Longoria could miss 6-8 weeks with injury

Harsh times…

Rays All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria could be out 6-8 weeks with a hamstring injury, according to a tweet from the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin.

Longoria left last night’s game in the third inning after he appeared to get hurt on a slide. He was replaced by Elliot Johnson, who wound up getting the game-winning hit. It was Johnson’s only game at third this season, and he is the only Ray to play there this season besides Longoria.

Topkin tweets the Rays are still sorting through third base options.

His missing 6-8 weeks would be a surprise considering manager Joe Maddon described him as day-to-day Monday night. Maddon labeled the injury as knee soreness at the time.

Give 'em an Inge and they'll take a Milone.

From Roger Mooney

Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman did not want to speculate on 3B Evan Longoria’s left hamstring/knee injury until team doctors exam Longoria this afternoon.

Friedman said Longoria has not yet gone for an MRI.

“We’ll see how he feels today and go from there,” Friedman said.

.....

Longoria will not play tonight and Friedman said he is not sure when the three-time All-Star will return or if he will end up on the disabled list.

So maybe serious maybe not so serious

Not if they can't beat the Yankees at least once they won't.

For the record:

- Zobrist has played all of 4 games at 3B in the majors
- Keppinger has played over 100 games at 3B in his career, though none in the last 2-3 years
- as noted in [3], Jorge Cantu was just released by the Dodgers & is available for all your throwing error needs

Ryan Zimmerman smirks in your general direction from the disabled list. He can throw wildly across the diamond with the best of 'em.

Longoria grabbed the backside of his knee joint as he torqued into 2B last night. The TV commentator speculated that he heard his knee "pop" and that is never a good thing nor does it heal quickly. I hope it's not bad, the Rays really Longo to go long-o.

Well, maybe not Ryan Braun long-o, but enough pop to keep them in the thick of the AL East.

My knees pop every time I squat down, so that in and of itself isn't a big deal. This still sucks. I am a Jays fan and I should hate the Rays, but I just can't seem to do that. I do know that I would trade Jose Bautista or Brandon Morrow or Ricky Romero straight up for Joe Maddon.

Too bad Brandon Inge was just scooped up. He might have been a decentish fill-in.

The Royals have Kevin Kouzmanoff stashed away in AAA and he has an opt-out he must decide on today.

And the Indians just let Jose Lopez go today, not that he's an answer for anything but "what player did Dave Cameron propose trading for John Danks in a stupid trade proposal?"

Really bad break for Tampa. Longoria's starting to get inury prone-ish.

Still makes me smile every time.

Can anyone speak to how good / bad Keppinger was at 3B? I'd think (assuming they won't be w/out Longoria for more than the 6-8 weeks), they simply move him to 3B, put Zobrist at 2B, and field Jennings / Upton / Joyce in the OF. It's not ideal, but given the options, it might be the best move.

Semi-related: Zobrist's slash-line right now is .205 / .364 / .423. That's three more walks (19) than hits so far.

It sure seems like a lot of very good third basemen are injury prone.

That's one of the reasons I take great comfort in having Edwin Encarnacion on the Jays roster. The Jays don't need him to make throwing errors from 3B every day. But it's nice to have that option should you so choose.

Partial tear, out 4-8 weeks. Hurts obviously but the Rays have always done a good job of filling in for injuries and even if they just get replacement level production out of the position until Longoria is back it would only be about a two win drop if he misses the full two months.

It really wouldn't surprise me if the Rays actually got decent 3B production out of some scrapheap pickup while Longoria is out. Solid organizations always seem to find a guy.
