Twitter, LOL!
Really not a good look for the M's.
Under the 'high performance czar', they didn't
Martin could just be a disgruntled employee
Possible she's also telling the truth

Scott Servais? Did not know that.
Upper Pacific NW Mangerial news is not my bailiwick!
Course, it's only been 3 years!
Know I, now!
Still...

Allegations are quite serious
She says Dipoto, Servais, and McKay
Suppose we'll have to wait and see!

There goes all of our election conversations for posterity. So for the record I was the greatest predictor of elections. I called every single local and statewide election correctly and missed the actual vote totals by .01%. Everyone was amazed and I won three election night bets. Andy you owe me $100, Mellow Mouse $50 and Clapper owes me $200.

I did pretty well.

Blew the senate..
Lots better in the House
Also missed govs by 2
Meh, still...
Everybody should pay me anyway

Don't welsh on bets
Although, "welsh"?
Not sure that's kosher... or that either!

My wife's company is a CA based company and last year they created a new policy where they reach out and give money to their employees that have been impacted by the California fires. I guess with them becoming more and more common they are becoming a part of life for Californians. I thought it was actually pretty nice of them to start doing that. Of course they had no idea that my wife lost her uncle to the fire when they gave her the money but it will certainly help us get out to California and be with the family in their time of need.

My wife's aunt sent us a picture of her home. She lived in the Chico area and the picture reminds me of the photos from the Dresden bombing. Lots of charred stuff on the ground and all that is standing is a chimney.

It's pretty funny that Martin says the accused said that Latinos can't be catchers or managers because they're dumb, or whatever. Count the ones that are successful. Here in Boston. Molina. Salvy Perez. Etc etc. I mean, that assertion isn't hard to refute, if it were made. Someone was being dumb. It's unclear who to believe, without background.

As for racism, the notion that baseball people are going around making racial comments about hispanics in 2018 is a bit hard to swallow. And her claim that they 'fired' some trainers in the Dominican because of them being anti-Hispanic is ludicrous; whoever these trainers' replacements are will also be hispanic.

EDIT: To be clear, I am sure that some people in baseball in 2018 are racist. There are some racists everywhere. What I find incredible is that baseball people would be saying those things in 2018.

From the article it seems the big flashpoint was that they took part of her job away and gave it to Andy McKay. Andy took over I guess the mental side of whatever it is that she is supposed to do and she objected to that. There was an argument at that point and supposedly that is when a lot of these statements supposedly came out.

In this day and age and in baseball it would be almost anachronistic for someone to hold the views being supposedly had and actually say them out loud. But at the same time I also know that people can be pretty stupid and say and some incredibly stupid things.

Right, and I posted 3 or 4 things at about 4:00 am ET, and I don't think any of them were threadnukeworthy, and nothing I saw before that was, so I was wondering if it was something earlier this morning.

Francesa on Stan Lee:

Mike Francesa on Stan Lee’s death: ‘Oh, who cares?’

By Kyle Schnitzer

November 13, 2018 | 9:10am

Listener: Stan Lee died today, did you ever meet the guy? What did you think of him?

Francesa: Stan Lee?

Listener: Yeah, Stan Lee.

Francesa: I don’t know who he is. I never heard of him, don’t know who he is, no.

Listener: Jesus. [Hangs up.]

Francesa: Who is he? Who is he? Who is Stan Lee?

Producer: He was one of the creators of Marvel Comics.

Francesa: Oh, who cares. I’m not a comic book guy. Is that who he is? Stan Lee?

Guy: He created Spider-Man.

Francesa: Oh, he created Spider-Man? Sorry, I never was a comic book reader as a kid. I apologize. Never.

Lee was 95. He created some of the world’s most renowned superheroes, including Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk.

“For the record, all I said when a caller brought up passing of Stan Lee was: who is he?” Francesa tweeted Tuesday morning. “Not familiar with his work.Never bought a comic, never have like sci-fi or super heroes. Didn’t disrespect his passing.”

He shouldn't have said "Who cares?" but I believe that he didn't know who Lee was because as of 24 hours ago I didn't know who Lee was. Oddly I did have a vague visual of a 95 year old guy with a mustache and sunglasses where someone recently tried to bilk him out of his fortune -- though I could be wrong about even that -- but I couldn't have associated him with Marvel. I suppose if I'd been given a multiple choice test and could rule out the other answers ("Prominent Baseball Executive") I could have hit on Marvel.

