Lucia: MLB Network will be “embracing debate” next month

Just when you thought ESPN was the only network out there trotting out an endless array of debate shows, this trailer for a new MLB Network show popped up during the World Baseball Classic… and I’ve lost all faith in humanity.

Head to head, it’s “MLB Now” starring Brian Kenny vs. Honking Harold Reynolds. [trying the embed]

Prognosis?

This could be good… if anyone but Reynolds was put against Kenny on the show and the show didn’t lazily adopt a “new school vs old school” tagline. Kenny hosts a show called Clubhouse Confidential (which hopefully hasn’t been eliminated in favor of this), and is very good at facilitating discussions among more sabermetrically inclined guests. Him debating Reynolds will likely remind me of Keith Law running circles around Rob Parker last September on SportsCenter, with less hostility (from Parker) and snark (from Law).

A pointless debate roundtable? I wonder if they've already booked John McCain and Donna Brazile.

This is actually a pretty cool idea, though I don't think Reynolds is the ideal guy to pull of the stat skeptic side. Who would be? Bob Ryan?

This is the debating equivalent of LeBron James vs. Verne Troyer in a dunk contest.

Depends on how high the basket is. If it's only 1 foot high, Verne wins easily!

Now it depends on how high the players are. Verne wins again!

The Dodgers have been doing this on their local KCAL broadcasts since 2009. However they've got the white guy playing the ignorant ex player.

"Harold, you ignorant slut."

This will not be a fair fight. But worse, Harold will never change his mind in the least.

They should just give Joe Sheehan and Murray Chass a pair of dueling pistols and get it over with.

And broadcast it from Murray's mother's basement?
