In 130 years, the Giants had never won four straight games by shutout. But Bumgarner’s first career complete game—a one-hitter, at that—tacked nine more zeros onto San Francisco’s string of nothingness, now at 36 innings.
“Amazing, it really is,” said manager Bruce Bochy, whose team sits alone atop the N.L. West for the first time this season. “I’ve never seen it.”
Few have. The Giants became the 17th team to have four or more consecutive shutouts since 1918. The Baltimore Orioles did it most recently, with five straight in 1995.
...Bumgarner threw 107 pitches in nailing down his first complete game in 68 career starts, and the Giants never even got a reliever up in the bullpen. He walked two and struck out eight, and while he said he never seriously entertained thoughts about a no-hitter, going the distance was definitely on his mind.
“It’s nice to finally get a complete game,” he said. “I’ve had a couple of chances, but the 27th out was tough to get. There was a little luck on my side tonight, but I’ll take it.”