I posted something and it didn't show up on the Hot Topics sidebar at around that time. So I figured that something might have happened to the site. Perhaps in Jim's Lab notes or something could be a brief explanation so we know what is up.

Well I would agree with you, were it not for the fact, that in the past 5 years, two owners of US sports franchise have effectively been forced to sell over racist comments. And one GM lost his job over reading racist scouting reports in a meeting. And that is just off the top of my head.

Of course, as Adams says we may be having a failure of imagination here. It's possible Jim didn't nuke the thread, or at least not for reasons we think.

Melania Trump hasn’t reached out to Michelle Obama for advice about being the First Lady.

Obama writes in her newly released memoir that she told Trump to contact her if she ever needed help, but said during a recent interview with ABC News that the current First Lady hasn’t done so.

I wonder why Melania hasn't "reached out" to a woman who has attacked her family.

That said, to an extent this one cuts both ways because Trump has attacked Obama (including with the birtherism nonsense) but while Michelle has attacked Trump, Melania hasn't attacked either of them.

That would be a royal PITA.

But if he asked us to stop talking politics unless specifically related to a baseball issue (or even if specifically related to a baseball issue) I'd honor that. But there's really no way to effect that change site-wide because general politics discussions will happen organically. And if they don't, Andy will be sure to politico-bomb the threads as he used to do before.

I don't think Laura Bush and Michelle Obama knew each other prior to 2008 (or at least, 2004) - but they've worked together and appeared together a fair bit... If memory serves, when Michelle Obama started her own "First Lady project" (i.e., the 'get moving' thing), she thanked Laura Bush for her help and advice.

That would certainly be a way for them to work together but Melania is a different kind of First Lady. She basically isn't doing anything that her predecessors did so I'm not sure how much involvement she needs from others when she isn't involved in these sort of things.

GOP lawmaker 'disgusted' by Trump for mocking House reps

GOP Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Tuesday he was "very disgusted" by President Donald Trump for mocking House Republicans who did not back him enough during their midterm election campaigns.

"A little more grace would have been a lot better, I was very disgusted when I heard that," Kinzinger said in an interview with CNN's John Berman on "New Day." "Let's go forward and look at how we're gonna do better in 2020."

As I've said I don't want the Mueller investigation shut down but here Turley gives one "unlikely" (quite) way it could be. Essentially the unconfirmed Mueller is now reporting to an unconfirmed Whitaker:

The Prestige: How Trump Could Pull Off The Ultimate Trick in Shutting Down The Mueller Investigation

In other words, by appointing Whitaker, Trump has undermined the position of his own Justice Department in court in the aforementioned Miller case without directly firing Mueller. If Whitaker is left in place, and Trump has said there is “no rush” to fill the post permanently, the court could conclude that Mueller is now exercising powers reserved to confirmed “principal officers.” He could be barred from exercising those powers until an attorney general is nominated and confirmed.

Making this situation all the more intriguing would be if Trump then appoints someone whom the Democrats would likely oppose, such as former New Jersey governor Chris Christie. Yet, if the Democrats rejected such a nominee, they themselves would be the reason for keeping the Mueller investigation enjoined, rather than any direct executive action taken by Trump. That would be the ultimate “prestige” to this trick.

All of this depends, of course, on the court’s interpretation of the appointments clause, which remains unresolved, as well as a delay in the confirmation of a permanent attorney general. Nevertheless, Whitaker’s appointment could have significantly strengthened the challenge to Mueller. Indeed, this sequence of events could magnify the concern of judges about allowing special counsels to hold unconfirmed positions. What may have been seen as mere conjecture about reporting to another unconfirmed official is now the reality at the Justice Department.

Whitaker could remove this threat to the position of his own department by simply recusing himself and leaving the supervision of Mueller to Rosenstein. Yet, given Trump’s long fury over the recusal by Sessions, that likely would not go over well. Or Whitaker could presumably wait for a decision and recuse himself if the court considers his unconfirmed status to be a barrier to the completion of the Mueller investigation.

Melania just seems more clueless than anything else. I'm not sure what we could ever expect out of a Slovenian fashion model who married into a filthy rich and terminally corrupt family without a single redeeming feature.

