Los Angeles Angels Lose Fight for Angels.com Domain Name

The Angels of Dongyeon?...I believe that was on the third Bevis Frond album.

The Los Angeles Angels Major League Baseball team has lost its fight for Angels.com. The organization filed for a UDRP in February claiming rights to the trademark “Angels” and that the current registrant was using it in bad faith. The Angels filed for arbitration after the owner of the domain, Lee Dongyeon of South Korea, offered to sell it for $300,000 to an unidentified agent. Dongyeon purchased the domain for roughly $25,000 in 2005.

...By filing a UDRP, the Angels were trying to spend a few thousand dollars to get the domain rather than a few hundred thousand. By losing, they might end up paying a few million. Such is UDRP roulette.

How is it possible that Angels.com wasn't a pornography site?

There are sites on the internet that aren't pornography?

Depends on your definition of pornography.

Looks like ICANN stumbled into making the right decision in this case.

I'd like to own RLYW.com, but it's gonna cost me $1000. I hate these bastards.

Meh, it's a business. If you owned the trademark RLYW, you'd have a case under the cybersquatting law. You don't, you want a short little acronym that's easier to remember, so you gotta pay for it. Speculators have to hit big on the ones they hit on.

If it's going to be a business, it has to run both ways. Regular ol' speculators have got to be able to soak the corporations just as much as they can soak other regular people, or the corporations can soak regular people. Cybersquatting law sounds like nothing more than an internet version of imminent domain.

But hooray for whatever organization this is for making the unusual right decision. You can't copyright the word "angels." That didn't stop O.J. Simpson from copyrighting is initials, though. I wonder what's at oj.com. . . just as I thought; a speculator. O.J. should sue the pants off 'em.

Oh, I don't disagree.

Win some, lose some on these things to do with nomenclature, eh Angels?

You can't copyright the word "angels."
But you can own the trademark (*). (And, obviously, the Angels do. ) Copyright has nothing to do with anything.

And it's eminent domain, not imminent domain.

(*) Or, rather, a trademark. Trademarks are not necessarily exclusive. See Delta Airlines and Delta Faucets for an example.

The Roman Catholic Church totally dropped the ball on this one.

Big deal. Rangers.com doesn't go to either the New York Rangers or the Texas Rangers.

I was really hoping Rangers.com went to something Chuck Norris-related.

What about, "Oh my God, that domain is gonna hit us!!!"

Damn, I looked it up, but I guess I made my decision too fast.
