Machado had another really nice play on a bunt - barehanded, strong throw.

Petco was not very crowded. It reminded me of my days in KC during the Boone/Muser era. The crowd did get noisy, seemed to be equally noisy for both sides.

I'm at the street fair at Petco and in 20 minutes, not a soul has bought anything at the Taste of Canada booth. Poutine or Baked Beans with Bacon and Syrup is just not grabbing this crowd.