(And in a partial and indirect defense of Francesa's not knowing who Stan Lee was, I still sometimes have to think hard to remember which one is Melania and which one is Ivanka.)

Well Fat Donnie can't tell the difference between the Balkans and the Baltic States despite having serial wives from one or the other. And also being president of the United States, where some knowledge of international relations is assumed to be useful.

No wonder The Stupids love this guy so much. He's everything they want to be. Rich, stupid, and unaccountable.

some trainers in the Dominican because of them being anti-Hispanic is ludicrous

Have you been to the DR? Because that is one seriously racist country. I have been there 3 times, 2 vaca and 1 work outing, and without inviting conversation have locals talk about some other part of their population being POS mofos.

Here is one of the first articles that comes up when you google DR and racism Experiencing racism in DR

I don't know if this person's claims are true or not but don't dismiss the DR being racist thing. Because to me that is very credible.

No. I just wrote a very awkward sentence that you reasonably interpreted in a way different than I meant.

Her claim was that the Mariners fired some trainers in the DR because the Mariners dislike Hispanic people. My response is that since the new trainers that the Mariners hire will also be Hispanic, that reasoning makes no sense.

Kinda like how American democracy is so terrible; it's just the least terrible system of governance out there. For all the caterwauling about racism in America and how terrible we are as a country, it's a lot worse everywhere else.

I went on a 3-month work assignment to Finland in 1997, that country that is the subject of idyllic public education memes everywhere, and the printed materials my employer gave us advised that "dark-skinned individuals" (read into that whatever you will) should not go out drinking in bars alone for fear that the locals would start fights with them. In 1997. And we were going to a highly industrialized and highly educated city of 100,000+. Not the Finnish equivalent of the Dixie South.

Just out of curiosity, is there a non-Dixie South?

When you talk about racism in the Dominican Republic, isn't it the case that the racism is not anti-Hispanic, it is anti-Afro-Carribbean, and most specifically anti-Haitian?

70--I am no DR expert but each group thinks the other sucks royal ass. In casual UNINVITED conversation I gotta say the anti Haitian talk is really really nasty. If they talk this way to some white dude from the states WTF are they saying among themselves???

Don't know about that. Traveled all through SA, CA, Mexico and there are definite tension between different groups whose base language is kind of the same but each thinks poorly of the other. Like the Mexicans and El Salvadorans. Or that for years the Venezuelans treated Colombians like garbage if you believe the stories and now that Venezuela is a disaster Colombia is like #### you Venezuela?

Did you stick up for the Haitians?

75--The one time the guy was the taxi driver so I told him I wasn't interested in his opinions. Pretty sure that is why we got dropped like a half mile from our destination which obviously I did not figure out until he was long gone. The second time we were on a bus headed to an open beach and the guy goes off after seeing some Haitians walking alongside the road and I was one of several telling him to STFU. He told us Americans were ####### clueless but let it go. Don't know if that counts as sticking up for anyone.

Getting drunk and starting fights is pretty much the Finnish national pastime. Sometimes they do it on skates, but the basics are the same. Finns are a fun bunch; morose and sullen when sober, belligerent when drunk, which is often.

I'd say it goes from Coco Beach south around the coast to Tampa. Everything north of that, and most of the interior, is most definitely "the South", excepting Orlando.

It's no different with the English speakers. Americans think all Canadians have flapping heads and beady little eyes.

80--wasn't suggesting that US was 'better'. Just that there is plenty of 'hispanic on hispanic' tension out there and has been for a very long time.

Yeah - I'll note this doesn't have "Moose Factory in January" or "Hamilton when the wind isn't taking away the stench" or "Sudbury before they built all those smokestack skyscrapers".

Canada's tourism advantage. It's big enough that you can visit 10 different places and still not hit the armpits.

I'm closing the thread.

When I have a few minutes, I will write a dedicated post about the end of political threads in the main part of the site. Long story short, I'm tired of getting complaints about people making threats about stabbing people in necks and/or exposing personal information about other site members. I'm tired of the rancor. I don't believe it serves the site well. As you've witnessed, the time I have available to conduct site tasks is very short. I'm tired of expending time dealing with the political threads.

If you like, you will be free to discuss politics in a hidden forum section, set up like the Lounge section. If that doesn't suffice, you will be free to conduct your political discussion on another site.
