stat(s) of the day: The Mariners awful error-proneness

The Mariners have made 63 errors. The MLB average is 32. They are 3.4 standard deviations worse than average (!); that is, only 1 team in 1500 should be that far off. If you use per-game instead of total, it is merely 3.2 std devs :)

The biggest culprits are Beckham at SS (12 miscues), Healy at 3B (9 miscues), and ohmygosh, if you list the leaders in the OF in all of MLB, the table would show

lots of guys with 1
lots of guys with 2
lots of guys with 3
and Domingo Santana with 9!!

Wieters gets back-to-back starts, homers in back-to-back games.

He's now surpassed Yadier Molina in 2019 WAR, despite playing 60 innings to Molina's 419.

Big series for the Red Sox, sitting 7.5 games back with 4 games @ Yankee Stadium. Boston seems unaware that the lesson of 2019 is the incredible team-building & bonding that comes from overcoming injuries. The Red Sox’s only chance is to put Mookie Betts & J. D. Martinez on the Injury List before tonight’s game, then adding Chris Sale in the 2nd inning. Hopefully, nobody will tell them.

Given that Domingo German is starting to look like Domingo German instead of a top 5 Cy Young candidate, and two Yankees starters are currently slated as TBD, I think they'd be thrilled to spilit this series with Boston.

I don't understand the PA and AB columns in the #8 data.
   12. salvomania Posted: May 30, 2019 at 02:36 PM (#5846859)
The fact that a pitcher was able to have a 10-pitch AB against Hudson says more about Hudson's stuff than it does about the .130-career-hitter Eickhoff's abilities as a hitter.

My guess is that it is PA and AB in the games in which the player hit a home run.

Speaking to that point...

Twelve trades that shaped the 2019 Yankees roster

Here's a look at 12 pivotal trades Cashman has made that helped construct the current 40-man roster and the Yankees' resulting on-field success in early 2019.

DIDI GREGORIUS

DOMINGO GERMAN

AARON HICKS

CHAD GREEN AND LUIS CESSA

GLEYBER TORRES

CLINT FRAZIER AND BEN HELLER

TOMMY KAHNLE

ZACK BRITTON

J. A. HAPP

LUKE VOIT

GIO URSHELA

JAMES PAXTON

The article details the players the Yankees gave up to get the ones of the above list, and what they've done since they left. The Yanks may still have the bankroll, but this ain't George Steinbrenner's M.O.

   15. salvomania Posted: May 30, 2019 at 03:16 PM (#5846872)
and what they've done since they left.

Well, it doesn't really say what they've done so much as where they are/what their role is:
"Gallegos is currently pitching in the Cardinals bullpen"

For the record, Gallegos has been decent for the Cardinals this year, with a sub-1.00 WHIP and 14K/9 (36K in 23 ip) in 20 appearances.

JD Hammer in to pitch for the Phillies, and yes, he is wearing baggie pants.
   17. salvomania Posted: May 30, 2019 at 03:19 PM (#5846874)
This Hammer kid looks like an actual kid, one who's wearing grown-up's glasses in an attempt to appear older.

   18. Rob_Wood Posted: May 30, 2019 at 03:28 PM (#5846882)
If anybody here is a LeBatard show fan, they'll instantly recognize Hammer.
   19. salvomania Posted: May 30, 2019 at 03:45 PM (#5846894)
Gant throws an even better pitch than his called strike two, and it's called... ball three.

Tough spot for the Birds clinging to a lead, an out would be huge here with the tying runs on and only one out...

EDIT: And Gant gets Kingery swinging for the second out. One more to go. (And then one more inning). I'm looking forward to seeing how Hicks responds after his recent meltdown (zero outs, three runs allowed); I would be more relaxed if he'd thrown more than four(!) innings this month. Schildt should make sure he gets regular work even if the save situations aren't available.

Great catch by Fowler to end Phils-Cards. It looks like the fan barely ticked it but Fowler hung on. Am I to understand tha a ball hitting a fan is still catchable? I believe the fan did not reach over the rail.
   24. salvomania Posted: May 30, 2019 at 04:14 PM (#5846912)
Fowler leaps into the stands to catch the foul ball to end the game.

Nice low-stress outing by Hicks. Cardinals win for the 8th time in May. (All their seven previous wins this month were followed by a loss; six of the seven were followed by two or more losses; four of the seven were followed by at least three losses).
   25. Davo (Love Won The Battle Of Stalingrad) Posted: May 30, 2019 at 05:01 PM (#5846929)
If the Cardinals lose tomorrow, they will have gone through the entire month of May without ever winning consecutive games.

This will be the first time they’ve done that in a month since like I don’t know I think they said 1903.

They’ve solved this by declaring a rainout already, despite the forecast suggesting there would be a chance to get it in, albeit after a delayed start.

Weather Channel app says rain certain at game time and > 60% in the Bronx until 10:00 PM, with chance of more thunderstorms thereafter. Postponement seems prudent.

Injury updates:
Coley Harvey, ESPN Staff Writer

There's a chance Didi Gregorius returns to the lineup on the road trip to Toronto and Cleveland next week, Aaron Boone says. That would fall in line with the six-day plan Triple-A manager Jay Bell mentioned in Scranton a couple days ago. Gregorius' rehab stint just resumed in Scranton this week. Boone also said that Giancarlo Stanton hit in the batting cage and ran sprints in Tampa yesterday and today. He will start ramping up to live batting practice soon.

Today in Aaron Judge watch: the outfielder gets in some outfield work, taking some fly balls and grounders, and throwing to second, third and home.

The incompetence of the Yankee Stadium ground crew when dumping water after the rain stops would be a more creative justification.

I looked for a ballgame on ESPN and got a spelling bee.

interesting that the kids have similar quirks to ballplayers, although the lack of action makes it utterly unwatchable.I mean, if each kid got a word and a definition, and they offered a spelling, alrighty.

instead, seems like EVERY kid asks for the word to be repeated, use it in a sentence, etymology, repeat all this stuff again, etc.

I picture Mike "Human Rain Delay" Hargrove and Steve "Another Toss to First Base" Trachsel enjoying this immensely.

the only hope is a disrupter like this Jeopardy dude. yeah, for 40 years most people have gone "Potent Potables" for $200, $400, and up the ladder. he ignores all convention and has made hundreds of thousands of extra dollars by racking up larger tallies before he wins his Daily Doubles.

it would be badass to see a spelling bee kid just hear the word and immediately spell it - then drop the mic and sit down. maybe they could even celebrate by staring at the other kids.
   33. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 30, 2019 at 08:49 PM (#5846963)
Well, the Bronx is under a Flood Advisory, so it looks like they couldn’t play.

Twins @ Rays is a poor substitute for Red Sox @ Yankees, and the Twins aren’t making much of an effort, 11-1 Rays. Looking like the Rays may be in the race all season.

Yeah, the mic drop would be killer, no doubt.

I reckon they should either allow heckling or trash talking. Maybe along the lines of..."hey Vijay, I could spell quintessentially by the time I was 2, suck on that bro!"

Red Sox fan says....wild card, here we come! With the Rays doing Rays things and NY with their no-name pixie dust squad doing well, the Sox and their hoping for 90 win season are eyeing off the 2nd WC slot(assuming the A's don't do crazy A's things all year long...)

huh, did not realize til now that the Mets' Pete Alonso tied the rookie record for HR through May of 19, set by Mark McGwire.

of course, this is a silly HR season so..... oh, wait
