Lott: Numbers say Lawrie’s defence helping Jays win

Huge Lawrie…take it to the house!

Using that guideline, Brett Lawrie is responsible for a win all by himself, without even picking up a bat. Lawrie leads all third basemen with 12 runs saved. Last season, in just 43 games, his defence saved 14 runs, according to the DRS findings.

Evan Longoria of Tampa Bay led all third basemen last year with 22 runs saved.

“Lawrie’s on pace to destroy that. He’s on a fantastic pace,” said Ben Jedlovec, a BIS research analyst, whose recent article for ESPN.com focused on the Jays’ defence.

...While many fans regard Jose Bautista as an elite right-fielder, the DRS ratings say he is slightly below average. This year he has earned a -3. Last year he wore a -7.

“His range is actually pretty bad,” Jedlovec said. “It’s among the worst in baseball for right-fielders the last few years. But his arm and ability to throw out runners and prevent them from taking the extra base, that’s what saved him almost as many runs as he’s lost with his range.”

Lawrie does have an absolutely ridiculous first step, and a very strong arm. I've seen him bobble quite a few grounders and still nail the runner at first. He doesn't have the best hands, but his range is as good as anyone I've seen at third.

Lawrie's glove has been the most surprising thing about him. From what I had heard from his days in the Brewers organization I had thought he'd be a butcher in the field. Is it just that he was particularly ill-suited for 2B? What was the deal with that?

I wasn't expecting Lawrie top be a butcher in the field, but I've been very pleasantly surprised by how good he is. I don't remember the specifics of the criticisms of his play at second I just Keith Law saying a few times that he thought Lawrie would end up in left.

I just wish the guy would hit like a third baseman.

What's the error bar on that estimate this early?

You try fielding with 40's duct-taped to your hands and see how you do.

He has a 127 OPS+ in his 262 career AB. And he's 22.

Lawrie just made a killer play on a squeeze play.
