Looking for Bias in Top 100 Prospect Lists | FanGraphs Baseball

What does making Baseball America’s Top 100 list really mean?

Something something something Robbie Ray.

I would not expect Len Bias in any Top 100 Prospect lists.

Jorge Posada wasn’t a high draft pick, as he came out of the 24th round from a junior college in Alabama

I admit, I don't know everything about Posada, but I would not have guessed that in a million years.

I've only skimmed thus far, but its pretty interesting stuff. Sounds like first baseman are the easiest to project, smaller guys tend to be harder to project, workhorses and command is underrated in prospect lists.

Mike Timlin and Tom Underwood both played for Toronto, Baltimore and St. Louis.

Wade Boggs wan't considered much of a prospect. No power or speed and indifferent defensively. Baseball, and the HOF, are full of guys who didn't have enough "tools." We are also starting to see that there are plenty of players with SABR friendly numbers who can't cut it at the ML level. The more tools the scouts have to evaluate the players the tougher it gets.

Very true. "Needs a lot of help with the bat."

It's nice to be reminded that as good as BA is, there's a lot of subjectivity that goes into these rankings.

I particularly liked the "potentially overlooked prospects" section.

I liked this article, it was a nice read, it would need to be further analyzed (as he mentions at the end) to determine if there really is a bias anywhere, but it does seem "old for the league" is a very common mantra dismissing a lot of these players good seasons.

Mike Timlin and Tom Underwood both played for Toronto, Baltimore and St. Louis.

But they also played for other teams. His criteria was Only for the bird teams.

I often find that international free agents are overlooked in prospect lists due to lingering MLB draft hype.

Mike Timlin

Nowhere else to put this, but did anyone catch that this was Llewyn Davis's ex-partner's name in the movie. Were the Cohen Bros. fans?
